In this video we upgrade some of our boats insulation with some 1/2 inch foam puzzle piece floor mats. It turns out these foam mats are very easy to work with and they much look better than having reflectix insulation on the side of the v-berth. The reflectix definitely helped with our moisture problem, but we still got a bit of condensation. On top of that...it wasn't the prettiest to look at. Sorta felt like sleeping in side of a chip bag...So we replaced it with some new foam that we think looks and feels a million times better!
Moisture is still public-enemy number one on the sailboat. Thanks a lot to our neighbours who have continued to provide advice regarding this challenge. Nowadays it rarely causes us very much grief!
Thanks so much for watching.

Dollar store sells cheap dehumidifier packs. Really helps us when we winter camping in our truck camper..They would be perfect for your boat.
Cool we will look for those!
It’ll help a ton if you get a dehumidifier. I live on a Catalina 30 in San Francisco Bay and the dehumidifier is a silver bullet. It also circulates the warm air from the heater.
Hi guys, love your videos. I saw your idea for your condensation problem and it looks great. If that solution does not work, there is a product called Armor Flex and it comes in various width, 15mm, 17mm, 19mm etc and is a great product for avoiding condensation. Hope it might work for you guys.
This video is great. You may have changed my mind from fitted carpet to now I am thinking of doing the same with the squares. Do you finish the whole floor?
We thought about doing the whole floor, but decided to leave it for the time being. But who knows, we may do the rest of it some day!
So, I can’t find a lot of information and I’ve asked around a bit. Are you ever scared when sailing in terms of crime? Like if you were to go country to country? What kind of self defense items if any would you take or do you have? I know some things are illegal in certain areas etc. I know random question
Here's a thought for you

Not only will it keep boat nice and warm
But it dries the air out plus the ambiance

Great work, I love the way that you use the most basic of items "unexpensive" to be comfortable. Looking forward to your next vid. Cheers John from OZ
Great ingenuity, I love your relaxed demeanor, is that being Canadian or great parents? thanks again
Ran Sailing put clear bubble wrap on the outside of their boat over all their hatches. They said it really helped with the condensation. And it still lets light in!
I used the reflective type on my last boat. It worked very well
You are beautiful and talented so nice to see these days !
Lol, it needed to be done, right. It really was an eye opening episode. Have fun J+G
Agreed
Why not use some of that foam or the reflectics that you have spare to line the back of your timber entrance door panels to cut out the drafts in the winter, you can always take it down in the summer. Also use the reflectics to line hard to get to areas like in cupboards on the external fibreglass and this will also help with insulation and it wont take up much room. One word of advice though, I have worked with insulation in houses here in the UK called alrefex 2L2 which is reflectics by a differant name and it is extremely non flammable, it would be an idea to check what the flammability is of the foam floor tiles that you have used is and also it would be an idea just to check that your boats insurance doesn't need updating with any of the modifications you make as you do them. It should be fine but worth checking.
Thank you, that is a great idea and we will be sure to look into the flammability :)
If all of your problems can be solved by floor mats you are extremely lucky. Count your blessings.
