Did you know there was once a Muslim sultanate in the heart of China?
Dive into the fascinating history of the Pingnan Guo Sultanate, led by Du Wenxiu, who rose from the ashes of conflict to establish a Muslim state in Yunnan during the tumultuous 19th century.
This documentary uncovers the story of a region transformed by its diverse cultures and the Mongol conquest, eventually becoming a battleground for ethnic and political dominance.
Learn about the unique circumstances that led to the formation of this sultanate, the strategic alliances and conflicts that defined its existence, and its tragic end. Witness the struggle between the Hui Muslims and Han Chinese, the influence of the Manchu rulers, and how these events intertwined with the larger Chinese resistance movements like the Taiping Rebellion.

Yunnan is home to more than 40 ethnic groups, most of whom live in harmony, except for the Hui, who do not seem to get along well with any non-Muslim group. They were behind the Kunming train station terrorist attack in 2014, and in recent years more and more people have begun to wear black burqas and recently fought the government's efforts to renovate mosques. In the minds of many Muslims, Muslims abroad are brothers and sisters, while non-Muslims at home are enemies, and there is only religion but no country in their hearts(“有教无国”说的很贴切).

There were a few Chinese Muslims accompanied him during his voyage. Their names are listed in the museum. Zheng He is revered in Melaka as he helped Melaka founder Parameshwara to build relationship with ming emperor Ju Di. Parsmeshwara later became Muslim and his son (or grandson) Mansoor Shah married one of the Ming princes.

Du Wenxiu himself was born into Han ethnicity. Du converts to Islam in his early age mainly as he finds the Manchu Qing rulers were exploiting both Huis and Han mine workers. Du’s main objective was to unite both Han and Hui to overthrow Qing rule. Du was somewhat successful in bringing some non-Muslim ethnic tribes of Yunnan but he wasn’t successful in building the unity between Huis and Hans. Moreover some Hui factions supported the Qing emperor. This was called Panthey rebellion. Thousands of huis were massacred in this rebellion. Many others were dislocated as refugees into Qinghai province and also into Myanmar. Their descendants in Myanmar are still called as Pantheys

Genetically Hui Muslim and Han Chinese are genetically indistinguishable. At first they are thought to be descendants of Middle eastern merchants, travelers and adventurers that settled down in China and married local women. Genetic tests have shown that they are descended primarily from East Asian converts to Islam and only a small percentage has Middle Eastern genetic markers. Culturally and linguistically, Hui Muslims are Han Chinese that practice Islam as their religion. Furthermore Du Wenxiu was Hui Muslim by birth instead of a convert.

You will only see Burma. The Muslims in Yunnan and Northwest China are descendants of the Arab, European, and Persian troops brought by the Mongols. After the Mongols fled, the Ming government allowed them to stay in China, but they could only marry Han Chinese. These people were collectively called "Hui" (which included Christians, Jews, and Muslims). These people later became Muslims. Hundreds of years later, they launched a holy war in 1862, massacring pagans in Yunnan and Northwest China, killing 20 million Buddhists, and they wanted to establish an Islamic state without pagans. Ten years later, the government army returned after destroying the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, and they (more than 90%) were destroyed by the government army. The Chinese Muslims you see today are descendants of some people who were forgiven by the government army at that time. In addition, Zheng He was a Buddhist, and his hand-copied Buddhist scriptures were sold at a very high price at Sotheby's auction house a few years ago. It is true that some "Semu people" (Europeans, Persians) became officers of the Ming Dynasty, but they included Jews, Christians, and Muslims. The Jews were called blue-hatted "Hui", but later they all became Muslims. They have no descendants because they all died in the holy war. Islam brings only blood.

