  • I tried to upload something along the lines of this clip a few years ago but I put much more in it and the credits music ended up muting the video though copyright. Anyway it's from the end of the movie when Steve Jobs confronts Bill after the Macintosh announcement about stealing from them to make Windows. It's quite a powerful scene in the movie and shows that Noah Wiley is so much better at playing Steve Jobs then Ashton Kutcher. People seem to have gotten it into their heads that this is a Steve Jobs movie but it's really more like a 50/50 Apple/Microsoft movie.

    This scene is so much better when you watch the interactions between Steve and Bill that happen earlier. The best is the scene where Steve calls Bill up and demands he come over to his house. Bill does, and Jobs just goes on a massive rant. Gates, however, just stands there and calmly waits for Jobs to wear himself out. Gates then calmly walks him through Microsoft's work (at least what he'll admit to at this point). By the end of the visit, Gates has Jobs thinking of their business relationship like a family (hence the line in this scene).

Jobs is never been an inventor in professional sense and he is still better than gates because he would redo the whole thing rather than just copy it, although apple granted the right from xerox in 1983 after the long legal battle and Microsoft wasn’t. Microsoft’s vary foundation was piracy from start, ms dos was a ripoff from CP/M system and internet explorer was literally a replica of Marathon browser, zune was imitated from a dead media player called “real player”, and notoriously the xbox was just a reskinned from a dead amiga console that was failed to release in late 1990. I actually have the book and at the beginning of the TV movie, it is referred as the source. They did change a few things to make it more interesting. One example - Bill Gates did actually forget to bring a tie to the meeting with IBM. In the TV movie, Ballmer buys a tie from a guy in the bathroom doing his business. In reality, they waited outside a mall and immediately rushed when the mall opened in order to buy a tie for Gates to bring to the meeting with IBM.

    Steve is criticizing Bill over the theft of Macintosh elements to create Windows.
    But then Bill points out the fact that what went into creating the Lisa and, later, the Macintosh were ideas Apple took from the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center.
    What Microsoft took from Apple, Apple took from Xerox in a similar way.
    Whether Macintosh or Windows succeeded, the credit for the ideas of the GUI and the manner with which the user could interface with it did not genuinely belong to Apple nor Microsoft, hence the "rich neighbor" metaphor.

    • @liambrown8074
      @liambrown8074 6 лет назад +17

      From my reading, the Xerox/Apple deal was a genuine deal. Apple got technology that Xerox engineers had developed, and Xerox got Apple stock in exchange. The Microsoft deal was different, and I don't know exactly what was in the contract. Apparently Jobs thought there was some language to preclude competition between the two companies, but contract law wasn't his strong point.

      If you do some research, you'll find out it was a deal between Apple and Xerox Parc. Xerox would purchase 1 million dollars in Apple stock and give a "demo" of the Alto computer which didn't even work(not a complete product or software) to Apple. Steve was impressed and wanted to create a Product with a GUI. Lisa was where Apple wanted to hit its mark but failed. The demo was no longer than a whole minute and Apple did not have access to their lines of codes, thus Apple did not steal xerox`s software even Steve Jobs himself admitted over a dozens of time about the xerox deal and demo. On the other hand, Microsoft was working with Apple to build apps for the Macintosh. They,Microsoft had full access to Apple's OS and lines of code and they stole Apple's software NOT idea.

    • @Watcher3223
      @Watcher3223 6 лет назад +8

      Well, hey, why do research at this point.
      You did it for me. ;-)
      What lines of code in Windows can be shown as being directly duplicated from lines of code in the Macintosh OS? If it was copied, the code would have to be recompiled to work on x86 since it's a different architecture to the one used for the 68000 that the original Mac ran on.
      However, you don't have to copy lines of code to take the idea of somebody else and use it. You can write original code to execute an unoriginal idea.

    Microsoft made software that allowed people to make their own products. Hence the explosion of computer products. Apple just made computer products. Microsoft freed users. Apple closed them in. Apple a "better" (prettier) product" than a computer licensed to run Microsoft? Arguably. But a better computer? Not even playing the same game. That's what Jobs, and the rest of the Apple cult "don't get". But 99% of computer buyers don't get it either. Nor do they need to. They just want a product they can use to tweet, play games, and view porno. Microsoft is now also not serving the 1% of real computer users. They are closing off the Microsoft system. That's because the real user working in their garage can still come up with something that could blow them both out of the water. That's the opening right now. The gauntlet has been tossed. I remember watching this live, first airing. Steve Jobs came across as a bastard of a human being for most of the film. He is pushy, arrogant, demeaning. He denies being the father to his kid. He humiliates a perspective employee in an interview. He leaves out compensation for his original employees when he goes public. He flies a pirate flag because he is just stealing tech left and right, and wrongly believes that IBM is his biggest threat. 99% of this film makes him look bad. You have to really, really look hard to like him at all. That was my take some 25 years ago

      The determinants there were cost and length. A VHS tape could record for longer, and was cheaper. VHS was the cheaper standard item for recording TV broadcasts and renting films for non-cinephiles. The only thing is that Windows did not really get good until Windows 3.1 that was early 1990s. Apple had a head start with the GUI but they sold their computers at too high a price which cost them market share. There would be other companies like Atari with the 520ST and Commodore who bought the Amiga company and those system cost less in 1986 than a Mac did. If Apple had not priced their computers so much higher than everyone else, perhaps Windows would have never gotten a chance to dominate the computer industry if the Mac market share was higher.

      Yep. Gates democratized home computing. Apple products are prohibitively expensive, always have been. Windows and PCs blew Apple out of the water when the Internet age began and when PCs took over America in the 1990s in a big, affordable way. Jobs was a genius and a visionary to be sure, but his babies the LISA and the much-overrated (but still momentarily significant) Macintosh were very expensive failures. The new millennium saw Apple's resurrection, and Jobs was a big part of that, but he still had the same ego, the same belief that he knew better than the consumer, that Apple systems should defy individualized modification, and somehow sold the world at large on his sainthood. If you dig, and not even much, you'll find quickly that Gates is the much better human being, while still being a great business man. But the hip like Jobs, whether they understand him or not.

      I was the other way around tbh. I used to love apple, then I finally built a PC with windows, it’s just better.

    Having been a customer of both, since the late 70s, I can say Microsoft won some battles but Apple eventually won the war.

      Really "The war" ended a long time ago. Apple have grown significantly by creating a massive shift in the mobile phone market. Microsoft were too comfortable and complacent and they didn't act in time to really turn things around for Windows Phone. I think they've abandoned it at this point in favour of an Android strategy.
      They still have a prominent position in the desktop space but it's become less relevant since computing for the average person has moved to mobile phones.

      @@CraigBickerstaff I am your regular non Mensan Joe Blow who is competent with technology . Talked with another guy like me at a Ruby Tuesday’s. He was familiar with this movie . We both had IPhones . That point was made . “ Hey Microsoft you owned the world ? How could you blow it ? “. I will say that Windows 7 was ubiquitous and it was popular but still not even that matters anymore .

      @Vance Wankel “ We’re better than you “ ? Well anyway I don’t know which four you mean “ You’re too late ! “ I will count as three words because a contraction is not two separate words but that did come back at Microsoft when they tried their hand at a Windows phone but finally gave up because.,,,, they were too late !

    It actually *did* matter.
