  • Should I sell all my reef tanks?! This is seriously the most bubble algae I've ever seen.
    Yes, this video is kind of embarrassing...but we all have highs and lows in the reefing hobby. I figured I'd be as transparent as possible with where I'm at right now. Should I start fresh? Let me know in the comments below!

    I had a similar amount of bubble algae take over my cube. Valonia really punishes ignoring it. It's a massive pain because it gets in everything. I appreciate that you're airing your dirty laundry - nothing to be embarrassed about- we've all let things go in life and this might be valuable for someone in a similar situation.

    Let it get to this point is just a disrespect with the life inside the tank. If we cant take care of our animals, we should not get them, the impression is that you just let it get to this point to create content.

    • @BahamaLlamaCoral
      @BahamaLlamaCoral  2 года назад

      I will disagree with that to some degree. Did life get crazy due to family/job and other outside distractions - yep - and I am taking steps to remedy that now. To say that I intentionally let it get to this point for "content" couldn't be further from the truth. Anyone who has watched this channel should know that. I am transparent, open and honest. Also, just because algae is unsightly to us humans doesn't mean the tank is "unhealthy," it's very much a part of the natural ecosystem and is present in the ocean.

    I recently just set up another system also and you know what idk if I’m making things up in my head or not but all I can say is back in the day 10-13 years ago when I got into the hobby it was still at that point where you go and pick out live rock and my local stores in Philadelphia pa where I grew up used to carry Tonga Fiji Caribbean Florida sometimes Haiti I mean I really can’t even remember them all but it was a beautiful thing lol! I NEVER used to get dinoflagellates and even cyano like I do sometimes these days! Some of the issues I faced within these past few years in regards to reef keeping have been extremely difficult to overcome and I’ve been doing this for a decent amount of time now so of course I was a little cocky feeling like I’ve seen it all !!! NAAAAAAHHHH NOT EVEN CLOSE BUD! But honestly starting out sterile systems like we do now has really made stage cycle process long and hard. I don’t literally mean the point ammonia drops and nitrates rise specifically but instead I’m basically saying the first year that a system is up and running can be absolute hell! Very different from back in the day. Don’t get me wrong I can totally find it in myself to appreciate the fact that we are no longer pulling endless amounts of live rock from our true wild reefs because at the end up the day maintaining those are the priority in my eyes and to many others….. but geez man lacking that variety of wild bacteria along with all of those beautiful hitchhikers you’d find in the tank has really changed the game and it’s made new systems very susceptible to bacterial issues and algae which has always been an issue can be difficult still but I find the topic of bacteria is the one we really need to understand in a much deeper way than we do as a whole. Hopefully these larger companies with deeper pockets that have been investing in science studies regarding bacteria and understanding the strains and how many strains people typically keep in their home aquariums can get us to a point where these bacteria products have a larger more diverse blend of bacteria so that we don’t have to stay at war with the bad bacteria as often as most of us have been because I know I’ve had some tough battles. I now am at a point of just running multiple ultraviolet sterilization bulbs on all 4 systems which I’d imagine probably is not the best thing for keeping some of the essential water Bourne bacteria strains. It works for now tho I feel that’s probably doing some harm as well but I know I’m definitely not even close to being the only reef keeper that just said forget it I’m never turning this off lol. I now breed my own pods and culture multiple strains of phytoplankton as well to help balance out things in that aspect because I’m not 100% sure but I’d say running a sterilizer the way that I do can damage pod populations but that’s just an assumption. Maybe when pods go through depending on contact time it doesn’t actually kill them but rather they then become sterile and cannot breed afterwards?? Just another guess.

What happened? 3 saltwater adapted mollies and 5 margarite snails happened. The mollies eat algae constantly while the snails clean the glass. I am now concerned that my snails will have nothing to eat now that all the algae is gone. The mollies will eat anything I feed them although I will put seaweed in on a clip so they can still get their veggie fix. By the way the total cost of this algae cure was $36 for 3 mollies and $5 for the 5 margarites, total $41.

    Hello Remy, I'm new to your site, I'm relieved to learn that your wife has had a successful operation and is making a good recovery VB W x I don't own a marine aquarium (yet) but aim to in a wee while.I follow your friend Reef Dork, as I'm also based in the U.K. and as you know there is certainly a G.B. 'slant' to his fine work. I wish you every success in your hobby/pastime/other life. VBW x

    Turn rocks upside down. Drown out light. Add more emerald crabs then recommended. Tangs are also known to eat valonia so if your tank is big enough maybe go that route

    Man I feel your pain, currently going through the worst outbreak of cyano that i just can't seem to shake. Going to tear it down and transfer everything over to a new and improved tank. Do what you think is best, the reefing hobby will always be waiting for you no matter what

      people need to chill about things like cyano,they are pretty seasonal and cause no real harm,they will naturally deplete/balance.fighting it with various things is often the start of a slide.

      @@darcidavies9006 have to get it out,not blow it off :) corals are hardier than folk think tho. ive had coral brown for months but freshen up again when balance hits. i totally do understand the frustration tho. cyano is 90% of time a 'deadspot' issue I think. If you start again,you need to really have an idea of why it happened, else its likely to follow the same route without a change somewhere :)

    Oh god just finally got my nano cleaned off of cyano, hair, and bubble algae the last 2ish months ago! The hair algae was the worst one of all I’d have anything else than hair I swear! The last phase before everything disappeared since was the red cyano which was easy to clean off the sand and rocks. For the hair I got a turbo snail to take care of them! And he’s doing amazing since love these guys