As a Chinese, it must be said that you basically bullshit the whole time. There have been many massacres in China's history, even genocides. Regardless of the cause, in the eyes of the Chinese people today, most of the time, the victims will be more or less sympathized. The Hui rebellion, which originated in Yunnan, is perhaps the bloodiest ethnic vendetta in the history of the world. After this rebellion, more than 90% of the Hui people in the rebel areas were slaughtered. But there is almost no sympathy among Chinese today (except Muslims), and I will explain why.
Dali itself is a multi-ethnic regime that writes Chinese characters and speaks Chinese. Some historians even speculate that its founders were the Han intellectuals who went south to YunNan. Before the arrival of the Mongols, there were many Han people living in Yunnan. With the fall of the Mongols and the establishment of the Ming Dynasty, a large number of Han Chinese once again poured into Yunnan, and the Muslim population of Yunnan also increased in the following centuries, and by the 19th century, the Muslim population of Yunnan had grown from almost negligible to about 1.3 million, about one-tenth of the total population of Yunnan. With the growth of the population, the conflicts between Muslims and other ethnic groups due to the conflict of beliefs and the competition for resources became more and more intense, until the 19th century, with the outbreak of the Taiping Rebellion, the Muslims in Yunnan had greater ambitions.
The Muslim rebellion was sparked by a battle over a mine in the Lin 'an area, led by Du Wenxiu, with the slogan "Unite the Hui and Han as one body, erect a righteous flag, expel Manchus, restore China, cut off corruption, and create a Muslim state in Yunnan". Du Wenxiu himself did not hate the Han people, and even the identity of many Muslims at that time was "Han people who believed in Islam." However, once the national uprising was launched, it was difficult to control, and many non-Muslims were slaughtered indiscriminately in the rebellion, which broke out for many years. The rebellion soon spread to neighboring Guangxi and Guizhou, but the Hui uprising could not win recognition in the Han majority areas, and the uprising was soon put out, and Du Wenxiu himself committed suicide by swallowing poison. But no one could have foreseen that this would turn out to be just the beginning of a bloodier and more far-reaching rebellion.
After the failure of the Yunnan uprising, a Hui leader named Ren Wu fled to Shaanxi Province, which also had strong Sino-Hui rivalries, and continued to foment rebellion in an attempt to re-establish the Islamic State. (By the way, Shaanxi is one of the origins of Chinese culture and has a very high cultural status.) Subsequently, with the "cutting bamboo on the Holy Mountain" incident as the trigger, a new Muslim rebellion broke out in Shaanxi, and a large number of Han people were slaughtered indiscriminately. At the beginning of the rebellion, the Qing government tried to appease the rebels, but the rebels killed and dismembered the ministers sent by the Qing government to negotiate, which led to the Qing government's decision to suppress by force. The rebellion then spread to what is now Gansu, Qinghai, Inner Mongolia, and even Outer Mongolia, and was far bloodier than Yunnan, slaughting cities wherever they crossed the border. The rebellion lasted for five years and was difficult for the Qing army to neutralize, as the rebels received large amounts of Russian firearms. By the end of the rebellion, the entire Upper Shaanxi and Gansu region (including Qinghai) had lost more than 20 million people, most of them Han Chinese. The rebellion lasted for five years, and it was difficult for the Qing army to put down the rebellion, because the rebels received large amounts of Russian firearms. After the failure of the rebellion, some of the rebels, led by Bai Yanhu, fled to Xinjiang to cooperate with foreign forces, and the Agubah continued to fight until they were expelled to Central Asia, whose descendants are the "Donggan people" who now live in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, and are said to have had a difficult time getting along with the local Central Asian indigenous people, even though they are Muslims.
Instead of fighting against the oppression of the Qing government to create an Islamic state composed of pure Muslims, the rebels again carried out indiscriminate killings of non-Muslims in the process, and eventually triggered bloody reprisals by the Han Chinese, resulting in the massacre of more than 90% of the Muslims in Shaanxi and Gansu and the forced relocation of the rest to remote and poor areas.
For the political purposes of "national unity", the content of this chaos was not written into textbooks, and most Chinese people today do not know about it, Almost anyone in China who knows about this history have no sympathy for them (except some Muslims).

@@wewenang5167 When these things happened, the Manchu government had not yet collapsed, and the CPC would not be established until more than half a century later. For the sake of so-called "national unity," the Communist Party erased this black history of the Hui people. What the fxxk are you talking about?
