I first saw Ronnie race at Cadwell Park, in 1969, in a F3 race, with the very first March, the one-off March 693 F3 'screamer'. Ronnie finished 3rd. in the 693, a hastily assembled car by the new March company; tube frame and using a lot of Brabham and Lotus pieces. By 1971 Ronnie had progressed to the extent that, driving the works March 711 F1 car, he finished 2nd in the World Drivers Championship. With a few more breaks that season he might easily have been crowned champion instead of the whinney-voiced Scot, Jackie Stewart. Always a delight to watch Ronnie 'backing the car into a corner', in a full opposite-lock slide, flat out in fifth gear. An absolute legend.
If F1 had cars with the engines of the late 80s/early 90s, the calendar of today and drivers with the balls of those of the 70s no teams would consistently be dominating the sport
Ronnie was the absolute master of car-control. Ronnie in highspeed-corners like "Woodcote" in Silverstone, without chicane befor the corner, showed this again and again. But Ronnie was also a pleasant person and a beloved husbend of his wife Barbro. She was not able to overcome the death of her beloved Ronnie. She endet her life with suicide. This all is so sad. R.I.P. Ronnie - we don´t forget you.
Peterson was an incredible driver. Sadly - at his funeral Gunnar Nillson that era's other Swedish driver - battling cancer - caught a chill and died shortly thereafter.
Rindt, Peterson and G. Villeneuve, so fast but also so spectacular. In 1978, it drove me mad to see the World title go to Andretti, Ronnie was way faster than him.
I have always preferred Ronnie but Andretti’s World Championship was not without merit. Ronnie Peterson was probably the fastest in the business in his heyday and a proven race winner. Mario Andretti was also a proven race winner but in the 1970s, he was probably also the best test and development driver in the world. Lotus needed him to make ground effect work. My biggest regret about this is that Ronnie died. The World Championship is not really that important. He gave us so many great memories. Too bad he drove to many rubbish cars.
Clark, Rindt, Cévert, Peterson, Villeneuve, Senna. Perhaps all of them would be around today if F1 had been safe back then as it is now. Senna's death was truly a freak accident, but the other five died because they drove extremely fragile cars in very dangerous circuits. Villeneuve being ejected from his car strapped to the seat was insane and surreal.
Important person for us "older" Swedes. Many of the young though probably do not know who he was. There was a R.P. museum but it had to close. We have a statue though located in the city of Orebro.
He was a great driver and racer. Good video as well, showing the late Colin Chapman with his customary 'throwing his cap in the air' when his team won a race. Thanks for the memory.
You were fast, you were brilliant, every one knew it was a matter of time that you would be lifting the championship trophies. Sheer luck betrayed you, but you will not be forgotten or brushed aside. Records book may not keep you between their lines, but all the racing fans will always keep you in their hearts as a true champion.
Fantastic !! Could not have put it better. Such lovely words - and just so true. We will never forget Ronnie 'Superswede - I prefere' Peterson. Not ever.... Forever & ever & ever & ever he will live in our hearts. Cheers and Bye For Now. Rx
The very first time I saw a Formula One car passing by in front of my eyes was in 1972, at the old, original 8 km long Interlagos circuit in Brazil, and it was Ronnie Peterson in the red March (with the weird Frisbee front wing) approaching the legendary Sargento hairpin, with its 14⁰ banking. As it turned out, Interlagos became one of Peterson's favourite tracks (it was Villeneuve's as well), and I saw him race there for the next five years. I place Peterson in two different categories; the first with Stirling Moss as the two drivers who, more than anyone, deserved to have been champion, but were not. The secont, amongst the ultra fast, all out drivers such as Jim Clark, Jochen Rindt, Gilles Villeneuve, and Ayrton Senna. Of course there are others, but Peterson was very special. The tragedy of his death, and his wife Barbro committing suicide nine years later is a gothic tale I wish had ended completely in another way. If cars and tracks had been safer, if people like Jackie Stewart had had more power to make all the changes he wanted, we would not have lost so many brilliant drivers, including Peterson, and the four from my list above.
I fondly remember RP. Nobody had a bad word to say about such a nice helpful man. He was known to assist even his rivals. He was a match for anybody, unfortunately his machinery often let him down!
I still remember Ronnie Peterson and I saw 1978 the race on tv I never forget that I was only 9 years when it happened. Extremely good formula one driver I still enjoy when I see Ronnie drive his Lotus then he was also a very humble and nice guy.
The man who could take a under powerd car and win racers. Ronnie my childhood Hero. Like Michele Alboreto said "He was my hero, that is why helmet is Blue and Yellow"
"I have two remedies for the turns and the spills: the steering wheel and the accelerator pedal" Ronnie Peterson (1944-1978) Swedish Formula 1 driver. Greetings from Venezuela.
As far as I can see, Jacques' helmet has every color you can name (blue, yellow, red, green, pink). "The other Jacques" (GIlles' brother) used a green and yellow helmet. I do not know ...
In the March 711 and the Tyrrell P34 you can really see Ronnie's Kart style driving, that made him a crowd favourite for those watching the races. But even in the Lotus he drove it far more on a slide than any of his teammates looked to do. I especially love the March at Montjuic Park (I think it is) and the Tyrrell pictures, both at a fast right into a short left hand turn, where he's full on sideways but still gets the car pefectly into the following left. Also, watching the pack racing bits, his car has a completely different attack angle to many of the other drivers.
Thanks for posting this tribute to Ronnie. If car control were the only factor determining a world champion, Ronnie would have been a multiple world champion.

This tribute is the best I've seen; the racing footage is not only picturesque with clear, unobstructed angles, with brilliant color, but the chronological order of his F1 rides starting with the March 701 is terrific. Well done with film of such clarity. I would've used Pink Floyd's 'Run Like Hell' though.
Peterson was not an obsessive egotist like Senna. He was friendly, modest and collegial. Nor was he a reckless driver like Villeneuve. Spectacular, yes. But dangerous, no.
@@benzflynn Thank you! I hate it when people compare Villeneuve and Peterson. Villeneuve was talented, reckless nut, who has been lionized in death. Ronnie was all grace.
R.I.P. Incredible....The very first time i see monza crash from a different view... quite clear Patrese sent the car on Hunt direction cause it was a very fast move
Road & Track had data of cornering speeds of the lead cars at Kylami. Petersen was the quickest in the corners. It took me by surprise at the time. F1 was very dangerous in those days & these cars were not easy to drive.

Tributes with music is the best homage to drivers like Ronnie Peterson, Jochen Rindt, Clay Regazzoni, Didier Pironi, Riccardo Paletti, Gilles Villeneuve, Jim Clark, Wolfgang von Trips, Elio de Angelis, Alberto Ascari, Peter Collins, Jo Siffert, Francois Cevert, Lorenzo Bandini, etc, etc, etc. Greetings from Venezuela.
As an Italian I can't permit these kind of words. It wasn't a rubbish hospital. Don't insult. He had 8 fractures on his right leg and 4 on his right foot. Moreover he was intoxicated by chlorine from the fire. Sad to say they made all the best but at that time it was very dangerous if you wanted to save his leg as he wanted. He asked to be ready for Watkins Glen. The same racist comments against Italy as for Italian driver Riccardo Patrese who was blamed and finally found innocent and not guilty for the crash.
Always smiling.
Never unsportsmanlike.
