Belgian Jigsaw Camouflage Effectiveness

- In this video we look at the effectiveness of Belgian Jigsaw camouflage in a heavily vegetated woodland environment. This video includes scenes that show the patterns use when both concealed with and without the use of vegetation in the environment, as well as what the pattern looks like moving and stationary.
More information about the pattern can be found here:
www.camopedia.org
Surprising how different it looks depending on viewing distance. What matters most is how it looks at 100 yards or more, which is typical combat distance.
Yup
average typical distance of fighs with firearms in war are more often 200-450 yards, this range is the most typical one and studied
Camo originally designed for Belgian paratroopers in duty in central Africa where the mud is red-brown and with yellow-burned and deep-green foliage... perfect in a wet environnement like african jungle and "ematiti" and does his work pretty decent in our central europe forests... By the way, try (if you can find him) the aweosome Luxemburg camo pattern which is the same as the finnish camo pattern... works pretty good for central europe dry forests, and quite surprisingly in urban environnements...
cheers from Belgium !
maverickaegis76 Thanks for your input brother.
you're welcome... ;)
+maverickaegis76 I am half Luxemburgish half Finnish and served in the Finnish Defence Forces, it's quite funny that the Luxemburgish military ripped off the autumn/early winter patter of the FDF! It's a great pattern nontheless! :)
Haven't seen the Lux version live, but from the pics I've seen it seems that the Lux versions gray is darker then in our "Frosty Camo" (which is almost snow white, slightly greenish shade.)
The gray in Lux version seems "light concrete gray", Frosty Camo's gray is almost snow white, slightly greenish shade.
The fact that Frosty is printed only on the Viking fabric (quite smooth, almost shiny fabric, originally developed for outdoor work clothing; "Enstex" was the original name for that type of fabric) enhances the whiteness and brings out the color borders - not always a good thing for a camo. Even so, even with minimal snow, even just slight frost, Frosty works remarkably well - but if the weather is just above zero °C, everything is wet and dark, the light greenish gray looks out of place.

Also take in consideration he is not in the environment this camo was made for. Still works relatively well IMO. A lot better then I thought
What environment would that be?
@@pieterwillembotha6719 central africa
@@nuffinmuch6673 Would it work in southern Africa?
@@pieterwillembotha6719 European pine forest like the Ardennes
@@Spoon3rYT But this was worn in the jungles of the Congo. Still useful in this region?
Being belgian myself, and having done quite a lot of airsoft, I'm quite familiar with this camo, and I have to say I'm on the fence with it.
Depending on the year of production and how new or washed out it is, it can go anywhere from dangerously useless to absurdly effective.
My personnal outfit more than once allowed me to be unseen at less than 10m while just laying on the ground behind thin bushes, but I also know a few guys with it who look like a christmas tree. You really have to hand pick a surplus and keep it just right.
Also, it's (in my experience) more effective from fall to early spring than it is late spring and summer.
In the end, I decided to go with surplus german flecktarn. Again, you have to choose the right shade, but they are on average more effective. The last kit I built was incredibly effective for something I paid next to nothing for. Was just as well camouflaged as the guys with their expensive A-TAC, MARPAT or MultiCam
I really like your camouflage effectiveness videos. Sometimes when you see a pattern in a store, you have no idea how well it will or will not work. Your videos have been helpful in making decisions as to what to purchase, and more importantly, what to stay away from. Keep up the good work!
Thanks man, glad I could help.
I hate to say this but I admit I am eating crow right now...when you first had this on at the beginning i thought it was a joke...the yellows and bluish greens with what looks to be pink, but when it was demonstrated I found it works fantastic in that environment...even better than the marpat... (ducking the lightening bolts) just goes to show that you don't judge a book by its camo
stuparris it's not pink, it's more brown-ish
its a dark shade of red actualy ;)
Its widely regarded as an awful camouflage, but never the less it does get the job done.
Its like TAZ 83 (alpenflage) the camo is primarily tan and red (supposed to be brown but its red), its clearly meant for autumn but it does fairly well year round.
I suppose as long as the pattern breaks up your outline and you move and position accordingly, colour isnt quite as important (reletively speaking).
The Jigsaw camo actually works very well here in Europe, especially in northen europe where you'll find lots of yellow and pink. For a distance, Jigsaw almost looks like Flecktarn. I have seen both side by side for distance.
>DPR flag
The Jigsaw is good when it's been worn a couple of times, when it's brand new the color is way to bright.
