Hey Andy Simply love your videos and evening on a friday even I sometimes go for your videos instead of a movie💪 Just thinking… have you considered doing a new video based on updated venusOS with Victrons new DESS combined with also the dbus serialbattery, which also has been upgraded alot. I run VenusOS 2.92 and dbus 0.14.3. Some new Nodered do not work in this “old” software. Greetings from Denmark, hoping for a new exiting video💪
If you have only one BMS it will work but with several battery banks, connecting just one BMS does not make sense anymore and I would use a smart shunt.
How can you access this from a remote location? Is there a way to connect the Victron battery charger with BT to the venus OS Raspi, just like the Ruuvi, so it can be monitored remotely? I have 2 touch, displays for the RASPI 4b, but none of them work with the drivers available.
What is the minimum equipment you need to use the victron ESS? I'm looking at making a DIY system that works in tandem with the grid but doesn't feedback to the grid when demand is lower. I know victron can do this through a meter sensor but victron want over £2300 for everything to use ESS and I'm sure I don't need everything they say
My Pi 3b+ is running V2.89 I have tried this update but it just hangs. I noticed that there are two versions 2 & 4 ? Does this account for the 3 not accepting the upgrade? AND YES the screen will still not dim despite checking all the time out settings, which is why I was hoping this would end the ever bright screen that runs 24/7 over my boats chart table !!!!!!!!
Also Andy is it worth putting a BMS on a bank of AGM batteries that are nearing the end of life. The bank consists of 8S2P 6-volt cells. If so would you have any suggestions of the BMS I should use?
Hi, Couldn't you help me, sort it out? I have raspberry p3 with firmware 2.89. The connections are the same as in your video via usb(diy), the Smart Shunt and the solar controller. After a day of work, it turns itself(solar controller) disappears from the network. After a reboot raspberry , appears again and turn on. What is it? Bag ?
Whaaaaaaat - was exactly what i said when the Music kicked in. Randomly came across this vid searching for exactly the same issue, VenusOS 2.66. After recently updating my Broadcast Van from an EasySolar 12/1600/30 to an EasySolar 24/3000/70 - meant the 1600 was available to use in the Garage, prodominately as a Backup for Server equipment that at the moment runs off 3 seperate UPS' that are Horrible and only give a few minutes of run time. Compared to now having the 300A LifePo4 from the Van in here (because I built a seperate 24v280Ah Battery Kit for the Van.) Long story still going - yeah it means the Pi I had as the VRM for the 12v system is now in use for, well the same system, but needs some updates, particularly since I can't update the Multi-Plus itself at the moment as it can't be updated by such an old VENUS version.

