  • The hike from Dante's View to Mount Perry in Death Valley National Park offers an exceptional experience for those seeking a challenging yet rewarding trek. This moderately difficult trail spans approximately 8.4 miles round trip, with an elevation gain of about 1,100 feet. The path is well-defined and traverses through some of the most scenic landscapes in Death Valley. Along the way, hikers are treated to panoramic views of the park, including the Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America. The trail is relatively exposed, providing little shade, so it's crucial to carry plenty of water and sun protection. The best times to hike are in the cooler months, as summer temperatures in the valley can be extreme. Reaching Mount Perry's summit offers a sense of accomplishment and breathtaking views that make the effort worthwhile. Remember, while the hike is accessible to those with a good level of fitness, it's important to be prepared and aware of the challenging desert conditions.

In this video I take you on an extraordinary hike in Death Valley National Park, exploring a seldom-seen phenomenon-a temporary lake at Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America. This rare event, a result of significant rainfall from Hurricane Hillary in 2023, offers a unique glimpse into a landscape that occasionally mirrors its ancient past as a vast Ice Age lake.
Starting from Dante's View, a spectacular viewpoint and the trailhead for our hike, we embark on a 9-mile round trip along Dante's Ridge to Mount Perry. This moderate hike features an elevation gain of about 2,100 feet, traversing breathtaking ridgelines with panoramic views of the surrounding desert. The trail, marked by intermittent white blazes, winds through a landscape steeped in geological history and cinematic fame-having even appeared in Star Wars as the overlook to Mos Eisley.
As we trek towards Mount Perry, the path takes us through varied terrain, including some challenging scrambles and steep sections, making for an engaging and rewarding hiking experience. The trail provides stunning views of the re-formed Lake Manley basin below, evoking a sense of walking through history. At the summit of Mount Perry, on clear days, you can see from Mount Whitney-the highest point in the contiguous United States-to the glistening remnants of the lake at Badwater Basin.
This hike not only challenges the body but also offers a profound connection to the dramatic and ever-changing landscapes of Death Valley. It is a reminder of nature’s power to transform and surprise, providing a rare opportunity to witness a temporary lake that harks back to the region's prehistoric conditions. For anyone passionate about hiking, geology, or the stark beauty of desert landscapes, this hike to Mount Perry via Dante's Ridge is a must-do, a true gem in the rugged expanse of Southern California.

Thanks for the recommendation. I went on the hike but didn't go all the way. I know my limits. Still an excellent hike.

It's amazing how the lowest points (Death Valley) and the highest point (Mount Whitney) are so close. Looks like a good choice of a hike to do at this time of the year and with the weather related events we have experienced.

This video inspired me to do the hike. I had to juggle my schedule, drive 6 hours to get there, and deal with strong winds that felt like they wanted to blow me off the mountain. Wowza, was it worth it! I appreciate all the details in your video that made planning so much easier.

Great job! The driving and logistics look as difficult as the hike on this one. I guess that's often the case in these remote areas. Like me I'm sure you have summited all the peaks you pointed out around you (White, Telescope and Whitney). If you have not done Baxter Pass yet that was my greatest challenge and would love to see your video take on it. I have one up on YT called Baxter Pass 2018 but it is just a narrated slide show and not a nice video like yours.