For people who are/were used to using this camo, it wasn't that hard to spot you to be honnest :)
Still great video and it was nice to see the Belgian camo somewhere out of Belgium.
I have had the chance to test a lot fo camos. Living in Europe has helped. One this I would say, is that when we test a camo, we have to remember where it is expected to be used. When the Belgums develpoed this pattern, they expected to use it in Western Europe and Africa. Rawanda to be exact. Anyway, great tutorial. I was happy that with my older eyes, I could make you out everytime. But I would guess a less experinced person would not. I made my test in the Swiss Alps, in a very green environment. The Jigsaw pattern works great. thanks for the video.
i never saw him until he moved
The belgian army has a new camo patern comming up next year. the jigsaw patern is kept but colours are altered for european vegetation. the white bits are gone, the brow has lost its purplish redish aperance and is now oak brown. the types of green have lost the yellowish tint also. The Belgian army always uses the jigsaw pattern but has aslo desert and other variants like the snow variant. I myself find it very effective regarding it doesn't look as 'cool' as other countries camo. Greetings from Belgium.
Sergent Gyns
Gijns Jurgen hey als ik klaar ben met mijn 7e jaar Kantoor verkoop, dan kan ik naar de militaire school in brussel gaan toch?
Aart Bruneel oke bedankt :)
ik heb de kans gekregen om deze nieuwe camouflage te proberen tijdens een zomer camp in heverlee, aesthetically I would choose the older one 😀
I'm still waiting for the new camo tunics :(
Een scouts leider die nu op de KMS zit heeft gezegd dat we gaan overstappen op multicam.
Brent you are the man idk how I didn't bump into your RUclips channel a long time ago . Your content is amazing.
Thanks for all these camouflage videos. They have been eye opening as to how effective some patterns are during a particular season and what to avoid in Texas.
Thanks
I watched a number of your camo vids and what I find is Shape and Shine defeats most camo, I found this to be true back in the day as well. The body shape needs to be broken up in conjunction with the camo, the body shape is like a beacon saying shoot here, camo helps hide the shape, but it's not enough.Shine once the sun hits makes the bod just stand out, I always found that on overcast days much harder to pick out individuals. I like your Vids and Channel.
Great video as usual! I've always thought this camo was so cool. You are quite dedicated to these, because I know this must take all day.
Thank man.
Im considering buying a surplus Belgian rucksack in this pattern and had my doubts about the effectiveness. Of course I thought of you first and sure enough you have tested it. It appears to be a good fall pattern as well. Sweet rifle, I'm jealous! Thanks for the great video.
lol this is like the man's version of "find Waldo" XD
greets from Belgium, even though i'm italian and served in belgian armed forces.
btw even though the fal is belgian, the fn fnc is the standard infantry rifle and is slowly being replaced by the fn f2000 1/3 is already being replaced..fal is usually sold to african nations
Jigsaw rocks. very proud to wear it daily! nice vid man.
Thanks
I believe that's my favorite pattern
When you buy it new the colours look more natural and on camera they look brighter.
I've tested this pattern a lot and can say that it works especially in late summer in forests not as light green as in this video.
Far better than I anticipated. The liver-brown color and the yellow both didn't give away a thing.
I was able to spot Brent in about half of the situations, but @ 4:20, 5:17, 6:54, 7:50... total concealment! Stunning :)
Belgian camo and FAL ... You have some good taste !
Kapov Thanks bud. I'd take a FAL into combat any day.
+Brent0331 what about FNC?
Dylan Moens
It's closer to an Ak than a FAL
It has the reliability of an AK because it uses the same gas system, as Does the SCAR. but it fires a 5.56 round wich is more accurate but lacks the punch of the FAL's 7,62
It's purposes were that it can work a woodland terrain from spring to fall.
The red was put there because of the colors in the fall time and has had great success in that season.
Belgian jig saw exsist since the late fifties of previouss century .They were used alongside wth the brushstroke or moons and balls .colors then were very different compared to these days . Great vid.
Seems to do well at a distance, inside 10 yards or so the red shade starts to "pop". Good one Gunny.
Maybe it works with brick walls too
Yeah, the yellows start to blend with light green leaves at a distance and the reddish shades look brown (like with the Swiss pattern). An under rated pattern.
Good stuff Brent, surprising how this pattern blends in well. Thanks.
