What are some of your favourite alternative beginner songs that fulfil some or all of my criteria? Let me know and I'll create a full list on the beginner's section of my site.
Friday I'm in Love - The Cure. Nice single note line which is just played on a D chord and easy but interesting strum pattern. There is a Bm in there which is a barre chord obviously, but can be fluffed and just played as an upper triad.
I couple I liked when starting out were "Animal Instinct" by the Cranberries and "Find the river" by REM. They have some Cadd9 and Dsus chords but I think that still counts as beginner friendly. Maybe only small-a "alternative" though :)
That's funny because most of the things I want to learn are way out of my reach. It's always either the intro or the riff that makes you think oh okay I can do this but then the verse and bridge drops and youre dead.
Thats what I've always done i fucking hate stereotypical song books, music is about expression and creativity so what purpose does it serve to us doing the same shit as everyone else. I taught myself
I learnt wonderwall, a song i hate, but really did learn some sweet strumming patterns learning it. I don’t think it’s always true to just learn what you want :)
I find this true. Learn the songs you like because you’ll know them. You’ll be able to express yourself through your interpretation. Once you’re confident enough you’ll surprise yourself as to how fast you can pick up “common beginner songs”
@@falcodarkzz I think the rational is if you really like a song, you'll practice it to death, whereas learning one you dislike is hard work, regardless of how "good it'll be for you". Keep in mind that the majority of people who start learning an instrument give up fairly quickly.
The bad news is: I'm 51 next week and only just got a guitar and started trying to play for the first time (with any serious intent); the good news is: I've found this channel! A completely cool and non-boring selection with clear and knowledgeable presentation and no BS. Thanks so much, awesome stuff. Some Brian Jonestown Massacre would be the icing on the cake!
I love your rules Adrian - and I learned of a few new bands/ songs. 1 Walk on the wild side 2:25 2 I like birds 2:48 3 I am trying to break your heart 4:48 4 The goldheart mountaintop queen directory 6:03 5 Sin city 7:16 6 Not if you were the last junkie on Earth 8:03 7 Just like honey 8:59 8 Rumble 10:24 9 Human fly 11:51 10 I wanna be your dog 12:57 Of course you guess my favorites ... May I suggest an intense power chord practice with "Army life" by the Exploited
Advice to anyone out there: learn how to play Nirvana's first album: Bleach! Its a great sounding, fun to play record but very basic at times so its very beginner friendly. I personally feel like this album helped kickstart my passion for guitar playing!
I have a pal learning as the moment after the untimely death of his beloved wife. He's running a gamut of emotions really, but your song choices are inspired. I will send this to him in the hope it inspires as much as it did me. You're a beautiful man and a beautiful spirit.
Buying a Boss DS-1 or a cheap EHX pedal and dialing it in definetly helps with getting a decent sound out of a cheap setup. Learning how to use the amps EQ also helps!
I dont know why everyone says the F chord is so hard. I needed it in one of the first few songs that I wanted to learn so I just learned it. I always play it Barre though because "baby" F is a pain, and doesn't sound as good.
Merrilyn Tattersall a barre chord is when your index finger holds down every string on a fret, is if it were a capo. So on an F, your index finger holds down all the strings on the first fret.
Thou art brilliant. I was smiling from the first to the last second of this video. If anybody had told me thirty years ago that this is possible ... people who are (in a way) like me, on some kind of telly, teaching me stuff that I like, whenever I want to.
What a fabulous list of truly iconic songs of the alternative variety!! My first comment was made before I heard the whole list but when you stood up to usher in some feedback- awesome!!
Most of the comments are from 3 and 4 years ago, saw one from 1 year ago, so hopefully this comment gets through. Thank you for the video, I am definitely a beginner even though I bought my first guitar more than 30 years ago. I took a couple of lessons, really only learned what you just showed here, power chords. Then I practiced lead on my own for a few months, and unfortunately, life happened and I never kept up with playing. So, after all of these years, I'm ready to start playing again. I feel this video will definitely help me get going, as it shows three or four chords, and the strumming used as you move between them. I am mainly looking to get good at rhythm first, really learn the chord shapes and moving between them.
