  • Stressed teens relax with knit and crochet club, build social skills and friendships. Club goals and activities help teach school curriculum and real-world entrepreneurship.
The CYC Learn to Knit Initiative features a high school knitting and crochet club that is so much more. Interviews with teachers, students, and parent volunteers reveal how these skills help build confidence, a sense of accomplishment and friendships among students from vast backgrounds. Also discussed is how the club goals for fundraising translate to the teaching curriculum in math and family/consumer science, enhance school spirit, and inspire community and charity outreach. I was born in Glasgow Scotland, and it was law that Girls and Boys learned to knit. Probably in grade two or three. It was the most wonderful thing to happen to me as a little Girl. Today at age 82 my hands are busy every day. Now with COVID I can’t go out. All I can say is, I was blessed to have a wonderful teacher, because if she hadn’t taught me to knit, I would have gone insane by now...so now everyday I get up, do my chores, and get settled down with my knitting. ( It’s pure heaven ) Thanks to that lovely teacher starting that knitting knitting club, and seeing all these lovely little Ladies faces looking so happy and proud of their work. It’s just something you never forget. Just watched a video of a very clever Lady knitting with one arm she lost to Cancer. It would be great for you Girls to see. I came upon it by accident. If kids see this amazing Lady, they’d never give up. Happy knitting Ladies. ❤️🇨🇦

My grandfather, who was from Scotland, knit his own socks because his feet were so large he couldn't get store bought socks that fit, and with the fact that my grandmother had 8 kids by the time she was 24, there was no one to knit his socks for him. My grandmother did knitting and sewing (on a treadle) for most of the family. They taught me to knit at 5. A real blessing, to be sure.

Some knitters in hot summer in Spain knitted huge “blankets” and strung them across hot city streets, cooling the place tourists shop.