It works a lot better them multicam, but then the para's can be dropped into many differing environments, so perhaps this was a multi cam of years gone by
when you come out of hiding can you stop a bit longer to see how you blend in. Since this is some what a tutorial; I am watching for movement traits that are specific to Humans like the swagger or waving of your weapon as you walk. I noticed the sun hitting the flat surfaces and making a patterned flash. Not criticizing at all; just observing. Is there a way to walk to or move which won't mimic normal human and very recognizable patterns? it's easy to track someone when they are moving in a constant speed.
First let me say, I'm on the fence about this pattern because the reds and yellows stick out like a sore thumb. It would probably be well suited for fall to spring with the reds and yellows IMHO.
On side note I am starting to be able to find you easier regardless of uniform. Thank goodness my eyes arent failing me.
I dunno if this means the army really need me, but I spotted him almost immediately with each scene change. Only had a couple of doubts and completely stumped in ONE of the clips
Correct me if I'm wrong, but our Paratroopers already used that pattern in the Sixties. We, regular Army guys, had one color (green) BDUs. In the Nineties we finally got the same camo and I hated it! When it was new, you shone in the dark, so you had to wash them 10 or more times the get the brightness out. We also had to keep a new one aside for parades.
There also was a heavier (and supposedly warmer) version of vest and trousers you put on over the normal BDU when it got colder, but then again, it was very bright. But washing them several times ruined them (they weren't waterproof anymore).
So they got us a rain vest and trousers, again very bright and as trhey were made of some specific fabric, you couldn't get them to fade....
This pattern was still used during our first deployments In Somalia and Afghanistan, so even when they were faded, you would make a great target in the desert.
But then they finally bought us desert and other camo BDUs.

It's funny when I was in Marche les Dames there were a couple of air force guys there for their commando B certification and one of our cadre remarked to us that if he ever saw one of us wear that "clown" camo (which kinda looked a bit like a flecktarn) he'd personally "beat us up" The camo does well in certain parts of Africa which was one of the goals for its design.
My best friend wore this camo uniform on a hunting trip here in Australia my initial reaction was WTF are you wearing however I was pleasantly surprised by how effective it was.
Definitely some effectiveness. I would imagine fall time with lots of Maples. Interesting though!
people. yes it is not effective. but the pattern was developed after the Congo crisis for our troops in Africa. (we had Congo, the place witht the most Gold and 80% of the richest uranium in the world)
and it was kept to honor our troops who fought and died out there. my granddad was a paracommando himself (he survived) and he said it fits well in the terrain there. the mud is more redbrown in Congo and the ocre and dark green work good with the trees.
we recently developed another pattern for our troops in afghanistan wich is more effective in that environment. it consists of a lot of tan some mint green and brown.
RC-355/04 would they not honour the current soldiers and their own lives by giving them a more effective camouflage?
RC-355/04 true, it sounds like a fellow belgian speaking 😏🇧🇪
The soldiers in Congo never went out of the big cities. The Belgian state hired mercenaries to go on the field and bring back prisoners and hostages to the Belgian military. Also, it would be stupid to wear a strategical piece of equipment "in memory of". Your actual life is more valuable than some memories, isn't it ?
A good reason to make this camo something to be worn during ceremonies/parades only, and switch to something more functional for everyday use.
Perhaps the effectiveness is questionable for military applications ,however it could be effective in the fall season where there are a lot of falling leaves .
This camouflage might be best for fall here in America and that’s about it because of the red and yellow
Hey you should try predator camo green deception it seems to be a very effective camouflage pattern I would love to see a effectiveness test
Everytime the camera cuts: "Where's waldo???"
Seriously pretty sure I saw you everytime. So far I think the Croatian camo is the best you've demonstrated for that thick southern vegetation.
I think it would work best in a wet/dark environment
@Aart Bruneel i was about to say the exact same thing lol
Great video...some of those old European camos look kind of rediculous up close in a well lit surplus store but when you see them out in the field they seem to work pretty well. I really enjoy your camo effectiveness videos, keep 'em coming. Thanks!
Thanks for watching.
i just read on a vendor website how bad this camo is so I had to see for myself. Actually, it performed very well in your environment. Though as mentioned previously, different batches may yield different results as far as colors go.
Believe it or not this camo actually works really well in the autumn, all those red and gold leaves all over the ground and all that.
I lost count, but I spotted you almost every time in this one
Because he's always in frame, if you're walking around in a forest and you have a much wider view, you won't know were they are. And it's more suited for belgian environment, large dark oaks, pine forests, rainy and wet...