Excellent work. It’s a perfect use for that foam. Glad to see you’re adapting well to boat life
trying to watch this video but can't see past those eyes
A bit of double sided tape is good for holding it in place (and fairly easy to remove/clean up if needs to be removed) Also used velcro tape to attach pieces to windows, particularly the hatches which can be removed during the day. By the way begining to look like a boat!
Thanks for the tips! Haha thank you :D
You could use silicon as an adhesive, as it will stick but is easy to remove in the future.
Great job! This was a really interesting watch, thanks for sharing
Lol I live on a boat in Campbell river
You are being creative. Hopefully the puzzle pieces will work. Keep up the good work.
Hey I have Catalina called Blue Moon moored at oakbay mine is 1986.
Wow haha that is so cool! :D
Looking good, your boat looked awesome too, being a little darker should make it easier to sleep. If the first try doesn't work try something else, way to go. I would have to assume that those who cruise it warmer climates wouldn't have that condensation problem,so you could have headed south lol. Gillian, I don't think you are the first to over estimate what you need for a project, and better to have a bit to much than not enough. Take care of each other and be safe.
Purchasing your own pressure washer would probably be a good investment.
If you have a Harbor freight store electrical power washer 1700 psi come on sale spring and summer for $80USD.
Sailing Uma used the same insulation for their boat. I think they used some kind of 3m spray adhesive to fasten to the Hull. So you could put more in back of the hanging locker or other clothes storage areas too.
Actually Dan & Kika used brush-on contact cement.
@@TheOlandex ok, thanks! I guess it’s been a while since I watched that video. I think Sailing life used sleeping bag pads but the material looked to be the same and maybe he used a spray adhesive.
You did a great job with the floor! I was wishing you had contacted me for some tips. There is a trick to make that sooo much easier where you lay one 'tile' down over the last one you just laid and use another to mark it... I would explain it here but it's too late now!
In the v birth you could use those Command hangers to hang things on walls without any screws or nails
Great idea! I didn't think of those
Not to be a bummer, but when underway there may be some flexing so all those well-sized joints could be a curse. (sorry!!). Just to say it might be necessary to allow for some movement of the boat.
Flexibility is good. The supple willow does not contend against the storm, yet it survives.
Velcro strips ?
Looking great
Hey Blue Moon, you really got the hang of this RUclips thing! Can't wait to see the next part, it's very instructive and your can-do attitude makes everything enjoyable. Greetings from Montreal!
Can you do the roof as well to make it more cozy?
Nice! You did an amazing job.
Hi J+G, just stumbled across your channel and subscribed. Looking forward to following your adventures. As a tip as you learn your craft, keep your eyes on the camera lens and resist looking at yourself on the screen. It’s distracting to the viewer and to your story. Looking forward to your next video. Also, try keeping your videos to between 18-25 min and focus on highest quality content. Editing is the toughest job for RUclipsrs. Less is more to get your subscribers up. 👍
Thank you! Thank you for that advice, I hadn't realized we were looking away from the lens, but now that is all I see! We are going to work on not getting distracted with the view finder :)
When it gets hot it may expand and buckle . You may have to trim edges for expansion

