A Better Foam Beetle?! CDC Beetle Fly Tying Tutorial

  • When those brown trout are sipping beetles away underneath the trees on rivers, or sipping terrestrial beetles from the surface of lakes, an exact imitation is crucial!
    Usually, this is where a foam beetle comes in to play. But foam beetles land a little heavy, float poorly and are definitely not fun flies to fish in smaller sizes.
    This is when you should try the CDC beetle. With all the same goodness of the foam version, but with better float-ability.

    Hook: ‪@FullingMillTV‬ Ultimate Dry Barbless, sz 16
    Thread: ‪@SemperfliNet‬ Nanosilk in Black, 12/0
    Body: ‪@SemperfliNet‬ Gel Core Body Micro Fritz, Black
    Thorax: Shimmer Dub, Peacock Green
    Back: ‪@FullingMillTV‬ CDC, Black

    I watched you tying this beatle at Mallon & Green on the 9th March also thanks for sharing the video, hopefully I will have some success using it in the new season.

      It’s certainly proved to be a useful pattern to me that had all but replaced the foam beetle in my boxes..
      A sighter could easily be added to aid visibility too, but I prefer it without