@@mw-tj6ob I'm well aware of that. I give feedback as part of the test. For the other videos' comments I went instance by instance with a bit of detail, to be more scientific
Would you say that this jacket is good for warm weather?
I like this pattern ,although i think it would fair better in the fall when the leaves start to turn .
trust me. Belgium is wetter and darker, it works perfectly
This Christmas I bought my brother a book if where's Brent!
That's surprisingly good
Belgian Jigsaw was surprisingly effective especially at a distance, the further away you got the colors blended together and appeared to form a single earth tone of brown. Not a bad camo I'll bet it would be even more effective in the fall/winter, BTW you have got to test mossy oak obesession before the summer is up I'm dying to see how effective it is and you should also get some KLMK you can get a suit of it for $79.00 off of soviet-power.com.
My next video is probably either going to be Obession, Coyote Tan PART II, or both. Just depends on how much time I have to film.
a good pants pattern if you are using something else on top for break up. thanks for the hard work
Thanks
Its as if the camo distorts itself as you get farther away, more effective at longer ranges.
It is cool and efficient in some forms
I honestly thought this would have been a huge fail when I first saw the camo. After the demo...I'm alittle surprised how effective it was.
How does this uniform hold up as far as wear and sizing? Also availability in the USA?
this is an old video but one of the only and best representing this camo, i bought a surplus set, pants and vest and i'm still very unsure as how it works, i think i'll have to wash it down because it looks too bright color wise but from what i've seen it seems to be crazy effective, i should buy more sets i mainly use them for urban exploration
Old vid and comment but yes, washing it is the key ;)
Thank you for all your hard work making this extremely interesting video. I found it really informative. Keep up the good work. Mark, Solware tv.
Thanks
hey brent, hows it been going my brother ? man you sure got some beautiful country up there, you could build a small f.o.b. out there and no one would ever find it, thats awsome ! nice job on the vid !
Thanks man.
Always great videos! You should do a camouflage effectiveness video for Pencott Badlands or Surpat next.
Might pick up Surpat, looking into it.
It was developed for our troops in Africa, the moon&balls pattern works better here in my opinion.
The mud in Congo has a purple/red tint to it. Thats why they went with that color
Have you done a video with a gillie suit yet?
At first I thought there was no way that camo was going to work, but it actually worked better than I thought. I've been sitting here just going thought video after video, and this one surprised me the most. Also keeping in mind that different countries have different environments. What works well for the majority of one country may work poorly in the majority of another country. Or season for that matter. I'd think this camo would work better in the fall or a dryer environment.
the yellow splotches in this pattern kinda reminded me of lime green ERDL... do you have any ERDL or plans to make a vid on that? or would it be too much like Woodland to go to the trouble? (I realize it's getting kinda pricey these days too). Came out Vietnam-era; there were 2 versions: green dominant & brown dominant-- basically, brown dominant became M81 Woodland, but the green dominant had lime green instead of tan. Always been one of my fav patterns; I have a jacket that's made from both green & brown dominant fabrics (guess they were running low on fabric at the factory & just used what they had to complete a run)... I'll secure a complete set one of these days. Oh and what do you think of US4CES camo? (it's green digital similar to CADPAT; it's what the ANA's wear now I guess). Thanks for the vids you've posted so far!

Subscribed! Excellent video, thank you!
I love you videos !
Thanks brother.
I feel like this camo would do much better in the fall. But great video!
Out of nowhere @ 8:10....nice!!!
I don’t like the pattern, but in the words of my father, “you’ve got to be still.” I’ve killed a lot of unsuspecting animals in my life and what he said is the ultimate truth. If you can’t be still, move so slowly that your movement can’t be detected.
It's quite easy to find you, your camouflage is too dark. This is just my opinion but I think the belgian one is not adapted for the woods, rather for the "Fagnes" as we call it here. Flecktarn is better for woods because it mixes leaves/herbs, trees and shadows.
+PaTou 1440 Nice, thanks for paying the ticket ! :D
Visually it looks really cool! It’s almost like a statement saying that World War I camouflage is still effective. While that is not its intended environment it still works quite well
What Type of Knife are You Carrying?
I thought it worked pretty well considering it color choices. I wonder how it would work against NVG. At a distance the colors break up into a color that is very hard to pick up with the background. In real life it could be different.
all these patterns with reds like this and alpenflage are pretty effective. the reds turn to browns at most distances.
