Push(run alongside)start the best on flat ground, using second gear, backed up against compression, clutch-in and run fast as you can, bounce on saddle, dropping clutch at same time, bang bang bang, jump on again and away.
Very nicely explained, Poppy Raw, I love this bike....we had a 1943 M20 500cc for 40-good years on it !! Here is my bit on starting issues....Excess compression attimes leads to petrol being sucked into the combustion-chamber without any firing taking place, and that means the spark-plug has got unburnt petrol on it....better to wait a minute or so in this case and then start in first-kick without trying to create compression again. Hope I have been able to convey the point. I have used this bike a lot.
You didn't mention that you need to make sure you give a full stroke on the kickstarter - making sure you go past the end of the quadrant, so even if the engine backfires, you don't cop it.
Trying to explain something you've been just doing naturally and intuitively for years is often difficult, since you've long ago stopped consciously thinking about how you do it.
I used to be scared of my M20 it would put me through the roof if you got the compression wrong I wish I had it now bought for 20 pound in 1967 swapped for a BSA Bantam and 20 pounds ayear later
The learner hav'to be on view on whet you try to teach them, not on the other side where they don't see what you say.My daughter learned how to start my GSXR and the throttle at the age of 4,now she's 6 and she rides a 40cc custom bike

total chaos when more than one person try to explain and the explanations themselves are more confusing than anything else. That's what I meant too.Kind regards Tabourba.

How to get the beautiful bike for my self.. I love it very much
Its a side valve , its easy !
The real way would be to straddle bike and take the bike off the stand. My Super rocket started this way first or second kick.