Great list and quick instruction. My greatest tangible growth as a player was learning "Rumble" and that descending scale. Also: that jazzmaster is beautiful.
Thank you for this list! +1,000,000 points for The Cramps and The Stooges! Would love to see a detailed video on the ones you haven't done yet! Thank you for being an awesome human being and making me a better guitar player!
The songs I’d say that are great beginner songs and which I learned was 1. Californication by red hot chilli peppers (without the crazy barrechord stuff) 2. Hurt by Johnny cash 3. Nothing else matters by Metallica 4. Fake plastic trees by Radiohead 5. boulevard of broken dreams by green day 6. Whole lotta love by led zeppelin 8. Nutshell by Alice in chains 9. Rooster by Alice in chains (one of the best songs to practice barre chords) 10. Lose yourself by Eminem 11. In bloom by nirvana 12. Come as you are by nirvana 13. Civil war by guns n’ roses (great for learning alternate picking) 14. Killing in the name of by rage against the machine 15. Chop suey! By system of a down. I hope I could’ve helped a beginner out there, Keep being epic my dudes.
A really good beginner song for someone who is new to power chords is The Hardest Button to Button by the White Stripes. I remember learning it in the first month or two of playing guitar.
Such a brilliant idea. I wish there had been something like this when I was starting. Apart from anything I would have learned about a lot of great bands that took me years to discover.
These are some pretty cool songs I've learned as a beginner: •Bad Moon Rising by CCR •Boulevard Of Broken Dreams by Green Day •Zombie by The Cranberries •A Horse With No Name by America •Born In The USA by Bruce Springsteen •Free Fallin by Tom Petty •Wonderwall by Oasis •Island In The Sun by Weezer •Hurt by Nine Inch Nails •Blitzkrieg Bop by The Ramones
Swam - much better selection of songs than the hipster selection this guy gave ( wonderwall is a great song , just because it's overplayed doesn't change the fact it sold more than any of his choice picks ) His taste has a lot to be desired .
I seem to have a lot of friends with kids learning to play the guitar right now and I always send them a link to this video. Fun choices, with good pedagogy. Really helpful!
i've been playing guitar for a few years now and i've never tried 'I WANNA BE YOUR DOG' even though I absolutely love The Stooges and Iggy Pop (his Post Pop Depression concert is one of my favourites ever). WHAT A POWER! Thank you Adrian
Wow, thank you SO MUCH for turning me on to these great songs I have never heard of (except walk on the wild side). As a beginner I've been avoiding open mic nights because I was embarrassed to stand up and play the tired old beginner standards. Now I've got a good reason to stand up and introduce the audience to new tunes, even with my limited skills. Thank you again -- I've subscribed!
2:34 Walk on the Wild Side - Lou Reed 3:48 I like Birds - Eels 4:47 I am Trying to Break Your Heart - Wilco 6:01 The Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory - GBV 7:14 Sin City - Flying Burrito Brothers 8:02 Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth - Dandy Warhols 8:58 Just Like Honey - The Jesus and Mary Chain 10:23 Rumble - Link Wray 11:49 Human Fly - The Cramps 12:56 I Wanna Be Your Dog - The Stooges 14:33 Bonus Song 9 American 1 Scottish
Dude!!!! when you played the Stooges at the end... deadly!! Ive only been playing for about 7 months. Up to this point, RUclips and self-taught. This is the first time Ive watched one of your videos. I really enjoyed and am practicing what you showed, hehe. subscribed
Songs I had learned so far! 1.When I come around by Green day 2. Rumble by link wray 3. Blitzkrieg bop by Ramones 4. Fly away by Lenny kravitz 5. Times like these by Foo fighters 6. My hero by Foo fighters I'm funny enough currently learning I wanna be your dog
As a low intermediate guitarist (really a singer but forced to play rhythm guitar in my new band!) I really appreciate these choices. You also have extraordinarily good taste!
