0:20 Let me correct: Even this gun can't compensate for the "oustanding" troll armor of this heavy tank named T26E4 that is being called a medium tank.
After 31 years working with tanks at a proving ground, I applaud this video. Somewhat simplified from the real calculations but great for a video game. As for what happens after penetration - I'll skip that since I've seen too much.
The shell doesn't need to go through the main armor for it to be a critical hit, a critical hit only happens when you damage a module. Tracks, Gun, View ports, ext all count as modules.

You guys need to make a “How It Works: Ramming Mechanics” video. Because I’ve been playing for years and some collisions still leave me scratching my head.
No these have been the standard mechanics for years. They're hopefully going to be reworking it so there effectively won't be a 2 caliber, and 3 caliber rule.
great way to explain penetrating, but i just shot an 87mm caliber HE at the middle of an super hellcat's side armor and i only got splash damage. 37mm against 87mm? great game.
hat off to WG for making this video! very informational. Though I studied a bit on the pen/shells, the break down this video offers is eye opening! 12k battles... and STILL learning...
after doing the math it made sense, considering i haven't learned COSINE yet i needed the assitance of a calculater. Of course I had it on RAD and just couldn't get it until i realized that i needed to be on DEG. Never knew about the 2 caliber rule lol. been playing since 2013.
Omniscient Sherman I was just thinking of the pen. of an HESH shell: Lets say in Real Life: we have a HESH shell which can pen. 120mm, this gets fired at an IS-3 which at the front has 110mm (effectivly about 200mm) of armour (we're not hitting the track). So because HESH acts like a Plstic Explosive it forms it's filler to the shape of the armour and than pens. So basicly angling (as long as it's not a too steep angle) doesn't matter. This HESH shell penetrates anything that has an armour value below 120.1 mm Is this machanic in WoT?
Why don't we try it out? Send me a friend invite in-game and we can do some experimenting. (My in game name is same as my RUclips account). What is your in-game name?
Omniscient Sherman I haven't played the game for 2 years now, I'm just the guy who likes watching WoT videos, the game just didn't fit my style, but I enjoy watching the ones who are better than me... Sorry Bro for not beeing able to test that
In WoT, HESH works just like HE, only with more penetration. Which is stupid because this is totally not what HESH does, but that's WoT. Dumbing down everything so kids can understand.
Great video WG, liked the detailed explanations and funny setups (*MS-1* killing tier 10s). Will there be any changes in these mechanics or not? I would like to see APCR damage reduced compared to AP so we would have truly unique ammos atm APCR is just better AP.
Are you sure the formula at 10:13 is right? It should be C > 3 x h not C >= 3 x h, otherwise the poor 120mm guns would go through 40 mm armor which they don't
Anvilshock armour penetration: the math that nobody understands enough to also understand why they don't pen shit. Learn geometry and try saying that again.
Yeah, they should talk about Camo Rating, i was watching a video about the SU-122-44 by Quickybaby, and i had no clue what he meant by "The SU-122-44 has a great Camo Rating"
cool vid! i already know the game mechanics inside and out but it's still cool watching these kinds of vids. now lemme see what happens to the shells when they penetrate hehe
Good video. Wish Warships get same type of video. Especially since we have to deal with more things, like fuse length, overpenetration, penetration loss due to spaced armor (which apparently doesn't follow what Tanks formula had), and things like internal armor...
In the game you don't consider the fact when a shell hits the armor with not its point but in the side. Even if the caliber is 3+ times bigger than the armor, the pressure point is the side which is wider and as a result of physics the power is smaller. This mechanism render the armor invisible when it is angled more than 72 degrees and higher. Sweden engineers based their designs on this fact. Please consider this idea and implement it in the game. I love this game and I realy want to make it better.
While you explain the each type of shell, starting from 3:12, it would be nice to write each shell name on top. and every place where convenient, it would make it easier to follow which shell is in use. Otherwise great video and info. thanks a lot.
"Geometry, 7th grade" Even though it's more like 9th grade, it's still simple stuff. Just imagine that you have to penetrate more armor when firing at a low angle.
I don't remember US JHS math addressing sin and cos in 7th grade. I mean, you could learn it on your own if you wanted to, but they were busy cramming variables down everyone's throats since grade school spent way too long going over the basics again and again and again.
Some of them are yes, like the normalization efffect and how relative armor thickness works. Only the "two caliber and three caliber" rules do not exist IRL.
TonyOneBlairoby Obviously you lack critical thinking skills. Read between the lines: this only applies to "gold" shells. I've been playing this game since 2012. I know there are tanks that carry APCR naturally. Those are fine. (Update) See? _Rayth_ got the idea. As some friendly advice, I suggest picking up an MCAT book on Critical Analysis and Reading Skills, or CARS. While the MCAT is a standardized examination for medical school admission, CARS is something every person should have.
All this useless when the game uses hitboxes instead of realistic interiors, and your tank gets penetrated and damaged on places where there is only supposed to have filling of metal behind.
Someone shot my flag and did damage to my tank and I died by the e75 that shoots my exhaust pipe that was slightly sticking out. Nothing else but an inch of metal...i die 80 percent of the time because of hitboxing rng bs.
The majority of them do count in real life; however with modern day Uranium tipped shells it is a bit different penetration wise. I'm not sure about the 3 * caliber rule though, it may or may not be true.
No they don't. The shell has weight and therefore inertia. The roof of a car doesn't have the strength to resist the inertia of the shell and it will tear. Think of it like this, flatten a piece of tinfoil over the top of a bucket and tie it tight then press on it with your hand it will tear. You hand has no penetration value at all, 0mm. but the force you are applying, is so strong the tinfoil cannot hold together.
Nathan Watt No its not true. theres even a video from wargaming where they shoot with a tank at a car roof and the shell bounces. let me search for that vid
hello world of tanks, if the shell hits a line which intersects 2 faces, which face will it have to go through, and will the shell have to go through the combined thickness of each e.g. goes through one plat only to realize it is piercing into the side of the second plate, is this also increased by normal?

to calculate armor thickness it's the "thickness / cos the angle in degrees".
eg: 100mm / cos 60deg = 200mm of effective thickness.
"Geometry, 7th grade" Even though it's more like 9th grade, it's still simple stuff. Just imagine that you have to penetrate more armor when firing at a low angle.
