This truck build has been pushing my outside of my comfort zone from the very beginning but I love this stuff and I'm very excited to get on to mounting the engine. I am nervous because this has a lot riding on it, but none the less i'm stoked!!!

Trent, what you do is not boring. It is very informative and I like how you talk to people so they seem on a level surface.
Building a rock crawler is like building a home, it’s the little details done right in the beginning that make a huge difference later. Take your time and we’ll follow along.
You have a unique aspect to your building process that has to be extremely helpful. It is something that Tom Silva, Richard Trethewey, and Norm Abrams of This Old House have mentioned. Because you are building to an audience you have to explain what your plan is and then do your work knowing that there are experts watching your every move. Explaining your plan in detail is something that can only help you to be more confident in what you are doing. I don’t have to do this and make mistakes because I don’t have to explain my every step to an audience that will scrutinize my efforts. You have gotten so good at telling your audience what you are doing from Trent & Allie, which I call This New House, and you are Tom Silva (my favorite master craftsman).
Trent, this is what your channel is supposed to be! It’s refreshing hearing you second guessing yourself as we all do but very informative at the same time! Love this channel!
Trent, your videos are always informative and not boring. you let us know what you are doing every step of the way and that makes it so much more interesting than just watching someone welding without knowing what they are trying to do

Tech tip:
Install a Zerk fitting in the center of the tube that holds the urethane bushings so they can be easily greased, especially when they’re used for suspension pivots. They squeak like crazy.
Need longer episodes of Trent’s garage. I do understand you have a lot on your plate but hopefully we can see longer content in the future. Happy Father’s Day.

Trent, love your video's. They are very educational. Just some minor criticism which is not intended to be negative, but watching your explanations is like seeing you wave your hands and talking in detail for 90% and actually seeing what you do for 10%.

What you showed is that all this takes time, so if someone wants to pay a mechanic… well, now they SHOULD understand it’s not fast. Nice work!

Trent I’m sure I don’t speak for only myself when I say this. But wether or not you have the most epic content or a video like today people are going to watch it because they enjoy you. You made progress Trent, small parts take time to build, you did great.
TRENT, you should buy a digital calipers to measure thickness or diameters and get a chart that shows drill diameters and tap size and tape it to your toolbox lid underside for easy access. This will help so their's no guesswork at the right size.
I'm not building a rock crawler, not even close, but thanks for the tip.

Trent, please wear safety glasses when you are using your drill press. Those shards were flying and I was screaming for you to put them on. An eye injury would be horrible. Let's keep this channel eye pain free. Scared my dogs they left the room.

My car dealer is charging $900 to replace my car engine's motar mounts. I had no idea it was this labor intensive. Thank you for the demonstration.
Tip from an old welder. If you want to make a super strong weld, you have to make a second weld on the same weld seam. Do the test with two strips. Good luck.

Trent, bit by bit, some things take a long time to do, if you do a good job. Welding is a job you have to get correct the first time.

I thought this was a very interesting episode. I don't build rock crawlers, and have never welded anything. Those were the most beautiful motor mounts that I, and I bet the majority of your viewers have ever witnessed being made!

What you’re doing today reminds me of when I used to quilt. Only a passionate quilter would buy perfectly good fabric and cut it all up into little pieces and sew it all back together. Seems you’re doing the same only with metal. I get it. 😃

Great setup with the Bluetti!
I would go one step further and make a male to male power cord 😱 to plug into the shop's power whenever the grid goes down.
Of course, this is not even close to being in compliance with code. The main breaker on your breaker box must be disengaged and the power in cord to the Bluetti must be disconnected, prior to using this McGyver hack.
The Bluetti's power would reverse the flow of current, back to the main breaker box, which would give you enough temporary power for lighting and to use some tools from any of the sockets that are on the same phase that you're Bluetti is plugged into.
Perhaps a DPDT transfer switchbox could disengage the input power to the Bluetti, before engaging its output power to the shop. Just switch off the main breakers (don't forget!), then switch on your Bluetti's switchbox, and "Bob's your uncle!".
OR you could just install a proper UPS that would achieve the same objective, automatically.
But of course, you already know better than to video doing what I'm suggesting, in case the local inspectors are watching. 😎

I agree with you on the motor mounts for rock crawling but I would use 2 pipes together to form the frame to the motor for extra strength under the high vibration and less chance of cracking the engine supports. The stronger the better as the engine is the heaviest part of you truck. Welding cast iron the best way is to weld and set in kitty litter and heat with torch to slow down the cooling.
Those are some pretty good looking welds.

Trent, very beefy welds. Those motor mount adapters are bomb proof. You should have no trouble with them. I thought Brandon laughing was funny. He does a good job with the camera.

Trent quit over thinking the problem. Use the 3/8th plate and it will hold better with less possible stress cracks. Also I would suggest heating the complete motor mount after your done welding to cherry red and submerging into sand & oil mixture to cool off to anneal all welds and steel.
I know nothing about anything automotive and I love watching these videos.

High School Shop Class 101, Safety Glasses when using the drill. I can hear the teacher yelling now!! That being said, good video.
Not so critical for ferrous metals: The ER can use a magnet to pull the fragments out of your eyeball. Aluminum or other non-ferrous metals are nasty. A lot of stainless is not attracted to magnets, either.

I have seen many professional welds that aren't half as clean as yours. Also, keep the stache. This is your best look.
Not boring at all: I love the fabrication videos, a lot better than just bolting on after-market kits. This is why I watch Fab Rats and Matt. Last thing I fabricated was a double swing gate from two steel fence panels. But that was with oxy-acetylene a couple decades ago. Still working fine! So is the replacement section I had to splice in after my wife got impatient with the electric opener.
One thing I notice is that you skip the first step in most fabrications: Cardboard, a Sharpie, and a box cutter. Cardboard mock-ups can save a lot of time.

Hi Trent, just an FYI most likely the factory motor mount is cast STEEL which you can weld with you mig welder. Cast IRON needs to be welded with NI rod or stainless steel rod and a different technique. Keep up the great job and have fun.