Hi, That’s a great video and tutorial sir. I like it. And it got me curious....such as I have a question as below: Q: Since I think (correct me if I’m wrong) raspberry is design to run Linux and therefore the Cerbo OS image must be Linux based, then, also since Linux can run from a removable memory e.g USB flash disk, my question is, Can the Cerbo OS image be installed on a usb flash disk, and can this disk then be booted up on a computer ? Can victron be configured when to feed-in to grid from battery? I want to get a victron multiplus II however there is one must have feature I can't confirm for my automation needs. I am on amber electric which gives different rates for feed in according to the wholesale power price, I need an inverter capable of exporting power from a battery to the grid when I program it to. I have already made a few python programs with the amber API to turn various things on and off according to price so that part is not a problem, need to know if Victron can be told when to feed in to the grid.
No inverter does feed in power from your battery as far as I know. That would make no sense. The inverter/charger will use solar power to power your loads first, excess goes into your battery. If the battery us full and there is still excess energy from solar, it will feed this power back to the grid, if you have a feed-in contract in place.
@@OffGridGarageAustralia Tesla powerwall and LG Resu both can do this in combination with amber smart switch, I want to find a DIY solution so I can use my own battery presumably at a much lower cost per kwh than a Tesla powerwall. An example of how this works is... On a sunny day with plenty of wind I can buy power at maybe 10cents/kwh or less in the middle of the day off peak. Then when the evening comes and power is nearly 40cents/kwh I can sell some of my stored energy back to the grid for a higher feed-in rate than if I had solar on the house generating in the middle of the day.
@@HAZZA24937 Yeah, I understand the concept of a virtual power plant. But is this allowed to do and is it still a DIY project? I know some people having an agreement with their retailer to sell power from their battery back to the grid during peak times for a lot of money. $4-$7/kWh I heard of... Very interesting concept and it would make a lot of sense to smoot out peaks.
@@OffGridGarageAustralia I'm not 100% sure if it is allowed in Australia or not yet, some countries it is but you don't always get paid. Amber electrics app shows feed in prices for every half hour block of the day and night, so that implies it is allowed I will have to ask them to know for sure on that part. I found a very good video from victrons channel going through all the features of ESS and it answered my question, feed into grid from battery with Multi or Quatro is possible and done, can even be configured to be controlled by external logic which is what I want.
@@HAZZA24937 Yes, it is allowed in Au. I know a guy at the Sunshine Coast who does that. But it needs a certain metering as well as contracts in place. It's not something you could just do. Regulations...
Hi, New subscriberr here. Can Venus os monitor two different solar battery banks with one raspberry? My current setup has two of the following: 500A battery smart shunt, MPPT 75 15 solar charger charger, 100A battery protect and two 24v 50A batteries in the same building.
I think it's horrible that you need to pay 50 dollars for a temperature and gumidity sensor.. is this really the only option? I'm not made of gold! Wonder if it matters where the data comes from.. or is there a way to use something like the dbus-serialbattery as a driver for "foreign" sensors..
There might be other options as well but this seems to be the easiest and most reliable one. It's plug'n play. Any other solution will cost money as well, not just the sensor but also the implementation into the system and the time. The Ruuvi Tags just work. So, I thought $50AU is a great price. I have now three of them in the system.
@@OffGridGarageAustralia definitely the easiest, I'll give you that! Maybe it's time for me to sink in to understanding how to plug in to VenusOs myself instead of sitting back and waiting for the easy solution, if I want it cheap too 🙂

Could not believe that Victron is leaving their customers so behind with a system that is no longer supported and looks like lost. I am not a Victron customer for some other reasons , miss some features but got a working system with manufacturer support and at least 10 year of warranty which Victron does no offer for their parts and inverters. So it was an easy choice and I am also in the eco system and app world of the inverter manufacaturer due to canbus support and now I am running the DIY lifepo in their system as it would look and act as the inverter manufacturers battery. Of cause I lost flexibility and scalability but also got the inverters a lot cheaper: 10 kw with up to 14 kWp and a 4,7 kW Hybrid 48V system for 2650€ incl. 10 year warranty and domestic support At the end some things are not possible but with not so much benefits, but world wide app and browser support to charge the battery or EV in different priority if needed. But pretty great explanation about the update progress and start from scratch even though I hate to see abandoned like this. So we can only wish RIP 2.66 - left behind and forgotten.
Thanks Gordon, don't need to anymore. It's been linked to my account already so nobody can connect to it any more without triggering a request email to me.
just updated to 2.92 and a little problem occured. I use modbus communication and the modbus id of my multiplus and bms 602 changed, so I had to change it also in my (second) raspberry fhem installation. Had that once before after a reboot... it seems, that the id is often changed, why ever.
I've seen the ID of my MP II changing aver here and then. Not sure why it does nto stick. The old ID still shows up in the device list and I need to remove it manually. Not sure if this is a bug or has a sense...
Never put out your SD card when the device is working... unless you want to break it ... just imagine that in this moment there might be some write going on and it will cause file corruption and system or device crash

Really interesting! Thank you very much!

Would it be right if I use circuit breakers to protect the solar panel in absence of fuses?
They need to be DC breakers. The problem here is the lag of tripping. A fuse is preferred for these installations.
Hello, thank you a lot.

