Can you talk to us about "Jojo" Joanna Levesque and her struggles with her record company and her singing voice and style???
Oh I wish you would of used Annie Lennox 's summertime as a comparison.
Work, Janis. Great video. Many may not know that she spoke out against racial discrimination and segregation.
The fact that not many people know that tells me she didn't use her platform to speak out nearly enough.
@@ThatsJustMyBabyDaddy I think her drug use and the tragedy around her accidental overdose overshadow everything else.
@@ThatsJustMyBabyDaddyOop 🫢
@@ThatsJustMyBabyDaddywell here’s the thing: many do know.
Every time I think of Janis, I think of the story Etta James told about Janis being in the corner at one of her closed recording sessions with a funny looking hat & a oversized puffy coat 😂.
It was in 1970 a few months before she passed. When she questioned a musician why she was there, they said you don't know who that is? Etta said NO! Am i supposed to? ☠️ Janis asked if Etta remembered a white girl coming to sit on the side of the stage & listen to her soundchecks at some club. Etta vaguely remembered, that's when Janis said she was that white girl and Etta had been an influence on her. Etta dismissed the praise at that moment but was later impressed when she heard Janis in person - she also acknowledged that Janis had mastered the Blues.
Etta's influence is noticable when listening to Joplins's "I need a man to love." Specifically, Etta's "I'm so glad" recording.
Etta ripped off Johnny Guitar Watsons voice. People should know that.
Janis did create the rasp from vocal damage but there was some technique choice. If you listen to "one night stand' recorded with the Paul Butterfield Blues band her voice in many parts is a clean as whistle, and the vocal range and runs are fabulous. Also I love her take on 'little girl blue', the arrangement is fantastic and the voice so soothing. The 'Kozmic Blues' album is definitely underrated.
I'm totally agree with you
I know another Brazilian singer called Russo who was also vocally inspired by Janis Joplin, he became known for participating in a television program called "Programa do Raul Gil" and he is a multi-instrumentalist and his vocal performances were very visceral and remarkable!
It's worth mentioning him here out of curiosity. He's a great singer!
Couldn’t wait til I got home! Fantastic video. Well researched and presented, as always. I appreciate that you discussed some of the concerns I know you’ve faced as a creator/producer in highlighting white artists in typically black spaces. Janis’ voice often sounded like it hurt to use, especially when speaking in interviews. I feel the same way about Mariah’s voice and appreciate that you made two allusions to similarities in their instruments
Thank you for this. I do listen to and appreciate many non-black and white artists, and I do believe certain cultural and musical topics related to black music can best be examined through their work. ❤️
could you do amy winehouse video? she was so influenced by black musics too.
I ❤ her voice
A coworker introduced me to Janis' music some years ago and I love every note that she hits. She is an acquired taste ❤ great video
My favorite version of Summertime is performed by Janis; love this song!!!!! This version is on her Cheap Thrills album with Big Brother and the Holding Company and the whole album is one of my favorite albums of all time❤❤❤❤❤❤
I can't explain how grateful as a fan of the voice I am that your channel exists
Extremely touching video. I’m grateful you made this. Analysis on-point. We miss you, Janis.
The note on self-harmonizing…is that what Lalah Hathaway does on that Snarky Puppy performance? Great video! I love the notes on style at the top💐🙏🏾
I've heard about Janis along time ago.....She defitnely has a soulful voice. I think if she didn't smoke and do drugs her voice would've been in good shape to continue making albums if she never passed away, I think she would've been well respected today. I think to an extent her death has something to do with the powers that be. Thanks for making this video Milik, she was a good subject to do a video on
I loveeeeee me some Janis Joplin! Thank you, Milik!💖
I'm NEVER prepared for the video of the vocal chords opening and closing. It takes me completely out every time you use it ☠️☠️☠️
Another DYNAMIC video. Thank you for educating us!❤
I’m at work and I absolutely can’t wait to get home tonight and watch this!! 😍❤️ As always, thank you for all you do!!
Thank you for sharing! I'm not super familiar with her artistry or voice, so I appreciate you highlighting her. Is the Whitney Houston Explained video still coming out soon? Or has it been shelved for the time being?
My exact question
Yes, I’ve been waiting to stream the Whitney Houston video 😩
Ugh, I love Janis. Such a talent.
Nice work Milik. Janis was no joke! To follow up your conclusion, I think that’s the beauty of what one prefers. Meaning that had her voice been in a “healthy condition” she more than likely wouldn’t of became the Janis people grew to love.
Janis, one of my favorite singers and a great inspiration for countless voices in the world! Especially for a singer I really like called Rosana Fienngo, Brazilian and who was very inspired by Janis!
The hoarse voice and the vocal drives, the raspy vocals are the best in Janis!
Rita Lee was inspired by Janis as well, if you listen to her earlier stuff with Os Mutantes.
@@lucasribeiro7534 but I spoke about vocal influence. I know that Rita was very inspired by Janis.
Absolutely loved her voice! Thank you for this video!
But... yeah that was alot of vocal damage.
Man, gone too soon, when I first heard her voice, it took me a while to get used to it, but as I continued to listen more to her music, I realize she was and still is a great musician.