Excellent list! I’m a total beginner and have been working though “Human Fly” and “Rumble” which happen to be some my of my all time favorites regardless of their beginner status. Now I’m very inspired to learn “I wanna be your dog”. On another note, I would love I eventually see a tutorial for “Head On” by Jesus and Mary Chain. Can’t seem to find a good lesson for that one on RUclips and it sounds very fun to play (once I develop a little more dexterity with beginner songs). Hope you’re staying well and thanks for sharing your musical talents!
Today's music sux x1994x google what tuning used in the song then look up the pro guitar shop video for fender jazzmaster 66 japan. Papa Andy plays almost every riff in the song. You’re welcome.
Excellent stuff! GBV & Stooges, superb & good to hear someone play I Wanna Be Your Dog properly. Stiff Little Fingers, another alt/indie/punk band based very much around open chords. They taught me how to play. Alternative Ulster is an excellent example, but it does have a B minor in it (not necessarily a barre chord). Keep up the good work!!!
A little late to the party, (just subscribed today), after watching another one of your vids. To come to this one, and find that our dearly missed Mr. Reed is song #1 - wow!
Thank you very much!!! I learned Sunday morning with your video like 4 years ago!! I´m so glad you still share this kind of music. Lou Reed is somethig I really didn´t appreciate so much untill I started playing the guitar, I love how he could make beautifull music with simple stuff.
That's a great, easy to play and easy to learn beginner's list. We can get into the nuances of different ways to play chords (barred), major 6s, minors, 7ths and sus's later. For a beginner, with a few simple chords - it's just the way it is (i.e. don't worry about why, it's just the way it is. We can get into the why later).
Love your guitar collection matey, I've got a left handed Jazzmaster on order, can't wait for it to arrive. I've just started giving a friend guitar lessons and he's an absolute beginner. These songs will be perfect for teaching him the basic chords in the context of some great tunes.
Love this video! Watched when I started playing, really nice to see it again couple years later. Would a amazing to have this for intermediate as well! thanks and especially songs to cover with a band.
Great list. I think "Redemption song" is another easy to play beginner song. You should listen an indie band from Argentina, it's called "El mato a un policía motorizado" and the song is "Amigo piedra", really great and easy song.
I actually love the songs you chose, PROPS TO YOU MAN. Also, your video on Feel The Pain helped me a lot cause I was struggling with that solo, keep it up man.
Really liking your refreshing different take on beginner songs. It would be great to have a dedicated video on how to play I Wanna Be Your Dog. Thank you.
lovely lesson. i am nearing the end of my fretboard follies after 40 years of noodles. never had a face to face lesson, and in the 80s pre t'internet it was learn by ear, dodgy mail order cassette tapes and hand written tab (jack wilcox hee) from nme. my best wins over the years were just winging it & trying something made up using my limited theory. when the wem copycat kicked in it was like..woah...what was that! the online access to learning is staggering these days. (you are such a great teacher & player..& i recommend you to the g. curious) . i do like blues, rock, punk, & rock n roll but the web is drenched with play like "insert name" endless photo fit pentatoic blues by numbers. i dunno, my advice to the young uns would be,learn the basics and then spread your wings. refreshing to see this mate. the eels! thats how to write a blues song that dont need a solo. nice one.
First time I’ve seen your videos and just wanted to tell you what a wonderful time I had watching you doing it. I hope I can reach a decent level one day soon. From Texas, thanks a lot Adrian !
I'm not sure if the rhythm is a bit tricky as I've never taught anyone but how about Cemetry Gates by The Smiths. From memory that's all open chords. And it's very good. 😁
I completely agree with your list. I wanna be your dog was one of the first riffs I learnt and still enjoy playing it to this day. I’m also glad to see some Jesus and Mary Chain on the list; whenever I hear Just Like Honey it makes me think of the end scene from Lost in Translation. Great video as usual 👍
Yes, like the idea for top 10 beginner's solos. And you're right its a Wurlitzer. Had it for ages, there was just no room for it in my old room. Can be heard on all my albums.
