  • HI! So this video took waaay longer to edit than I expected, which explains the late upload this week, but I hope you guys like it and that it's not too long and boring, hahaha.
    This is definitely not gospel, I probably did some steps out of place and switched things up, but hopefully it's helpful!
    I love you all!

    Holy cow! Boning and draping? You're my hero. I need to get this brave in my sewing. And I thought I was doing good to make adjustments to patterns instead of sticking to them strictly like my mom. :) Beautiful cosplay.

    You are a seamstress because you do a better job than I could ever do and I love to sew! I have to use patterns. I have, however , bought two of the same skirt in the past (on clearance of course) and made them into one skirt. It's hard to do when the material is patterned or multicolored. I have also made curtians out of sheet sets as well.

    So cute! You make a beautiful Belle! Hint: when sewing the rectangles together to make the bow, clip the corners on the diagonal before you turn it inside out. You'll have lovely crisp corners. Pick them out with a pin for a super-sharp finish.

  • @MrsYasha1984

    This is really awesome :) the second dress you've ever sewn from scratch and you already do draping and boning. Just fearless, I love it! I still see quite some possible improvement fitwise (some puckering in the center front and some diagonal wrinkles under the sideboobs where you probably should deepen the bust darts more and add what measurement is missing to the side seam. Back darts are very helpful too, if you want the back to sit nice and smooth. But damn, you got so much right! Back length seems perfect, as well as bust and waist circumference. Very nice shape of armhole and neckline too.I have been draping for myself and doing my own patterns for years now, always trying to perfecting the fit over the years. So please understand if I am a bit of a nimcompoop, I only try to help out a fellow experimental sewer :) This turned out really great, colour me impressed! You are a lovely belle!

    • @rachelmaksy
      @rachelmaksy  7 лет назад +1

      Manuela Glavas Thank you so much love!!! Oh totally, there are a lot of areas that kinda came out wonky, hahahaha. I feel like they'll look good pinned then once I go to sew it the dress is like NAAAH. 😂 Thank you for the recommendations! I kinda just eyed the darts so I think more calculated ones would definitely help lol

    • @MrsYasha1984
      @MrsYasha1984 7 лет назад

      actually, "eyeing" the darts gets mostly better results than calculating them :) I have tried to alter bought patterns to fit me (DESASTER!), I have tried to calculate personalized patterns according to books, and I have tried draping. Draping really gave me the best results. But it is a bit of an experience matter, so jumping in like you did is really the perfect way to go, I learned so much about how fabric behaves from draping alone. Now I do almost all of my vintage inspired wardrobe based on my draped basic pattern.
      If you like sewing it can be a huge advantage to get someone to pin a draped pattern on some cheap" try out-fabric" directly to your body (I used my husband and a girlfriend of mine), and make up a nice cardboard pattern out of this, to be used for project after project. It is a lot of work, but can give absolutely great results, so it is worth it if you want to sew on a regular basis.

    • @rachelmaksy
      @rachelmaksy  7 лет назад

      Oh yay! So I didn't do it completely wrong! Hahaha. That's so true, I feel like I'm learning so much about what looks good and what doesn't work with fabric by just jumping into it. I'm still struggling a bit with sewing straight lines to be honest, but I'm a very hasty person so it is probably just cuz I rush it a bit. I'm excited to make more things and try to get better!

    • @MrsYasha1984
      @MrsYasha1984 7 лет назад

      Oh you got a lot right! Like I said, you really impressed me :) And what's still a bit wonky or not so perfect, will get better with experience. But we all have to start somewhere and you can be proud of yourself and this beautiful cosplay!

    I can't handle how beautiful you are, just the shape of your face is absolute perfection! This makeup and costume is so flattering on you. Every time you do cosplay my favorite part is you doing silly things in costume, I just can't help it, it cracks me up, I'm a 4 year old at heart. I would say it's like 99,99999999 % perfect, the only tiny little thing I would tweak is that area near hairline, doing some makeup magic with shading, looking like hair (something like you did for female to male transformation with makeup mustache) ?

    Gorgeous as always! And I continue to be amazed at your I don't know what the hell I'm doing but it turns out really well sewing and draping skills 🙏. I mean, seriously! You got mad talent in that area. I got to ask though....why do you gather by hand?? It's so much faster and more evenly done by machine. Also, I've heard from larger chested girls, that they pad their mannequin in the chest area (or even put a bra on it) to achieve a better fit. Not a problem I have personal experience with, though ☺

    • @rachelmaksy
      @rachelmaksy  7 лет назад +2

      Rara Avis Hahaha good question, I've never done it by machine! I only learned to do it by hand by watching others do it 😬 I'm gonna have to teach myself that way of doing it hahahaha. And I do have a bra and padding on my mannequin 😊 Otherwise there's no way I'd get the measurements even close to what I need haha

    • @MrsYasha1984
      @MrsYasha1984 7 лет назад

      you can control much more fabric if you do the gathering by hand. because you can do longer stitches :)

    • @raraavis7782
      @raraavis7782 7 лет назад +1

      The Pinup Companion Oh, haha, indeed, you have a bra on the form....I totally didn't notice 😶
      As for machine gathering, you just need to loosen the bobbin tension somewhat. To about a 3 if your dial is 1-7 like mine (my normal setting would be a 4,5). You mark the front and sideseams on the piece of fabric to make distributing the fabric evenly easier afterwards and sew with a straightstich. Then you take the fabric and tug on the upper thread and it will gather the fabric nicely. The stitchlength depends on the thickness of the fabric and how "fine" the gathers need to be. If I want to ease the shoulder part of a shirtsleeve, for example, I would set it to a 2, for a skirt more likely to a 3 or 4, or even wider for a heavy woolfabric or something, since the gathers should be "looser" and more pronounced. Of course if you enjoy doing it by hand, go for it (I rather enjoy handsewing myself, it's very relaxing), but it will turn out more evenly when done by machine and of course it saves a lot of time.
