Again, thank you for making these most useful videos demonstrating the Continental Combination Style of knitting. I, too, would love to see how you work cable stitches (with and/or without a cable needle.) I love this method of knitting, as I am holding my needles in my hands in the same manner as you do. I tried learning Continental with my index finger pointing up, but for the life of me, I could not get it to work. Holding my fingers close to the needles seems more natural to me. I am grateful for your time and effort in showing us an alternative way to achieve beautiful stitches and fabric.
Thank you for making these videos to de-mystify Combination knitting. It would be useful to refer to your playlist when I plan to cast on a dedicated project to learn this style. It must be so much better on your hands the way you knit with minimal movement.
Thanks for these videos regarding combination Continental knitting. The western mount and eastern mount always referred to horses for me. I’ve been knitting for years, and just learned they apply to knitting. This will be upping my knit game!
I have watched so many tutorials for flat and in the round. You explain how and why the best!!❤ plus you show both flat and in the round. I have followed this for my cardigan. Works like a dream. 🎉❤
Thank you for a clear instructional video on continental combination style knitting. I have been practicing this method as I am an english style knitter and like to switch between that style and continental knitting. I have struggled with continental purl so my go to would be english purl or norwegian purl. I have been practicing combination style and my latest project is have been purling the stitch through the front loop instead of the back (I'm working in the round) -- so I guess it's twisted rib :D -- I'm going to attempt purling through the back loop when I next do this so my stitches are not twisted. So happy to have found your space on youtube :)
WOW! I think this stitch orientation/mounting explains what is happening with a supposedly garter stitch hat I'm working on in the round. I have been knitting only without purling and the hat is garter stitches on one side and purl stitches on the other. 🙃 I have recently re-trained myself to use continental knitting - I originally learned to knit in the English style. I am using circular needles and need a demo of how to connect for knitting in the round. I just used the regular long-tail cast on and did a fiddly connection to connect for the round because I was struggling with the cable being too long. I am sure it will be corrected once you show the magic loop technique. Can you please share the magic loop technique and how to join in the round smoothly? Thank you, Irina. ❤
Excellent ! That makes sense based on how I orginally learned what I thought was continental knitting , but it was even more different (because it doesn't work in the round)...so, I learned from a Lithuanian woman who taught me to knit through the back loop and purl from below, as you do...then on the next row the knit stitches were twisted but purling from below, as you do, would untwist or correct that...as I understand it, this method only applies to flat knitting in stockinette or in a rib pattern. EEKS...clear as mud, right!? but knitting that way felt effortless and produced even machine-like results...so I will adopt this combination style for knitting in the round... THANKS ❣
Hi! I am trying to learn this style of knitting and purling because it will be faster and minimize my hand motions(and it looks easier once you learn how to do it). The pattern I am using calls for knit 2, purl 2, for 2 rows and then purl 2 knit 2, for 2 rows. The first row I can continental knit the regular way and the purl the stitches with the downward stitches (like you did, correct?). I am confused about how I do the next rows? Do I knit through the back loop and purl through the front like you did here(because the 1st 2 rows are like doing ribbing)? In the third row I am knitting the purl stitches and purling the knit stitches. So would I repeat the first row method? Then for the 4th row ,knit in the back loop and purl downward again? Thank you so much for your help! Sincerely, Tamara
You always knit and purl through the leg of the stitch that’s closest to your right hand needle, so if the stitch is mounted western style, then you knit though the front and if it’s mounted eastern style, then through the back.
I love your tuto they are so professional and clear, Thanks ! Your gey yarn has great nuances. Yes, I'd like to see how you connect your stitches in the round, anything special ? No success yet in holding my yarn in the left hand, my tension is much too loose and irregular. 🥲
Game changer in my knitting technique! Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for this series of videos. I have learnt so much!
You are so welcome!
Ah, that‘s why it’s called combination. Always wondered about that, thanks for explaining!
No problem!
Thanks Irina ❤
Yes, I’m interested in the things you mention. Also twisted ribbing both flat and in the round.

Everyone has different way to tension the yarn, but this is what I find least stressful for my hands
Thank you! 😃

Thank you Irina. It seems that the key is checking how stitches are mounted.
Yes, it is!

Yay! Thank you! I’m glad it was helpful!
Very helpful demo. I love your pacing and it is easy to see how you manipulate the yarn. Definitely a game-changer for me to practice.
Glad you liked it
Can't wait to try out on my next project. Many thanks.
Wonderful!

Thank you for your videos. They are very helpful. Could you do a video that shows make one right and left in this way of knitting? Thanks!
BTWs, I’d appreciate learning more. I never know what I don’t know, so I eat up these kinds of videos!

It’s hard to explain, but in reality you just always knit and purl through the right leg of the stitch and it’s very intuitive
Thank you for clarifying its simplicity, Irina...love your channel :) @@Fiberchats

@@Fiberchats Thank you, I will give that a try (on a practice piece) and see if I can keep it from being twisted!

It’s less about looseness and more about consistency. Continental will be a bit looser
