  • Were you shocked at the results of the 2016 American presidential election? Most people were, but Stephen Harper was not one of them. Here, the former Prime Minister of Canada explains the trends that foreshadowed Trump’s victory and left many political elites looking wildly out of touch.

    Script:
I was elected to the Parliament of Canada seven times-three times as Prime Minister. I did not expect Donald Trump to be elected President of the United States. But unlike most observers, I did think it was at least possible. Why?
Because I sensed, as Mr. Trump surely did, that the political landscape had shifted.
The underlying issue is this: Over the last few decades, thanks to globalization, a billion people-mostly in the emerging markets of Asia-have lifted themselves out of poverty. This, of course, is a good thing. Yet, in many Western countries, the incomes of working people have stagnated or even declined over the same period.
In short, many Americans voted for Donald Trump because the global economy has not been working for them. We can pretend that this is a false perception. We can keep trying to convince people that they misunderstand their own lives. Or we can try to understand what they are saying and offer some solutions.
    I prefer the latter approach.
    Let me begin with this:
In our contemporary world, there are, as British journalist David Goodhart describes it, those who can live “Anywhere,” and those who live “Somewhere.”
Imagine you work for an international bank, computer company, or consulting firm. You can wake up in New York, London, or Singapore and feel at home. Your work is not threatened by import competition or technological dislocation. You vocally support all international trade agreements and high levels of immigration. You are one of those who can live Anywhere. There are a lot of those people. But there are a lot more completely unlike them.
Let’s say you’re a factory worker, a small-businessperson, or in retail sales. Your work has been disrupted by outsourcing, cheap imports and technological change. Your children attend the local schools and your aging parents live nearby. Your social life is connected to a local church, sports team, or community group.
If things go badly at your company, or if policy choices by politicians turn out to be wrong, you can’t just shift your life to somewhere else. Like it or not, you depend on the economic policies of your national or state government. When it doesn’t come through for you, you’re not happy. And when it ignores you entirely, you get angry.
It’s easy for Anywheres to dismiss these concerns. But the Anywheres’ faith in global solutions and multi-national political bodies is founded more on fantasy than fact.
The fact is, the critical functions of laws and regulations and monetary and fiscal stability, among other things, are provided by nations, not global institutions.
The nation, with all its flaws, is a concrete reality. The “global community” is little more than a concept. Yet it is the Anywheres, with their faith in globalization-not the Somewheres-who have dominated the politics of almost every advanced country.
    That is, until now.
This sea-change is not limited to the United States. The same dynamics-“Anywhere” elites versus “Somewhere” populists-is playing out all across the Western world.

I haven't mentioned a lot of things I know ordinary people would disapprove of, but it doesn't necessarily mean that those things people's disapprove of aren't still in my personality. I'm not saying he's a bad guy or that your thoughts on him are wrong- but your logic isn't in tune with reality.
The reality is that people get away with theft, murder, and rape all the time- these are physical actions which are able to be proved or disproven- and yet, we are flawed in knowing 100 percent of the time whether they are guilty.
If people get away with provable, factual crimes, then how are we to know what goes on the inside of a person we aren't close with? How are we to know whether they are good or bad people, except based on faith?
This could be a fine man, perhaps a little ignorant, but not necessarily purposefully misleading, because I don't know enough to come to a conclusion.
Instead of deciding right now, impatiently, blind from ignorance, that "he is a good man" or "he is a bad man", I simply say: he is a human being capable of all the good and bad complexities as any other human being-
Placing blind faith on it now could be a disaster though, because I don't know what this human is truly capable of. We all have the power of Hitler and of angels inside all of us. You can't know

It’s important to note that the two major parties are hardly any different from one another, which is why more and more Americans have grown to dislike the two-party system.

This is a great economic analysis of the political forces that led to Trump's victory. My father works in the auto industry, and I remember growing up hearing about how China and Japan were ripping us off on trade, how the elites were buying elections and using politicians as leverage for their own gain. I remember feeling surprised at the time that no politician really talked about the issues with globalization, and the neglect of the "forgotten men and women" laid fertile soil for the rise of Donald Trump. The fact that the left wing is so fiercely critical of not only Trump, but also critical of his generally poorer, less educated supporters for being stupid and racist or "deplorable" shows that they really don't care about the issues his voters face, but rather would prefer just to shut them up, de-platform them and ignore their problems altogether. The only left wing candidate that I've noticed actually caring about these issues is Bernie Sanders. Say what you want about him, but at least he cares about Trump voters and the problems they're facing.