I have the jigsaw jacket, however I'm not sure what this handle is on the front that is attached with a pressure button. There's also a button on the shoulder, can someone tell me what this is about?
The handle on the front is for the display of your rank I believe.
Greets from The Netherlands
Thanks for watching and hello from Texas!
SPG bro? Been wanting a set myself. Since that one dude explained why red works in Alpenflage it doesn't sound so bad now.
Yup.
I think it was so easy to find him, because we knew he was there. If you don't expect to see something, you are most likely not going to find it.
i find most of camo too dark for your testing ground dont you have something lighter ?
Hey brent, you give some of the best camo tests I have ever seen- is there any chance you can test the SURPAT camouflage?
I wasn't able to find a good deal on it in time for this spring/summer season. Maybe next year.
***** sweet you gave me hope haha. Keep up the awesome work, man
Thanks
Maybe it's just me but there seems to be a huge counter ambush training component to these camo effectiveness videos.
A military training simulaltion tech company could expand on this concept and have every known camo pattern and a variety of environments loaded into a mini-Imax sized training simulator.
Time ratio related to identifying friendly or otherwise would be the initial objective. Neutralizing threat via computer simulation and time ratios could easilly be scored.
I grew up in the woods but we are in a different age now. Real is best but technology and training are million dollar ideas. I just gave this one away for free.
what kind of chest rig were you using?
Kind of suprised worked well, but It's a bit too dark at times and @16:17 , @8:10 I can see Brent like a sore thumb.
Good job hiding really anything shiny.. that helps
Everyone always chirps jigsaw but it's honestly a good pattern.
They designed new uniforms you should check it out.
Very affective
Thanks!
Appreciate it brother! Thanks for watching.
Great video as always. At a far distance very effective, but at a medium or up close not so effective. I still like your tiger stripe video presentation the best.
Thanks
Digging the camo vids man! Any plans of doing one on Slovakian "slocam" or the Russian "surpat"?
Working on picking up some Surpat but its going to take it awhile to get to the States once I order it.
***** Thanks, looking forward to it!
Hey man, do you think you could give Auscam a try?
I wish I could brother its not that readily available here in the states yet.
That's a shame, it's a dime a dozen here is Aus
Check out tacticalgeartrade.com you can get a set of auscam off their site for just $36.99.
I am Belgian, i heard it works perfectly fine in the Belgian wilds. So it should be great and its distinctive for the Belgian Military. :D
Thanks for commenting.
Bedoel je het Schipperskwartier, Antwerpen, met "the Belgian Wilds?". Grapje, natuurlijk.
@Johan Nee, het Schipperskwartier is al maanden gesloten.
Can you try ASAT camo please.
Outstanding
Thanks
Any idea where I can pickup a set of the Jigsaw for not the price of my first born child?
Sand Worm I had picked mine up from Sportsmanguide.com at a really good price.
here in Belgium they cost like 5€ for a 90's pair of trousers :p or you can get the new SFG variant (thicker more water resistant variant wich has a more subdued pattern) for 30€
Arnaut De backer doe eens een link als je kan
robin6512 www.stockoma.be deze winkel heb ik de mijne gevonden. Zij hebben vanalles. Maar geen webshop :/
Arnaut De backer bedankt Arnaut. Zal eens gaan kijken.
If anyone would tell me where does the red color blend in nature? Falling leaves?! No falling leaves here...
I can tell you it has nothing to do with nature but its more psychologic for the brain the color red is really hard to process so from a distance your brain will fill in the red parts with the colors around you.
@@-timothydexterthegreatestp5391 mmm thanks for the info, i need to do some research abt this...
Opening scene you looked like you came right out of Croatia !
I second that, make Surpat next!
Working on picking some up, its going to take awhile for it to ship over to the states too.
***** Süper! Can't wait! I've already seen pictures of it and it looks great
Thank you.
Nice vid and nice FAL
How much time do you need for such a video?
oh and a autumn test would be nice, you will be invisible.^ ^
Locke DerBOSS It takes me probably about an hour and a half to prep for and then film the video. The editing usually takes me another hour or so.
What's his gun called?
don't suppose you could try Australian army camo?
I don't currently have any, if I get my hands on it I will definitely do a video on it.
Probably would work slightly better in the fall.
I could hear you but you must have walked off and left the camera running or something because that was it. Nice scenery though.
Terrible. This is for rain & tropical forest with red clay earth like Africa & not for continental Europe or USA. Might work in autumn.
