This is how I was taught to bake it when I was a little girl. People are so in a rush. Old time people would knead sweetbread by hand. Thank you so much for sharing. Sweet memories 🙂
Bajan living in Barbados and i usually mix by hand as well no machine can give you the texture you want. I usually start wet melting my butter and shortening and adding my water and essence and spices before the flour and baking powder.
I just came across your channel, I am going to try your recipe. I usually melt the fat and when it cool down I make a well and pour it in the middle. Also the fruit I add flour and baking powder to the fruit to stop fruit from sinking, thumbs up God blessed your family, happy holidays
Looks good. I'll give it a go. My late mother ran a cafe in Barbados. Here in England she would make a kitchen table top of mixture for about 15 cake tins for family and friends at Christmas and Easter. In the early days she would use Irish salted butter. A bakery l visited in Holetown produced some bread as good as she did which is great compliment.
Does anyone flour their cherries and raisins before adding? Mum taught me to do this as it aids in the fruit being disperse throughout the bread and not sinking to the bottom. I also rehydrate my raisins as I like them plump.
Yea my mum and gran did this but only when baking cakes. Sweetbread is much more dense and the raisins are unlikely to sink. None of my raisins sink and they are nice and juicy still. Could possibly be the method used if they do? I personally find some ingredients are different here in the UK so it may also depend on that as well 🤷🏾♀️
Yes girl, too many people are now baking the sweet bread using the hand mixer and then the bread crumbles or soft almost like cake, I hate that. This is the correct texture here
🤣cake stand. we would say bread tin in de ole days, use to put our cakes and bread in ole eclipse biscuit tin or a bucket with a lid, your sweetbread looks yummy.
Yes it was, but that’s optional you don’t need to use milk if you don’t want to (or have an intolerance) you can use another alternative or use only the water.
@@bajanfamilyabroad many thanks for the reply, I used both evaporated milk and coconut milk but otherwise exactly followed your recipe and it turned out great! Thank you
Hi Christine, thanks for watching ♥️ I think your phone autocorrected what you typed. If you mean the cherries I put those on at the end just before I put the sweetbread in the oven. I just cut them in half and pop them to the top, if you mean the raisins, during the baking process the raisins rise to the top. Hope that’s what you mean
Hi there I would prefer fresh coconut instead of dessicated coconut not the same results when using dessicated coconut real bajans use fresh coconut. Just making a point . I never see my bajan friends and family using dessicated coconut.🇬🇧
Hi - Thanks for your comment. I can only use what’s available locally to me here in the UK. Fresh coconut is always the best option but even with the desiccated coconut it still tastes authentic. As the older ppl would say “When yuh ain’t got horse, ride cow”.
Hiya, check out the description box. I’ve included all the quantities there as well as the instructions, the only thing I don’t have measurements for is the water/milk and the cherries/raisins, since I estimate that based on the texture and on how many raisins I want in the sweetbread. Hope that helps.
Given you sound very experienced in this area you can appreciate each oven is different so it’s dependent on the type of oven you have but take your point
I don't know where you got those mixtures from but old people never add milk eggs or Coconut water just ordinary water Please you are almost right except for the Coconut water please
This one came out perfect for me not sure if you’re based in Barbados? I do find the quality of some of the ingredients are different and may vary. Where are you based?
#awesome finally a proper bajan sweet bread on you tube. Just how my mom made it. Thanks for sharing. Blessings 👍

That's the way I do my sweet bread with out eggs and it's very nice your bread looks very nice good job
Testing should be done before it comes out of the oven, this way it maintains the heat before it,s remove
I did this off camera but thank you for your feedback

hi, what did you put in after you put in the coconut water? was it evaporated milk?
Yes it was, but that’s optional you don’t need to use milk if you don’t want to (or have an intolerance) you can use another alternative or use only the water.
@@bajanfamilyabroad many thanks for the reply, I used both evaporated milk and coconut milk but otherwise exactly followed your recipe and it turned out great! Thank you
Hi fam happy you didn't add egg good job💎💎
The real, old-time recipe does not use eggs or milk in the Bajan Sweet Bread /Coconut Bread. However, more modern recipes add milk and eggs. 💕
Looks good. What are the measurements of the ingredients.
Thank you ☺️. All the measurements can be found in the description box
What are the ingredients measurements please. Want to try this. Love me some sweet bread just never made it before.
I’ve put all the details in the description box for you guys xx
We never heard of self rising flour, regular flour plus baking powder, how much BP.
Hi we call them glazed cherries here in Barbados 🇧🇧
Hi, enjoyed your video, how did you get the browsers on the bread

Is it 2 pounds of flour and 1lb sugar or cups? I want to try it but will need d correct measurements. Thanks
Hi Pat, it’s 1lb of Sugar, the measurements in the description are correct
How much flour, sugar ,etc?
Details are in the description box
Where is the sugar water to brush the top
I actually didn’t do this but will try this next time. Thanks for the feedback
You didn't include the measurement of the ingredients. The bread looks lovely 👍🏾
In the description

As one who was the grater at home I know what you mean, nevertheless, this might be a good way for people to learn before using the 'real' thing.
You didn't give the measurements for the ingredients

I bake bread at 300 degrees which does not allow the bread to be too brown and crusty because of the fruits
Given you sound very experienced in this area you can appreciate each oven is different so it’s dependent on the type of oven you have but take your point
Looks like there is a lot of shortening in the product
It actually came out perfect but feel free to put less in yours
English scones are very similar just hand size.
Hi
Too much sugar because you add lots of cherries and raisins
You can always make it to your liking. I enjoyed mine
I don't know where you got those mixtures from but old people never add milk eggs or Coconut water just ordinary water Please you are almost right except for the Coconut water please
I have not added any eggs into my sweet bread. I like adding coconut water to MY Sweetbread you can always make yours to your liking.
You gave us the ingredients but no measurements.
If we are making bread for the first time we definitely require all the measurements. Thank you.
Lol sand
U were going good till you put in raisins
😂😂😂😂😂 I love raisins but you can always do it without xx
Too much butter
