Really saved my butt here. Going to look at a four door 4wd 2003 tacoma. It has rust and holes starting to form. Its not as bad as this but im really glad to know i found a company that makes the frame repair metal work that i need!
I just did mine but I didn't buy any of these "band aids" (each section is 150/200/300$ from them), I chopped out the rust and replaced it with .125 metal I bought from my local steel supplier. These frames are 5 1/2"s tall and 2 3/4"s wide, I ordered that and some random sizes. Took me a few weeks on and off but I did it for roughly 700$. No offense to this channel, this dude can weld and does great work!! I just think it's silly to go over junk metal with good metal, rather than to chop and replace it.
Big fan of your videos man! I recently started refinishing the frame on my 91 nissan hardbody. I've been pretty paranoid about the heavy scale and thinning metal, but your videos have given me some perspective on what real rot looks like.
Going to install my SafTcaps right now on my 2001 double cab , my 1984 Toy frame rotted out at 10 years I welded in 1/4 metal. My 2001 took 19 years to rot... you think Toyota would get their S..T together!
I have a 2005 Toyota Tacoma that has a rusted frame. Does Safety Cap make parts for this year of truck? What is the cost of the repair that you made in the Tacoma video? Thanks, Matt
I have an '01 that had safety cap's welded to the frame. You should expect to spend anywhere from $1500 - $3000 depending on labor rate in your area. It's approximately 10-20 hours of work. I'm giving you wide ranges, but hopefully it ballparks it for you.
This Safe-T-Cap stuff is not cheap and it's a bandaid. I'd far rather cut out the bad metal and replace it than to cover it and hope for the best. Each piece they sell is 150-300$, and it takes6 to 10 pieces per frame.
I know this seems like a weird comment, but I have a tig welder. What voltage and speed would you recommend on this frame project. I’m doing the same thing on the 2003 Tacoma I just bought. Same frame part too. I always struggled find that stuff out. Thanks man!
Hello. Great work. Have you ever installed safety cabs on the front part of the frame of a 2008 Tacoma? I’m a proud Tacoma owner. Somehow I missed the recall.I just recently found out about safety caps and I’m definitely going to make the investment. I am not certified but I am a pretty good welder and I’ve access to a fantastic shop. I’m excited about doing the repair definitely would accept any advice you would like to give.
OUTSTANDING! I just saw a program entitled "Wheeler Dealers" where they had a clown shoe BMW with a bad rear end despite the high horsepower of the car and rear-wheel drive. The mechanic in that show fabricated a whole new frames system for the rear end to hang on to. Yours is the first for me to see an actual rail frame repair. I got to your video by seeing the partial frames on the browser window. I got to the browser window after a guy in the Chicago Craigslist is selling of what looks to be pristine 2000 Tacoma but he says "broke frame rust" in his ad. I'll just interpret that as needing a flatbed tow truck to move it. QUESTION: What is the cost of the operation you performed in this video? The dropping the gas tank through the cutting out the cancer to the cleaning things up to the setting up the frame rails to the welding them in to the given them the nice shiny black paint to put everything back together again? I believe what you will tell me is still more competitive than getting an entirely new frame. I am surprised the rear axle didn't crash through his bed as a 4-door 70 Chevy did to a friend of mine while I was in the Army as he was driving out of the parking lot Colin the rear tires & Axle just came through his trunk as the body claps from Michigan rust.
$7k is waaay too high for this job. That sounds like a "go away" price. The previous owner of the '04 Tacoma I just bought said he was quoted somewhere under $2k (I can't remember the exact number - not sure if that included cost of materials or not), which sounds about right for the time that was mentioned in other comments.
I like how most of the parts where your on camera with the truck in the background you stand right between the cab and bed so we don't see how bad it sagged when you welded it.
Anyone know how much a shop should reasonably charge for job like this? I would be happy if I could just buy the Safe T cap kits and have someone cut and weld in.
How are the safety-caps holding up? I"m looking at doing this to my 01' runner and this is the first video I've seen someone weld them in (albeit, I haven't specifically looked up videos for it yet).
I hear people say the caps themselves are stronger than OEM frame is fully welded. To prevent them rusting again make sure to paint+coat the inside and outside
The problem with POR-15 is that if it is not applied 100% correctly, it only serves to hold in moisture. On an already rusted frame, you would need to remove everything, sandblast it, acid etch, and apply the paint for it to be proper and work.
How much time did it take? I don't live near you and I would like to get an idea what amount of time I would be charged if I had something done locally. Great video as always.