The demographic that came out strongly for Trump hasn't been courted for decades and that's why we saw him win in states like Michigan and Pennsylvania with a large white working class population. I was critical of Stephen Harper and the conservatives. Now that I see what followed after him, I want him back in office pronto. Now we have girls voting for Prime Ministers just because they're handsome and some girls in the U.S trying to elect a president NOT because she's the best candidate but just because she's the only woman. The world has gone from informed decision-making to flaky superficial choices made by groups who's worst qualities are just pandered to. It's no longer what's best for everyone, it's all about groups telling society what's best without needing facts at all. Anyone who doesn't agree with the group can be safely ignored and be crushed because they're just evil and aren't human. The media has been hijacked by one-sided, extremist opinions and seem to be siding with that attitude that they're right and the narratives creep in to create stories about every event. That isn't journalism, that's mere propaganda. When the truth which was formerly created from all sides is now claimed as wrong and biased, instability and insanity have taken over. Facts are replaced by propaganda, rumour mills and fear-mongering. It's the same story repeated daily in an echo chamber. If the facts are all wrong and everything must be changed, no one is to be listened to and order means nothing at all to anyone. Whatever we're obsessed and fixated on as a society will destroy us.

I mean, he lost but resigned instead of continuing to represent his constituents. I liked the guy, but we needed change I got to admit. He helped support oil, which is the only reason why he was so popular here in Alberta. I don’t like Trudeau because he doesn’t have a solid position, but I don’t think Harper is fit to lead Canada again, he had his time and he did his change.

@@lansiman He's probably talking about how after losing to the Liberal Party four years ago, Harper would have continued being a representative (or MP as it is), but he decided to step down as MP the next year. If he no longer felt like representing his district/riding in parliament, then he can't represent and govern a party and country.

I currently live in California as an ANYWHERE, but I fully endorse nationalism (without murder). My only issue is with my deep rooted envy that, while the US has Trump, Canada has Trud… I can’t even type his full name, it’s so embarrassing. It’s like bringing a cabbage to a beaver fight.
In the past, I voted for Harper in every election because the socialist Liberals didn’t seem to understand how the economy worked, and then I moved my entire Engineering family to the US. Someday, I would like to go back to Canada, but only after the current bout of political silliness has died down.
It’s sad to watch Americans thinking that the Canadian flavor of socialism works, when it completely doesn’t, and it’s hard to listen to friends and family say you have been in the US too long when you suggest that personal prosperity is a good thing.

We actually don't know now if a Canadian minister is the best for the position or they just happen to have the right genitalia because Trudeau in 2015 said that he'll make sure the cabinet will be 50% male 50% female. Even though the pool of MP's is 75% male 25% female.

The anywhere somewhere argument is less and less applicable in the world we live in. At first international corporations, thanks mainly to the tax code and policy changes made by the Reagan Administration, moved jobs overseas. But in large part, US customers did not punish their defection to china to make higher profits while taking a US tax credit to move the plant. We were all too happy to save 10 cents while our neighbors were laid off.
In the current global market, more "Anywhere" employees are finding that less expensive labor from anywhere can do their jobs too. So as jobs are sent overseas, and jobs from truck driving to moping continue to be automated the Anywhere employees are finding themselves on the unemployment line along with their less well-educated countrymen and women.
Why pay a Harvard Business School graduate 200K a year to work in finance when you can pay a Cambridge Business School graduate 40K to work from Karachi. Add to this the tella health and innovations in AI and the future is more cost effective for corporations but much more bleek for well educated Americans or any other 1st world workers.

It is a very good video with a massive flaw. It is technology and the free market creating these changes. You cannot buck the market unless you want to try socialism. Steven Harper is arguing for nationalisation and protectionism.

    • @Blaze6108
      @Blaze6108 5 лет назад +3

It looks common sense because it doesn't really make any arguments. Both of the groups of people in which he tries to split the population apart are not really defined in any significant way outside of arbitrarily calling them "somewheres" and "anywheres", and the points expressed for one group could just as well be translated for the other group. Employing labor that can theoretically be replaced, depending on govt regulations and relying on local economic situations aren't really exclusive to any specific class of people. The video just draws an arbitrary line between some workers and others (and I'm sure that there's definitely no hidden intent in splitting the groups apart further by portraying one as nerdy, glass-wearing office types who live in a giant tower while showing the other as small shop owners and working-class people while conveniently ignoring the complexity of both of these labor markets).