The Pi display does not work from this package manager, i lost display on touch screen. It must be installed from command line?
It is included in the packages as RpiDisplaySetup. So that's not working?
Maybe report this to Kevin so he can look into it. github.com/kwindrem/GuiMods
@@OffGridGarageAustralia Hi Andy, the inactive package contains the raspi screen install. It downloads, stores but not installing, like the other packages. It gives a message that says can no5 be installed, it has to be run/ installed from comand line. The click ok and option to remov3 this package.
It looks like a bug, and putty is needed for screen to work. Hope this makes sense.
brilliant vid. all working fine ,,,but how do you set the pin on the pi? when local connection is used it asks for the pin that is shown on the pi
Hi Andy, I have a 2 x PIP5048 charger/inverter in series. Is it possible to get the serial data from these into Victron Venus?
Hey Andy
Simply love your videos and evening on a friday even I sometimes go for your videos instead of a movie💪
Just thinking… have you considered doing a new video based on updated venusOS with Victrons new DESS combined with also the dbus serialbattery, which also has been upgraded alot. I run VenusOS 2.92 and dbus 0.14.3. Some new Nodered do not work in this “old” software.
Greetings from Denmark, hoping for a new exiting video💪
Hi Andy, what’s the minimal system requirements for Venus OS? Can’t find anywhere. Can it be installed on one of the others single board computers?
All info here: github.com/victronenergy/venus/wiki
👍💪Great video and tutorial💪👍 Now I'll dare to replace the old OS version running in my RasPi without any concerns, thank you 👍
Get a second 16GB SD card and go for it. If it does not work, you can always go back.
Just checked my Pi Venus OS and it was on 2.89... I know I've updated it using the menus a few times over the last 12 months.
It may not go further than 2.89 by itself though...
Hi,
Couldn't you help me, sort it out? I have raspberry p3 with firmware 2.89. The connections are the same as in your video via usb(diy), the Smart Shunt and the solar controller. After a day of work, it turns itself(solar controller) disappears from the network. After a reboot raspberry , appears again and turn on.
What is it? Bag ?
Ruuvi means screw. Hello from Finland home of ruuvi tag
Screw it!😁 Why would you call a product like this? Because you screw the tag to something?
@@OffGridGarageAustralia been wondering same thing
Whaaaaaaat - was exactly what i said when the Music kicked in. Randomly came across this vid searching for exactly the same issue, VenusOS 2.66. After recently updating my Broadcast Van from an EasySolar 12/1600/30 to an EasySolar 24/3000/70 - meant the 1600 was available to use in the Garage, prodominately as a Backup for Server equipment that at the moment runs off 3 seperate UPS' that are Horrible and only give a few minutes of run time. Compared to now having the 300A LifePo4 from the Van in here (because I built a seperate 24v280Ah Battery Kit for the Van.)
Long story still going - yeah it means the Pi I had as the VRM for the 12v system is now in use for, well the same system, but needs some updates, particularly since I can't update the Multi-Plus itself at the moment as it can't be updated by such an old VENUS version.
Moin!
Lg Stefan
Yes, possible. You also need the holders and enclosures for NH fuses which add to the costs.
Hi,
That’s a great video and tutorial sir. I like it. And it got me curious....such as I have a question as below:
Q: Since I think (correct me if I’m wrong) raspberry is design to run Linux and therefore the Cerbo OS image must be Linux based, then, also since Linux can run from a removable memory e.g USB flash disk, my question is, Can the Cerbo OS image be installed on a usb flash disk, and can this disk then be booted up on a computer ?
Regards,
Jesse
I can confirm it is working also on cerbo
Yes, that will work with any device running Venus OS.
Thank you mr. thanks to you i am learning a lot could you help us doing a video to visualize Shelly 3 em on your rasberri py?
Thanks you for this... It was great to follow I had 2.89 and wouldnt update and folled was amazingly easy
Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I can even see this for my MP II as well that the ID changes from time to time. Not sure why...
can you monitor 2 completely separate systems with this , example a 48v system(500a shunt0 and 12v system( charge controller or DC-Dc converter)
Thanks Andy
Is it works with RPI 3B+ without any Bluetooth dongle? Just with Bluetooth chip inside RPI 3B+?
Yes, it does. That's how I use it.
Wow.. putty.. haven't heard that mentioned for years (of course I haven't been in I.T. for years), but I used to use that a lot.
I still use it to login to the Pi from time to time.
Hi Andy, you are a great help in configuring the Rpi. Many thanks for your interesting tutorials and tests. As for the compatibility of the external wifi. It works very well with the Alfa AWUS036ACH on the rasberry pi. This does not work on the Cerbo GX.
This is what I wanted you to know in hopes of making a small contribution. Thanks again for your interesting videos.
I wish you continued success in what you do and want to do.

