My son's 87 does that. i replaced the sending unit when i put in new hoses, and thermostat. everything reads correct on the sending unit. i figured it has to be a bad ground somewhere. The both quit working at same time. I wonder if the fault is on the back of the instrument cluster.
@@williampipkin5975 my 87 is doing it intermittently might work ok for a month, might not work the next day start driving boom its back on. think this will help. but yes it does temp and gas gauge together

Will the resistances spec in the service manual show bad prior to cleaning the contact areas as described?
I'll give this a shot, my guages only go up 1/4 the way. Also, none of the lights turn on.
