Chargebacks are the worst!!! I remember whenever I would overhear the receptionist paging our in house sales person that a department store was on the phone, inevitably I'd hear her mutter curse words while running to the phone.

Hey Zoe, just wanted to mention that I have worked as a showrep even though I honestly never enjoyed it. It was part of my school curriculum, but it allowed me to experience the business side in fashion. It was so bad that I started becoming anxious and stressed bc the showroom I was interning for carried 6 different lines with like 70+ garments in each line and we had to memorize sales date, turn around, code #, prints, best sellers, describe the item to the buyer, present the line in a particular fashion, etc. and the worst part was dealing with snobby clients or having the owner of the showroom breathing behind your back to make sure you fulfilled their expectations.. I didn't really consider myself ideal for the job, but I was offered a job to my surprise a few weeks from interning with them lol and even worked at the WWIN show in Vegas. At the end of it all, I was able to break that timid/shyness side of me when I was put out there, so I guess all that stress paid off somehow bc I got to experience a small glimpse of what it's like to be a showrep. Long story short, I left the job and went back to visit just recently. i was asked to work and attend WWIN show in Vegas this February, but i kindly rejected the offer as I'm mainly into fashion design/ pattern making/ and looking into having my own line someday and could definitely use some of those showrep skills I've learned throughout the way. At this point in time, i'm trying to improve my pattern making skills/sewing/ my overall confidence, but more thn anything learn as much as possible from people in the industry. I feel like people like myself that don't have the money to pay a designer/pattern maker/ sample maker, etc it is crucial to understand and be able to do these things on your own in order to make it in this industry. In all honesty, I've learned a lot more from you and your videos, without the need to intern my time for free in order to be given some helpful info/insight in fashion... so I'd like to give you a big THANK YOU & a virtual hug for that. For every video I watch on your channel, my confidence/knowledge has been growing more & more to the extent that I feel closer thn ever to reaching my dreams on having my own line someday soon. You are the real deal, that part about buyers not caring about ethnic stuff sealed it for me... it's true, the other day I saw in my country how the "sharks" of crap sales started selling indigenous vegetal fiber hats with a nasty sticker in the front and a lousy synthetic cord to hold it to your head and branded it as "sombrero playero": they didn't even bother on giving any credit to the indigenous people that trade with these hats (they produce lots and lots of stuff but no one cares).

Since working with wholesalers is such a tough business for small designers, would it be a good idea to still take advantage of this option by having a small/capsule collection? So that way the contract is temporary, the exposure is still there and both parties will still be selling a lot of merchandise. Is that a real option with department stores? Just came across your channel yesterday and instantly subscribed! love your videos and how informative and in-depth you are! Have a great one! x
Typically, a sales contract is only good for one collection so the size of the collection doesn't matter in that regard. And buyers don't buy whole collections. They pick whatever pieces they want and in different quantities per SKU. There are other reasons to keep collections small when first starting.

You rent a retail space for a short time, set up shop, and run the store like you normally would, preferably with tons of marketing and events to get people in the door. You just need a place that will rent out for a short time.