Love Janis my favorite song by her is summertime cry baby and little girl blue
I love this analysis! I wanna see your take on Amy Winehouse's voice and analysis on it
IM SO GRATEFUL FOR THIS. THIS MAY NOT BE THE WHITNEY VIDEO BECASUE OF YOUR TRAGEDY, BUT YOU DEFINITELY CAME THROUGH. THIS WILL ALWAYS MAKE ME MORE GRATEFUL.
Oop, not you brought up the tragedy! 🤭
That's what makes this world so beautiful. We can like different styles colors sounds. When I run into those who want to chastise someone for being different. I think that if they could have their wish for a week everything being the same. They would want to change it back to the way it was.🙏🏾
I cannot.believe this. Another good job from you, Milik.
She was a passionate artist
You have to feel what you're singing, about LOVE, about PAIN, about JOY, about LOSS!
You can't produce her sound without feeling what you long for in your song while performing it.
THIS IS JANIS" YOU HEAR ME!!
She is passionate in LOVE, and JOY! She is empathetic in PAIN, and LOSS!
She sings her soul.
YOU HAVE TO FEEL IT!!🌈🤗
RIGHT!!!
Thanks!I hope you will explaine Dusty Springfield and Lisa Stansfield voices.
A voice so complex and rich we understand her only by discussing other greats as diverse as Tina, Aretha and Renee Fleming. It's very hard to find the vocabulary--musical or otherwise--to describe Janis. Thank you, Milik, for your insight.
Phenomenal video! Thanks so much! We love Janice too! ❤❤❤
I see pain every time I listen to Janis Joplin …..
Wouldn’t be surprised if she was in pain while singing
It'd be nice for a video on Ann Wilson, another great singer
Do you think you’ll do nina Simone one day ?
Thank you for doing this! I love Janis ✌🏼
Omg! I can’t wait to deep dive into this!!!
I'm so excited for this!
This is great! I’m curious about the Whitney Houston segment as well? I thought that was coming
Thank you so much for this ❤
Thank you so much for giving us all these great analysis! ❤❤❤
Oooh, this is an interesting one!
Excellent....as ALWAYS ❤
@BlackMusicArchive I really love the deep dives you do on this channel on the different vocal styles. Can you please do vocal breakdown on James Brown ? I would love to hear your analysis on his voice
yes please do James Brown!
okaayy with the bonnie bramlett reference! bonnie bramlett is like that old church mother who, while not the best singer, has so much "lived in" quality to their voice that you feel every word they sing! her daughter bekka is a pretty badass singer too. there's a contemporary rock/blues singer called beth hart who is (literally) a modified for this time version of janis joplin... she's 100% worth a listen.
Well done sir. We'll done!
Ooo was surprised but pleased to see this! Would love to see you talk about Karen Dalton and Tracy Nelson too
Thank you.
The fact that she is from Port Arthur same as Pimp C & ugk 🎉🎉🎉
Exactly what I thought
excellent video
Great channel btw
Ugh teeena. I love her such
As always you educate and entertain. Please do a video on Teena Marie.
I second this as well
Heroin immediately makes your voice raspy also. I've been clean 13 years and I can identify a heroin user in 2 syllables unfortunately 🙏🏾
Love the channel, but the audio on your voice is peaking in the low end. Are you adding Eq to it?
💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
Woohooo
Do one on Barry White. 18:04
Maybe I'm missing it can someone help me understand how is she and Aretha similar
It's more of a style and context thing. In write-ups of the time, you'll see people mention Janis, Aretha, and Belting in the same sentence. In 1968, Aretha and Tina Turner were the only ones using their voices/belting in this way in popular music, which is why Janis is likened to them despite her music not sounding like theirs.
Also, it is important to note that Janis had cited Aretha as one of her inspirations/influences.
@@BlackMusicArchive ok. Got it. Thank you so much
Maybe, to answer the finsl question, she would have sounded something like Joss Stone before Joss Stone who was once called "Aretha Joplin" (by Smokey Robinson)
Exactly. Plus she seemed like the type who would have helped later white soul artists avoid the "we don't know how to market you, so let's pretend you're black, a novelty, or doom you to obscurity" trap of the 70s-00s :/
what is janis' voice type?
She was a mezzo soprano.
Her music sits between A♭3 and A♭5.
@@BlackMusicArchive that's a mezzosoprano tessitura?
@@MrPeppeREyes
@@BlackMusicArchive or maybe a low soprano
Might be messed up to say but I liked her voice during the drugs more than her original voice 🤷🏾♂️
😭😭😭😭😭
I honestly think that she did, too - and it's pretty obvious Christina Aguilera ruined her voice for similar reasons. It sounds more emotional, like Janis was using physical pain and damage to make up for the "I'm middle class, but my grandparents' best friends were slaves" vibes of her earlier music.
@@sharpestcookieinthetoolbox9742 wait Christina was on drugs?
@@chrisblue961no, they’re saying that Christina is doing the same physical emotional singing that Janis did as well, which caused them both Vocal damage
That’s why she was popular after all 😂
Otterly patterson Irish blues singer from the 50s
Hated it. *likes and subscribes
Tina Turner is the Queen & Janis is right behind her! 🔥
That cacophonous, screaming coyote coudn't touch the tip of Tina's shoe.
