Nice work, Max. I bet The Australian Armour & Artillery Museum was well pleased with that job.👍👏⚒️🏴 I'm editing this comment because I was premature since I had not seen the photos at the end of this video. That will teach me not to wait. 🫣 I originally thought those were bearings from a Tanks turret or possibly a mobile Anti Aircraft battery. Then you gave us a clue when you said about getting someone PDQ from behind. Definitely Tank connected, I thought. Turning a turret quickly behind you is plausible, but not so easily done with, say, a 2 pounder Anti Tank Gun when hitched to a vehicle or the type that has stabilising legs that splay out. If im not mistaken, that gun looks more like a 2 pounder Anti Tank gun. No matter what, great gun, great job, well done Max.👍⚒️🏴
Gday Max, that wasn’t a tricky repair that could of gone pair shaped quite easily, I certainly wouldn’t have the confidence to have a go at this mate, brilliant result and an interesting tractor 🚜, cheers
I thought you would have a hard time with welding one side of the part to warping and shrinkage you proved me wrong good on you, great video. Cheers from Western Canada
A very detailed explanation of different welding techniques, very interesting, a great result too, also at the end, I see the problem of what to say that these parts go on, so Tractor it is then!..
you always go for the extra mile max, i like it how you explain everthing without making it boring and endless talking, good content as always. cheers ben.
Impressive set of weapons at your disposal Max, good appraisal on method selection ref item value and end use 👌. Good demonstration and end result 👏. Thanks for sharing
Well done Max, Thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks for detailing the welding option pros and cons. Having that extra test part sure paid off. Your tractor buddy sure found the right guy 👍 Cheers.....ATB....
Nice pragmatic solution Max. Hopefully this assembly will see a lot less shock load than it was originally designed for. Nice smooth azimuth and elevation adjustment on the, er......tractor.
HI Max, from Washington State, US. First, the weldment lesson as to choice was very interesting as "heat to part" decision. And, I took particular note of your tool selection. As a rounded fixture as well as general speed of headstock. *The choice to boring bar and general toolpost to work set up. Happy to see your new shop in modest job flow. Really, really enjoying your comments and review to all types of repair and while my shop is now a bit cold as winter just has first snow, I hope to manage best results. Regards. McGary
Good to see the explanation of the welding choices and how it turned out under testing. The workshop is looking awesome! Producing very good content as always, the lighting has improved so much, your content is always enjoyable and educational. cheers
Another really nice job completed there Max, always amazes me how the welding cleans up to a decent part. I used to use those hand held thread chasers quite a bit 40 years ago when I was still an engineer at sea. I have been looking for some recently for the retirement workshop, but they are like finding unicorn horns now in the UK.
Thanks . You can cheat with the chasers & weld old Coventry die head chasers onto a flat shank with a handle . I can not ever remember seeing them for sale , these were Dads & are very old . 👍
Sometimes when doing these sort of repair i am not sure if it is just as quick to make complete new part. I found welding some farm machinery back up i could machine new part quicker than welding waiting for it too cool then machining finding out not quite enough weld and a low spot plus considered it to last longer machining new bit. Max still nice repair and good blending thanks for the content
spot on with the telescope gauge method Max. I always take several measurements when using them to be sure. I found a smoother surface finish will lend to better measurements that don't hang up when you rock them trough. However perfectly smooth is not always attainable especially when field machining on repair work. Nicely done Max and a cool tractor to boot! cheers
G'day Max. Definitely a good array of welding options. I think the Mig is the best options overall. The first unit has turned out really well. Great video, catch you on the merry go round
The MG possibly rusted out in the tropics. Took an M16 to the local gun range, interestingly made by General Motors from the late sixties and branded Hydra Matic. Possibly surplus from the tropics.
Eastwood co. Sells heat sink for welding. Don’t know if this would work for you applications but I though I would let you know about them. Good hunting to you my friend.
Max if you want to reinstate that copper finish, it is really easy. I have a video: Shop Made Machinist's Layout Fluid - Coppering Solution - Machinery's Handbook 15th edition 1956
I have all of these crazy alloy rods for my TIG and same for the MIG. I recently used up an 11 pound spool of standard 70 rate steel wire and put a 309L spool in. So, as you know, it’s used for stainless to low alloy steel. But it works very well on steel to steel, or building up surfaces. I’ve never tried 308L for that, just for stainless. Which are you using? Some hardface alloys are also good and don’t require hardening. I like those too. Just not the ones with carbide as you then have to grind them. I recently bought a small welding rotator. It makes a really big improvement over my trying to turn around the part. Much less concentration.
ER316L was all i had in stainless . A welding rotator is on my list ! There are some pretty exotic welding rods & wires out there , all really expensive & have to be ordered in . Sometimes you just have to keep in focus what the job is going to be used for ! Cheers 👍
Is the JFMT lathe up & running yet? 🤷♂️ My RUclips feed was just showing me some of your old vids & it was 3 years ago you posted the video about acquiring the JFMT. 😜😂 I guess you have been pretty busy building the new workshop in that period tho. 😉 Be nice to see it all done & back up & running. 👍😉

Copper plating is normal when case hardening specific area's (at least on motorcycle connecting rods for pressed up cranks where needle bearings run directly inside big end) I've had some major issues when cast steel track rollers (on excavators) were welded up, almost impossible to machine although I'm pretty sure there were less grades of carbide available 'to the masses' in 1990?
Thanks . That is interesting about the copper . It was a thick coating as well . Lol , those rollers are that cheap now days they just run them to destruction , about 120 % ! It used to be quite a business for one place here , auto welding them . 👍
Max, been meaning to ask, How is the solar panels and system working out in the shop? Be awesome to have a up date on it sometime in the future. Many Thanks from kiwi land.
Gday max, would you reckon machining away about maybe half of that and then shrink fitting or even locktiteing a ring then remachining the crown in would be a viable repair? Or be too thin?
@@swanvalleymachineshop I was viewing on a 1080p screen. I illustrate the problem in this unlisted video: ruclips.net/video/5o1XtxkcuXE/видео.html . Sadly I don't know the reason, or even if it is at my end or yours (except I'm not having it with anyone else's videos). Thanks for all your videos.

i would turn them until round and make a press fit sleeve. Locktite it on, and turn the profile