Thanks a lot, Jean Pierre.

Thank you for your great video do you know if 2.9 is available for rasp pi 4 v1.5 have had to use a modded version as it wouldn't work from around Feb this year

Hi, I want to install linux onto a tv-box and venus os on tlo them. How may I find out, howto install venus os without image, step by step? Don't ask me why, I just won't to work with SD-Cards or external Disc's on the pi's and some tv-boxes has enough Memory to install a hole System. I know this, because I've installed IObroker on some of them ....

Do I have to Instal the Version You Have for the Mods :packages from GitHub?
@@OffGridGarageAustralia
Tesla powerwall and LG Resu both can do this in combination with amber smart switch, I want to find a DIY solution so I can use my own battery presumably at a much lower cost per kwh than a Tesla powerwall.
@@OffGridGarageAustralia
I'm not 100% sure if it is allowed in Australia or not yet, some countries it is but you don't always get paid.
I do not see a link to download firmware for a Pi 3 B+. There's a link for the Pi 2 & Pi 4 but none for Pi 3.
Firmware for the Pi? I don't think I have ever shown this in my videos...
Hi, New subscriberr here. Can Venus os monitor two different solar battery banks with one raspberry? My current setup has two of the following: 500A battery smart shunt, MPPT 75 15 solar charger charger, 100A battery protect and two 24v 50A batteries in the same building.
Very usefull, thanks !
Thank you.
Hi Andy, can I upgrade on my venus gx
Yes, that will work the same way with the blind install.
What file do I need to download? I downloaded the first file but it didn't work.
I had an incompatable micro sd card. All is working now.
Thank you Sir!
Hhhhhumidity*
There might be other options as well but this seems to be the easiest and most reliable one. It's plug'n play. Any other solution will cost money as well, not just the sensor but also the implementation into the system and the time. The Ruuvi Tags just work. So, I thought $50AU is a great price. I have now three of them in the system.
@@OffGridGarageAustralia definitely the easiest, I'll give you that!
Maybe it's time for me to sink in to understanding how to plug in to VenusOs myself instead of sitting back and waiting for the easy solution, if I want it cheap too 🙂
@@fezdk do it! I'll support you and show your scripts/results on the channel.
Then it must be a very old Pi with a n old versionof the OS. Because Venus OS is on version v2.92.
There was a roadblock at 2.66 and 2.89 again where Venus did not update anymore without a fresh rebuild. The Pi is a 3 B+, so not that old...
Hi, it will also work on Cerbo GX ??
Yes.

Failed to Connect. Make Sure to enable Remote Console Form Lan, and reboot the device.

Kaputte SD Karte?
New glasses?
Yes
10 year warranty and domestic support
At the end some things are not possible but with not so much benefits, but world wide app and browser support to charge the battery or EV in different priority if needed.
But pretty great explanation about the update progress and start from scratch even though I hate to see abandoned like this.
So we can only wish RIP 2.66 - left behind and forgotten.
