Thank you so much for a great video. At 83 yrs I finally found a name to the method I was taught to knit when I was 15 yrs by my mother who learned from a nurse she worked with who was from Germany. All these yrs I have been told “ you knit funny and it’s wrong.” Personally I found it easier than other ways and now I know I wasn’t crazy to keep knitting that way. I would enjoy any other videos you have on this method and I have watched Fiber Chats from the first time you made videos. Thank you again.
Great video! I began using this technique to knit 1x1 rib & it was a game changer! Maybe a video about how you alternate between knit & purl in one row?
Ahhhh!!!! This explains why when I started to relearn how to knit at 31 (I am now 57) I felt like I was “doing it wrong”. My Polish Grandmom taught me to knit when I was 4 years old. My muscles remembered those lessons when I was 31 and picked up my needles again. I was told I was knitting wrong when experienced American knitters saw me knitting when I was 31 and was re-teaching myself how to knit. My hands remembered my Grandmom’s lessons! So, what did I do? Because I was told it was wrong, I had to learn how to knit Western style. I feel like I was robbed of the precious lessons from my Grandmom, because I was told my Eastern style of knitting was wrong. This breaks my heart!!!! My Grandmom gave me a gift of immeasurable value. I had no idea until now!
Sad other knitters weren’t encouraging you of your unique lessons from Grandmom. I hope you can re-embrace the eastern method again as I am learning it new!
I would want to continue knitting in the way I was taught. It’s your heritage. No way is correct or wrong. I’m sad for you that you felt you must change. You knit how it makes you warm and happy in your heart.
This is the best video explaining continental combination knitting. I will be referring people to this!!💜 Thank you! I was taught by my Mom this method over 65 years ago, and have had people tell me how wrong I knit. She always called it the “fastest knitting”!💕😄
I once took a class on Combination Knitting, the instructor went so fast that I never could get the hang of it. I love your very clear instructions and look forward to learning more on this style of knitting.
Thank you so much for your clear concise explanation of combination knitting and orientation of stitches. I appreciate your clear and deliberate demonstration of each stitch. Your explanation of how this all works has me practicing it ! Please continue to make these teaching videos in this technique.

When you called this Grandma’s method I felt like she was encouraging me on through this sharing. Thank you for reminding me of her and her presence in my knitting. I am sold and I am converting to Grandma’s method right away! ❤

I'm so happy to know that it is absolutely legit! Feels like I found my knitting tribe today! 🥰 Thank you for such a great video, and for showing the world that there are many ways to knit, and everyone's way is good!❤
As long as you understand the direction of the stitches and the fabric you are trying to achieve, it’s all good. Many different ways to achieve the same result

My Italian grandmother taught me to knit English style. I knew I had watched her knit in a much quicker fashion. She was very fast! My mom taught me to knit English style (throwing) which is still my default. Years later, we were living in Israel and I saw people knitting like you are showing in the video and so I learned this method. I never knew that it had a more specific name other than continental, but because the stitch orientation was changed from the knit to purl row, I thought maybe I had learned it incorrectly. It’s really so much easier than continental with the western stitch orientation especially on the purl stitch. Thank you so much, Irina. I sure knew how to do combination knitting, I love it, especially for ribbing, but my tension isn't that good when I hold my yarn in the left hand. My light bulb moment in this tuto was how you tension your yarn, between your index and major fingers + with your hand pressing a bit on the left needle, that was the missing part of my puzzle, I'll try and see if it helps regulate may tension when I try to knit continental. Thanks so much !!! What a great gift for the New Year ! Of course I am interested in decrases and increases in combination knitting.

