  • I just got the four wheel drive working on my 1988 s10, all that i did was replace all the vacuum lines and replace the 4x4 switch on the side of the transfer case and everything started working perfectly, very easy fix indeed!

    one thing you forgot to mention as I've owned 3 of these s-10's. the 4x4 ball switch on transfer case leaks fluid into vacuum line and vacuum sucked it up into actuator and ruins the rubber diaphragm that pulls on the cable. Had this happen 3 times.

      40belowful mine didn’t have that problem, I didn’t realize they did that. I just never had that experience with it. Good to know though.

    Sweet vid man. I didn’t even know the damn picture was supposed to light up! Mine shifts realllllllly hard into any 4wd. Really hard to get into 4L but when I do I have to stommmmp on the brakes fml. Might have been to the brake hose leak I had, just fixed it last night and haven’t tried 4wd yet. But I’m pretty sure I need a new diaphragm and the ball valve to say the least. I’m planning on doing all (most) of the vac lines tom hopefully.

    Okay so I have a problem. At 1:07 you see a rod going across connected to something. I need to know what that rod is called because I searched everywhere and found nothing. I think it engages the 4x4 or something. Thanks.

      Thats the transfer case shift linkage. It shifts the 2 speed transfer case between high, neutral & low gear and also actuates the spring-loaded ball vacuum switch (discussed & shown) that locks the front axles into 4wd .

    Question: I've located the horn relay on my '87 Chevrolet S-10. How does the relay come out? It's next to the brake release, near the steering column a white square relay.I'm pulling on it but, isn't moving. What am I NOT doing to get it off?

    • @7erDave
      @7erDave  Год назад +1

      Is it just stuck? relays are not meant to come out all that loosely. I sometimes need to pull them out with a pair of channel locks. Does that relay rock back and forth on the pins at all? If so you can walk it out of its socket by continually pulling and rocking it back and forth usually.

    • @datnotme9921

      @@7erDave thanks for the info. It did, that I remember. It rock back and forth. Yea probably with a pair of channel locks. 👍 the relay clicks when I push horn button.

    2 questions my 4x4 light goes off after disengaging but the front wheel light stays lite up i already changed the vacuum valve and installed all new vac lines so when I disengage 4x4 i have to unhook the vac on the intake and the light goes off and whats the button thing on the floor shifter for? Anyway good vid thanks..

      @40belowful 7 лет назад +1

      the button on transfer case is for going to high to low range. but only do this when you at a stop.

    • @7erDave
      @7erDave  5 лет назад

      S10_4_Life I would guess it’s because it’s either not engaging or it won’t disengage, probably because of a sticking check valve that’s on the transfer case which has vacuum going to it. That’s my guess.

      1. You may have a vacuum leak. The vacuum lines rot over time. They will also collapse when old, rotten & soft and prevent vacuum from actuating switch, sort of like an electrical short.
      2. The line under the hood by battery that connects to the vacuum diaphram switch that operates the front axle engagement cable is easily accidentally disconnected when replacing battery.
      3. Defective ball valve shown in video.
      4. A stick, while plowing through brush, has ripped the lines off the ball valve switch.
      I've had all 4 occur since 1986.
      Less likely:
      5. Your transfer case is shot. But It's tougher than the transmission.
      6. Front axle gears are shot. Meh...
      7. Cable actuator is shot.

    something is still wrong.....picture light should be off...disengaged.....and on....engaged.....did not seem to be fully engaged in this video....thats why you had trouble with the shifter......semi fixed......good luck...

    • @7erDave
      @7erDave  8 лет назад

      its working properly, the only thing is that the body has a 3 inch lift on it and because of that the shifter has trouble coming through the floor. and when i shft it the lever keeps hitting the plastic housing. but as far as its operation the 4x4 does work fine. If you can get the left pushed up far enough.
      And as far as the light is concerned I'm not acutely sure. But all that i know is it shifted fine between 2 and 4 wheel drive. But if you watch the end of the video all the lights turn off when i put it back into 2wd this time. so it completely fixed. It just takes a while because of the vacuum system, its pretty sluggish.

      that's good....I have an 88 s-15 and the whole shebang is not working ....have replaced just about everything and it did kinda work but is on the blink again....had to also replace that bulb in the shifter display....any ideas ???

    • @7erDave
      @7erDave  8 лет назад

      maybe you have a vacuum leak in the lines or the valve or diaphragm sticks. I had to replace at least 20 feet of vacuum lines to and from everything. I also had to replace the little vacuum switch on the side of the transfer case because when i got to that point the little check ball was stuck which wouldn't allow it to moved out of 2wd. by the time i was don't i think every vacuum line had been replaced on the truck.

      Rick Den my '03 had this as well. One goes to actuator, one to engine vacuum, and one to atmosphere. I had to replace all of mine. Pretty sure same on the older ones as on my 2003.

    what size wrench did you use to take off the ball N spring valve

    • @7erDave
      @7erDave  7 лет назад

      Joshua Spett I'm not sure but I know that I didn't have a wrench larger than 7/8 at the time. It was a fairly larger valve so I'd say it would've been something between a 3/4 to a 7/8. But then again I can't quite remember. If you go to a parts store and ask to see one of the new valves you can also test fit wrenches on it while you are there.

    • @jesp999
      @jesp999 7 лет назад +1

      thanks, I'm just going to grab a few valves from the junk yard and clean them and find a good one. I think someone else in a video working on a 2nd generation s10 used a 7/8th so I think they kept the same valve into the next gen. I have a 88 like yours. best truck ever.