Ack!
November, 2022.
We experimented with something similar in our ExpeditionVehicle.
Fluids accumulated under them, lots and lots of fluids.
Going into a couple weeks, we noticed a wet musty stink, along with 'squishy' sounds as we moved around inside the rig.
We lifted one corner of the pads... and saw puddles of darkish oozing drips.

Twenty inter-lock pads.
Lightly used.
Significant 'abandoned fridge in meth-house' odor, but that could *probably* dissipate in a few decades.
Scrub-resistant bleach-resistant stains on the under-side from who-knows-what.
Best offer...
3M double sided tape or Velcro that's how I attach almost everything to fibreglass.
Good to know, thanks!
There are a world if double sided tapes besides 3M
The single largest use; f Reflectix is to KEEP COLD IN refrigerated good shipping cartons. IF it's to be used as ' insulation, as stated on the Reflectix website - alone it's R1. 7 at best. To be properly used it should be incorporated WITH fiberglass insulation batts AND a 3/4" air space in-between the two.
You obviously didn't go to school just to eat your lunch. A+ on the floor. Fair winds from Ontario...mac

Walls are rarely square.
We noticed you verifying your dimensions near both ends... nice work!

Semi-retired welder-fabricator here.
I constantly fabricate cardboard mock-ups to verify fit and interference prior to cutting expensive material.
I caught that interview last week when it came out (Wednesday?). Congratulations! I have an '86 V30, have considered some insulation but down here in the South, it doesn't stay cold long enough...but it would cut down on the condensation while I'm away. Thank you for another fun video, cheers!
I just purchased a 1995 Catalina 36 this fall. My V-berth is often damp, even when we were not staying on the boat. It baffles me. I initially thought it was a leaky hatch, but the moisture continued after I re-sealed the hatch. Sounds like you guys solved the issue? Did you guys determine that the moisture is mostly the result of condensation? Did the insulation stop the condensation? I also saw that you also had something like "HyperVent" or rug-like layer under the mattress? Any suggestions are appreciated! thanks
If your boat is like mine, the v-berth wall is a liner installed over the actual fiberglass hull. As your boat has a dark hull like mine, the hull gets very hot under the sun. I used the reflectix material in between the hull and the liner to cut on heat due to the sun rays. The aluminum material does reflect infrared sun rays. The cabin is cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Your new foam material is really a good idea to insulate the interior of the boat. Cheers
Exactly! I think we might just see another video in the summer of the Reflectix going back into the V-berth behind the foam panels. (where it would do the most good)
Interesting, thank you!
What about fire? I mean it is obviously not fire-resistant, but would it catch fire easily?
🇨🇦 well done with the floor mats AND the boat looks like a million bucks since you used the pressure washer !!!
I suggest you place insulation on fiberglass above the waterline. Let the glass below the waterline condense and drain to bilge and pump overboard via pump. Take a look at Sailrite for insulation options.
Just curious if condensation forms on the cold surface...under the foam...and causes mold? Best of luck.
We have been keeping an eye on it and nothing yet!
Hi I don't know if you know sailuma they did the same to there boat sometime ago have a look your self Brendan IRL
What to do with the v-berth, glue it so it stays dry..or not glue it so you can observe behind
Kind of a Catch-22.
Great job all around, does the foam pad make it seem warmer in the Vberth? Really nice after the pressure washing as well. Any chance of a link to the article of the the 2 of you or is 1 not available? (was curious to read what they wrote)
Aquí en el Mediterráneo, utilizamos corcho de 5 milímetros simple o doble
That's what I'm talking about. So, you have seen "Sailing Uma"s" renovation video. Great! Keep up the good work.
Gillian, good job figuring out the floor mat geometry. It turned out to be a 2 person job between you and that voice in your head you kept talking too. It was great to watch. Keep up the good work!
Nice job!
You could probably use latex caulk, which would come off easily.
What is the name of the insulation matting and wher did you get it please? Oh how much is it please?
Nice job with the insulation. Good attention to detail at the corners. Stay strong, safe and together.
Hey I noticed your location shows Vancouver Island. We have friends in Victoria Bc. They also have a sailboat.
Just use dabs of silicone. You can clean that up if needed...mac
Good job 👏 and I can see improvement in your video editing and filming too
Try to seal the boom cover with something like this: www.ultramarxl.com/en/
awesome job kid's.
Thanks Steve!
Good idea girl that foam on the floor and walls o_~
♥
Great work with the foam! we used the same stuff on our boat. not bad stuff. They even have a version that looks like wood, sorta.
Next mission: Put the rest of the foam on the ceiling. Helps insulating the V-berth from cold and heat 😉
I feel like I learned something...I think.😎
Excellent foam work, it does look very nice, cosy and warm. Loved the video.
try double face carpet tape om the wall, just in case.
Sorry, but you are making a big mistake putting the mat under the foam. A matress needs to be ventilated from underneeth because the moisture from youre Bodys goes throu the matress and needs to dry from underneeth and can not go throu the foam. That will create mould.
Sorry for my bad english, i am from germany.
Lots of love!
Absolutely not! I have put insulation underneath berths on several boats. Stops all condensation and makes your berth warmer.
Tony
@@tmog1000 yes, but the white mat needs to be between the matress and the insulation
@@ruedigerrekate4906 Well. That's not been my experience
For future reference, cardboard makes a great template.