The Dandy Warhols! Love your taste in music Adrian. My fav guitar channel now! This and Sonic Youth on another vid...you've got me! I'm not a beginner by a long stretch but I really enjoy your videos and the song selection, I mean Link Wray!?!! Alright!! Keep up the great work! Cheers from Louisiana 🤘🎸
Thanks, and yes, of course I love Van the man! I teach Brown Eyed Girl all the time, I just wanted to show that there's life beyond all the usual beginner songs...
Loved 1, lost me a bit, but love 8, 9, & 10. “I Wanna Be Your Dog” was also one of the first 5 songs I’d learned. “Just What I Needed” by The Cars was one of the early songs I learned with power chords.

One of the first songs I learnt was ‘Dark entries’ by Bauhaus. Super simple riff and sounds great!
What? No Hendrix? 😜
I couple I liked when starting out were "Animal Instinct" by the Cranberries and "Find the river" by REM. They have some Cadd9 and Dsus chords but I think that still counts as beginner friendly. Maybe only small-a "alternative" though :)
Yes, good songs. Pretty sure that they could qualify as alternative!
Note to the beginners:
Don’t learn the “common beginner songs” only learn songs you like

1 Walk on the wild side 2:25
2 I like birds 2:48
3 I am trying to break your heart 4:48
4 The goldheart mountaintop queen directory 6:03
5 Sin city 7:16

7 Just like honey 8:59
8 Rumble 10:24
9 Human fly 11:51
10 I wanna be your dog 12:57
Of course you guess my favorites ...
May I suggest an intense power chord practice with "Army life" by the Exploited
Thanks man!
hey man 'i like birds' is not at 2:48...it's at 4:00
sorry - thanks for the correction
I reckon, 'Alternative' by the Exploited considering it's alternative songs.
What pedal did he use on that cramps song ?
Theeeee best teacher thus far. I paused the video at 2 mins to tell you that. No bar chords no F chords. I love you man.
Hmm a video on how to not die in guitars stores for introverts would be helpful
LURK KARTMAN3XY online shopping, friend!
HONESTLY
Even the bloody staff want to make you die with embarrassment!
Brishna Cohen Strikes Again

Thanks, I was looking for some easy no-so-common grunge songs to play 😁
i love them but all there songs have crapy different tuning and there sort of hard to sing
On the trail Mac mills MTB yeah isn’t love buzz in some crazy tuning or something?
versnellingspookie Nevermind is more of a beginner friendly album to play along, that’s how i learn to play the guitar. 😉
@@versaille7549 no. It's standard tuning lol. As far as I know the album only has standard and drop d variations like a step down or half-step down
Most important: No wonderwall :)
Maybe.
Vulture 38 you’re gonna be the one that saves me
Mark Watkins and after all
Wonderwall is an amazing song my guy.
One of them you need to have in you locker because everyone asks for it. Especially in the uk
You have the best taste out of all teachers on RUclips! Sincere thanks! 🤘🏻

The Cramps rule! RIP Lux, Bryan and Nick
Same here lol!. If you're into the Cramps you have good taste. Period
Snap. I'm just starting and Human Fly and Whip It are my 2 song Im trying to learn first.
Awesome song choices. You are by far my favorite RUclips guitar teacher. You have the coolest taste in music. Keep the great songs rolling.
You're too kind, pleased you've been enjoying my videos!
Every beginner's electric guitar kit should come with a fuzz pedal.
I dont even have an amp with mine and been self teaching for a few months now :-)
amen
And a Marshall stack
Overdirve cover more ı would say
Buying a Boss DS-1 or a cheap EHX pedal and dialing it in definetly helps with getting a decent sound out of a cheap setup. Learning how to use the amps EQ also helps!
An F chord in a beginner’s song is absolute crazy business.

Yep I can't even play F after 3 or 4 months trying to learn guitar..
@@scottcalloway4630 what do you mean by "play it Barre tho" ? What is that?

A man after my own heart with what constitutes a beginners song - great! No F, Barre and no speed! Well done

my best wins over the years were just winging it & trying something made up using my limited theory.
when the wem copycat kicked in it was like..woah...what was that!
the online access to learning is staggering these days. (you are such a great teacher & player..& i recommend you to the g. curious) .
i do like blues, rock, punk, & rock n roll but the web is drenched with play like "insert name"
endless photo fit pentatoic blues by numbers.
i dunno, my advice to the young uns would be,learn the basics and then spread your wings.
refreshing to see this mate.
the eels! thats how to write a blues song that dont need a solo.
nice one.