I am a continental combination knitter, if you unraver 19 stitches and measure the purl row , I use 1-1/2" more yarn then on the knit row. It is good info to know because of the yarn you would need in a project. Normal is about 1/4" between the knit and purl row in 19 stitches.
Thank you for taking time to show us how to purl and knit continental style. I am an English style knitter and have tried this method off and on but wasn’t very satisfied with my guage. It seems that the way one controls their yarn can have an influence on that 🤔Now that I see how you hold your yarn I will give it a try ☺️I do however have a question, have you noticed by chance if you have less pain in your wrists and shoulders when knitting continental?
It depends a lot on your posture, how you hold yarn, what needles/yarn you use, how often you take breaks. You might enjoy my interview with Carson Demers to learn more about ergonomics of knitting. Here is the link Knitting Comfortably, Carson Demers | Fiberchats, Episode: 195 ruclips.net/video/lVV8XxXQRnY/видео.html
I’m very interested in learning combination knitting, to avoid injury. I’m an English style knitter, but taught myself to knit continental for knit and purl patterns and Fair Isle. Often I switch back and forth for ergonomic reasons. For twisted rib, I resorted to Norwegian purl because Continental purl causes pain. How would I work twisted rib using combination knitting?
Excellent video tutorial, Irina. I oftentimes will use Continental style to knit the knit stitches and then revert to English style (throwing) to do the purl stitches. I was taught English style (throwing) originally when I was younger. This method that you demonstrate seems to be more ergonomically correct and results in a beautiful fabric. My question is how do you knit stitches in your method that a pattern requests KTBL (Knit through back loop) or KTFL (knit through front loop) and have them oriented in the way a pattern requests? As well, I do hope you do a video demonstration on increases and decreases and any other stitch requirements used for lace knitting using the Combination Continental Style. Thank you for helping knitters around the world with their knitting skills - much appreciated! Happy New Year and happy knitting....
This was a great video! Thank you so much. Could you do a video on increases and decreases? I knit this way and there is not a lot of information out there. Would you consider doing a series on this way if knitting?
Thanks very much Irina, I would like to become a fully combination knitter and would like to understand more aspects of combination knitting. For example how to purl a purl stitch, is that through the back loop also? ❤
It depends on how that purl stitch is positioned on the needle. Basically you always knit and purl through the leg of the stitch closest to the right hand needle
Thank you for this! Could you show twisted rib in combination continental knitting? I couldn’t find any resources on it, and also not figure it out myself.
I started knitting about a month ago, English style, and decided to try continental after seeing some videos about it. Ive struggled all week to get comfortable with purling, it was incredibly frustrating- until I stumbled across your video! I can’t believe how much easier this is! Do I need to cast on differently for this?
Well I didnt know it had a name😊. I akways knit that way until the last year, then I switched to the 'regular' purl because I didnt want to cause decreases and or increases to lean the wrong way. I would like to know more! Thank you!
Hi Irina, thanks for the video! After watching some of your shorts last year, I knit a swatch and it definitely felt more comfortable for me. I still want to work on keeping everything close to the tips of the needles to avoid poking my finger. Would knitting in the round be like knitting garter?
Irina, I really enjoyed this video. This is the way my Lithuanian grandmother knit and I could never understand the different orientation of the stitches after my mother taught me English knitting, and that is what I stuck with. Yes and yes to more videos, please. I love learning this technique and plan to use it when making baby blankets for now while I am learning. Question: if you are just knitting in the round, you won't have to worry about reorienting the stitches, is that right? Thanks again and happy New Year! Maria M.
My friends wonder how I can knit so quickly! Continental combination! Nothing is faster for me. K2tog and ssk is the opposite for me. Otherwise the most ergonomic for sure.

Often I switch back and forth for ergonomic reasons. For twisted rib, I resorted to Norwegian purl because Continental purl causes pain. How would I work twisted rib using combination knitting?
You would knit and purl through the left leg of the stitch in order to twist it. I’ll film another tutorial for ribbing and twisted ribbing
@@FiberchatsThank you, Irina 😊
I’m posting decreases video tomorrow. I’ll continue filming tutorials if there is interest.
Thank you, Irina. I would love to see how you knit fully using this method. @@Fiberchats
This was a great video! Thank you so much. Could you do a video on increases and decreases? I knit this way and there is not a lot of information out there. Would you consider doing a series on this way if knitting?
Yes, that’s my plan for January. Increases are next
@@Fiberchats Thank you so much!
Absolutely! Thank you for this suggestion
I started knitting about a month ago, English style, and decided to try continental after seeing some videos about it. Ive struggled all week to get comfortable with purling, it was incredibly frustrating- until I stumbled across your video! I can’t believe how much easier this is! Do I need to cast on differently for this?
no, you just cast on regurlarly
How do you cast on to get an Easter mount on the first row? This style feels so much better on my hands
You cast on regularly and knit first row like in classic continental style
Well I didnt know it had a name😊. I akways knit that way until the last year, then I switched to the 'regular' purl because I didnt want to cause decreases and or increases to lean the wrong way. I would like to know more! Thank you!
On Thursday I’ll post a video about decreases
Hi Irina, thanks for the video! After watching some of your shorts last year, I knit a swatch and it definitely felt more comfortable for me. I still want to work on keeping everything close to the tips of the needles to avoid poking my finger. Would knitting in the round be like knitting garter?
Yes, unless you knit lace in the round or ribbing. For plain stockinette the stitch orientation doesn’t change
@@Fiberchats oh, sounds like I would need to practice with a swatch. Thanks.
Maria M.
Correct. If you knit in the round, the orientation of stitches won’t change. But I will record a video about ribbing in the round
@@Fiberchats That would be awesome. Sounds like we are getting a full class RUclips tutorial. You are so gracious with your time. Many thanks. ❤️

My friends wonder how I can knit so quickly! Continental combination! Nothing is faster for me. K2tog and ssk is the opposite for me. Otherwise the most ergonomic for sure.
I agree, minimal effort