Are you wearing your eye protection?
maybe my internet (?) but the video and audio is out of sync?
Im a Vic liveaboard as well. Subbed
you need to seal those joints keep the dust and grime out
Hi Guys
That foam is great, I have used it a number of times , but I live in Ireland, and the temperatures really reach more than 15 degrees centigrade. However , if we get direct sunlight, and the foam heats up to say 18 to 20 degrees, the foam will expand, and lift away from the surface, you may have to stick it to the hull
Regards Christy
Hi Christy, good to know! We'll keep an eye on it as the temperature starts to warm up :D Thanks!!
A kitchen on a boat is called a galley.
If you want to try double sided tape, but want to avoid residue, a trick is to super glue blue painters tape back to back.
Painters tape peels off without residue
Great idea!! Thanks :D
See, I told you that the neoprene foam would do it!
That was a very cool video to watch!
The pressure washer cleaning, the foam that fits perfectly...i could almost feel the warmth beneath your feet as soon as you put it on the floor.
Very satisfying. Good job guys! Greetings from Bordeaux - France.
Nice to hear from you, thanks so much!!
Dear guys, insulation on a boat is al about creating a dry layer on the inside and between that and the outside layer a conduit for condensation to drip to your bilge. Condensation will always happen as your cabin (thank God) will be warmer than the outside, so it is essental to create those layers and a way for the condensation to seep to somewhere you can clean/dry up. Insulation of one centimeter will not keep out the cold, i.c. the condensation. It will help in moderate climates. We had 20 Celsius frost this winter on our boat and no condensation problems from the walls/floor with the above system.
Thanks for the advice! :D
Great video 👍
Nice job! Guess with all that leftover insulation you simply have to buy a bigger boat! :-)
Haha there's a thought! :D
What is a great idea I am so going to do this in my boat
Good job.
Nice work!
I would keep your eye on the sail cover pressure washing may have rendered it no longer water proof
Thanks for the tip!
Very nice. I use those mats everywhere, they are very useful. Check behind them regularly for mold where they are against the hull. Please look at the camera lens, not at the monitor when you are talking to us. Keep smiling, keep learning. You will improve in everything you do. Then when you look back at what you did and what you said... you will laugh.
We will be sure to check under the mats, luckily we have not had any problems yet :) Yes, I had no idea we weren't looking into the lens.... but now that's all I can see! We will practice :)
If you use a little silicone caulk it will 'glue' it to the surface but it will also be fairly easy to remove
Great idea, thanks!
Great idea, take care you two.
sailing uma! boooom good call!
Sailors are a wealth of information (esp. Dave). Keep up what you're doing you two~ insulation looks great.
Thanks so much :D you are very right...Dave has been a major help!! ;)
A clean boat is a happy boat.
Very clever🙂
if your sail cover is sunbrella, you should not pressure wash it; you will need to re-waterproof it
Thanks Bruce! We have hear this a couple times now and we will look into that! At least it's lookin a little better... :D
So... glad some of us turned you on to this idea. Seems like it will work well for you.
If I may, I'd just say you shouldn't be shy about giving a nod to the sources of inspiration. I think Sailing Uma was a really good inspiration for this project, and well they should be. They blazed the trail you're now following.
Keep up the projects guys - you're getting there!
How about instead of requesting pats on the back, how about thanking the inventor of this product because this is exactly what they designed it for. You didn't create the idea or the product Kev. The inventor did. Because you used it in a boat, doesn't make it yours, lol!
@@loadedhog1135 Actually why not try to keep up. I, along with a few other viewers, turned them on to the Sailing Uma video where they addressed the exact problem Jonah & Gillian were trying to deal with. I neither took, nor asked for any credit at all. Rather I suggested a nod be given to the people who had this idea and put it out there before. That's Dan & Kika. They are very brilliant sailors who started out without knowing much and learned as they went. They are literally the trail blazers for channels like Blue Moon. Further, this is not at all what the product is designed for, it just happens to be one good use for it. Its original design is for creating a cushioned floor area for things like kids playing or for standing on cement floors. It's not a marine product, its found in places like Home Depot.
So... yeah thanks for your criticism, but maybe try to understand the topic a bit before weighing in? Just a thought.
Nice job guys, might try that on the floor of my Rival 32. Just subscribed. Andy UK
Please tell us how durable those floor Matt’s are in a year or two. I have a few spots they would work good.
Absolutely!
Brick cleaner (hydrochloric acid) will get any stubborn marks off the gel coat, but use sparingly and rinse well whilst taking lots of obvious care.
She looks so much better fit that wash down, well done. I'm interested in seeing any sailing in the future too.
Much love from Cornwall, UK
Use your leftover foam to protect your anchor locker from chan chafe and also used it in your cockpit storage lockers to protect the inside and help reduce rattles and other noise. It'll pan out when you guys start sailing more or moving the boat around. Good luck and happy the foam tiles worked out.
Great idea! thank you :D
@@BlueMoonLife You're welcome.
This sort of reminds me of beauty and the beast lol
Haha who is the beast ;) jk...thanks for the comments David!