Haha, stooges, ace, first song I taught my wife , then girlfriend , 27 years ago on guitar. With feedback too, that did make laugh. Thanks Adrian.
That's so crude lol
First time I’ve seen your videos and just wanted to tell you what a wonderful time I had watching you doing it. I hope I can reach a decent level one day soon.
From Texas, thanks a lot Adrian !
I'm not sure if the rhythm is a bit tricky as I've never taught anyone but how about Cemetry Gates by The Smiths. From memory that's all open chords. And it's very good. 😁
eldritch1501 Ooh i would say rhythm very tricky!
love the smiths johnny was a very fast strummer
I completely agree with your list. I wanna be your dog was one of the first riffs I learnt and still enjoy playing it to this day. I’m also glad to see some Jesus and Mary Chain on the list; whenever I hear Just Like Honey it makes me think of the end scene from Lost in Translation.
Great video as usual 👍
Thanks. Yes, such a good soundtrack to that film!
What fuzz pedal was used here ? Just perfect
A good beginners song to learn is "Used to Love Her", all it is, is D A and G chord with a DDUUDU strumming pattern
Loved this. Not a beginner at the moment but always fun to learn new songs.
Molly's Lips is a nice easy song for beginners and fun to sing along to.
Happy to see your video on alternative rock...nicely done! Thanks for sharing.
Great idea for a lesson and a good choice! How about "Top 10 Alternative Beginner Solos" to follow?
Fender Rhodes cool new acquisition?
It's a Wurli not a Fender. And I'm desperate to hear it!
Yes, like the idea for top 10 beginner's solos. And you're right its a Wurlitzer. Had it for ages, there was just no room for it in my old room. Can be heard on all my albums.
Oh yeah, I totally forgot that it was new video day! Thank you for keeping these coming!
Killer song list man! Lou Reed was brilliant!
Great stuff! Loved the end too. Van the man should never be underrated.
Thanks, and yes, of course I love Van the man! I teach Brown Eyed Girl all the time, I just wanted to show that there's life beyond all the usual beginner songs...
Roadrunner by Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers - A D E
The Way by Fastball - Capo 2 Em Am B7 D G C
Great voice, excellent lesson. Thank you for a refreshing beginners lesson. Mighty fine sounding/looking guitar.
Not even kidding. Immediately liked and subscribed as soon as Eels were mentioned.
My favourite band ❤️
It really helped to know also other alternative songs, and best for beginner guitar , peace brother 🤘
Your videos are very pleasant and understandibly clear. I'm glad I saw this one! Thank you.
Why do I get the impression this video could have been six hours long? I could have watched just to see where your mind goes next. NICE LIST!
Love your video themes/ideas and song picks, they're fresh and original
These are great. Thanks for putting this together.
I thought I was a beginner, but when you said there will be no F chord I realised I may not be one
I said to my son... you play ‘smoke on the water’ and I’m selling your guitar! These songs will be great for him to start with.
Great Lesson. Inspirational. I'll go and get my guitar👍🎸😁
You had me at Wilco! Thanks, mate!
I'm glad I sat through the first 9! 10 is worth it!
Lol! Stephen Merchant you got me good! What a killer bit. I had no idea you could play such killer music.
Loved 1, lost me a bit, but love 8, 9, & 10. “I Wanna Be Your Dog” was also one of the first 5 songs I’d learned. “Just What I Needed” by The Cars was one of the early songs I learned with power chords.
my favorite guitar channel! thanks great lesson
Ending on brown eyed girl 🤣 Well done, vintage Adrian 👍
YOU ARE A FANTASTIC TEACHER.
Good to see that Ned Schneebly came back to rock'n'rolling! I hope you dumped Patty. Keep on rockin' man! I salute you!
You're a good bloke ...Love your channel.
