KIA e-Soul - It's Electric! (ENG) - First Test Drive and Review

- KIA e-Soul is the third generation of the Korean automaker's urban crossover. After two generations KIA withdrew the car from Europe, but now it returns as an EV, along with Hyundai Kona Electric and KIA e-Niro. KIA e-Soul comes with 39 or 64 kWh batteries. The former give KIA e-Soul 289 km range, and the latter more than 450 km. Are these claims realistic?
Starting price: 34 000 euro

400Km range is (almost) sufficient here in Greece even for a big trip. In the city, it's a week's range or more!
Nice review!
I just bought a 2020 Soul EV Limited and will take delivery on June 24th.
Nice to see an English review as I have watched many of your Polish ones.
I got Soul 30kwh version which in fact is 30kwh and 30kwh usable.
On silly days I was challenging myself taking it from my house in Corby to Stanstead and back to drop of my father in law.
Managed to get back with 1% on the dashboard crawling and annoying everyone around but this is 235km done in a single charge in a rain, traffic on M11 near Cambridge and cruising 60-65mph (96-105kwh) on A14 Kettering - Huntingdon and M11 Cambridge to Stanstead.
I consider it as a great result as the car seems to have no aerodynamics but really it's not as bad as it looks (I have been tailgating some National Coach buses but hey how wanted to get home without stopping ; D).
So 235km when KIA dashboard said 175km in the morning is really good (well above my expectations).
I like this about the car as many manufacturers in nowadays simply state rubbish claims like 3.5l/100km consumption and than I drive that car on my holiday and it uses 6l/100km on average which is pretty sour when you expect nearly half of that.
Most of people feel kind of cheated by this sort of stupid claims by mainstream manufacturers.
Yes Marek, I consider 400km range to be sufficient. And I can confirm it since I drive an EV and my yearly milage exceeds 80.000km. I drive a X 100D.
wow! How much of that is done utilizing Tesla's Supercharger network?
I've had my Soul EV since 2017, I love it!
What range do you get out of it after two years?
Marek Drives originally rated at 93 miles for a full charge. This morning it read 97 miles. In warmer weather, it goes as high as 105 miles. During winter, I've seen it as low as 70 miles. I am in New York, so temperatures vary greatly season to season. But for me, this is my commuting car. My commute is 30 miles round trip. I look forward to my next car having higher range, but I do enjoy the reduced fuel cost, not to mention much less maintenance.
One summer day, the range read 104 miles. I drove for 104 miles (52 miles each way) and it still showed 13 miles when I arrived home. I try to maximize mileage with my driving habits.
Your so fortunate to have a 'tripod' that bounces around, hope you weren't boasting! Think I'm going to ditch my new Peugeot 3008 next year and purchase Soul ev. Incidentally my beloved informs me that with an electric soul I might pass through the pearly gates.

Thanks for watching!
checking back to see if Marek is seeing the future? Lets see... watching the video now.
I still find it highly impressive how you film the same review in both English and Polish
Thanks :)
Great review! I think the e-Niro seems more practical and have a much nicer interior.
J B I would recommend to sit inside both. I test drove the niro 3 days ago and I have the soul second gen and it feels cheaper then the soul.
@Marek , if I may say a wish: when you test electric cars in the future, please always keep an eye on the sound insulation, because electric cars are sometimes bad at this, means: you enjoy on the one hand the lack of the engine noises but at motorways and 130 km/h it gets nastily loud from wind and tires, because the cars often are purely insulated. (Good example: Tesla Model S is okay but not really good, but Model 3 is really quite bad), so I always would like your valuation on this point (at motorway speed) because it's interesting to hear it from different people.
This was a launch event, so not much time to evaluate everything. Later I drove e-Niro, which was generally OK, and the Kona Electric, which was rather poorly sound insulated. I will be reviewing the e-Soul again in November, so I'll make sure to listen out for any wind or road noise.
@@MarekDrives Thanks!!!
Glad to see you Re testing many electrics.. We won't get this one here for another few weeks.. Pricing here is a little high.. 7k above Nissan Leaf with same size battery..
400 km or almost 250 mi is plenty for me for daily commute and shopping after work in Los Angeles.
The charge cycles are not really a problem these days. More than the speed of charging, batteries don't like getting too hot. That is not a problem with these cars which have proper active cooling of the battery packs.
There are some Tesla's which were used as Taxis, 300k km, primarily charged at Superchargers, still at more than 90% of the original capacity.
key word is some.... there are some ppl that live to be over 100yrs old too...
Yeah, 400km range is more then enough for a daily driver. The problem is that I don't live in a hour, I live in an apartment block and that makes it very hard for me or anyone else in the same situation to charge the car. Top that with being in a country that has maybe 200 charging stations all over, most of them in major cities and we'll see why I wouldn't buy one. Other then that I personally like it very much and should the circumstances be different I would definitely buy one.
Hour=House.
I heard there was a performance version on the way; the R-Soul...I'll see myself out...
or P-Soul
How is the performance version not electric? Boggles my mind every time a car company advertises the performance version and it is not electric. Everyone knows EVs are expensive and have crazy performance. Why not use electric drive-train in a car that is the top of the line version since it is expected to cost more anyways?
400Km seems like plenty of range to me - It would be unusual for me to want more than 250Km in one day and on the rare occasion I need closer to the limit I would be happy to factor in charging stop(s). Now we just need decent availability rather than the current situation in UK of put down a deposit and wait for 1 year or more!
400 km range would be more than enough for me. I live in a condominium neighbourhood and we've just installed wallboxes with the IEC Type 2 connectors meaning to fully charge the car would take just 6 hours. But the price is still out of reach. It needs to go down 20% minimum.
I only dislike that battery pack hanging down under the chassis, i keep thinking that the battery is very vulnerable.
Great review. I now understand why we can’t get Korean electrics in North America. In addition to battery shortages, EU regulations are forcing the supply to EU instead of NA. I can’t believe Kia did not offer Soul in recent years; it seems like perfect EU car in both size and style.
It was too expensive, too small trunk, inefficient engines, not crossover enough :-)
They sold about 100k units in 10 years in Europe.
Electric Kona and Niro presented in USA, isn't? What you really missing, its diesels Hyundai and Kia, as well as any other brands
You can find them but you have to search far and wide.. Like nationwide
In this country U.S.A. 322 is more kilometers than most drivers would drive in a single day. Dav
Just emotionally - great looking car!
450 km is a good range. I drive 20-50 miles a day depending on whether I need to shop after work.
Any updates? Had the 1st Gen Soul EV... great car. Was hoping for the Next Gen to come to the States... so sad... how is it doing in the markets where it's selling. I always thought it was better than the Niro... what do those who have the choice think? Any problems?
It looks good but I live on the top floor of a block of flats so overnight /home charging is going to be tricky!
Very good Review, thank you.
450km range as the e-niro reach, is enough for me. af few times a year i need to drive 700 at one day, but a break halfway, with some coffee dosn't matter.
Compared to tesla and vw, the missing app support is a big issue.
The biggest problem for now, is the ability to pull a trailer. I often use a trailer, for large stuff, og garden trash, so i would not hurt the interior.
Just specs. We know them already! How was it to drive? How silent is it? Comfort? Suspension?
I think the main problem is not the range itself, but charging times and battery weight as car manufacturers compete for range and battery capacity. Instead, R&D should be directed towards replacing battery packs at the gas stations as slide out empty & slide in fully charged. If you have a range of around 100km on each pack, it is more than enough, if replacing battery pack takes 3 minutes. As it is today, trying to equip every parking space with charging points, I can't see fully electric future. A big problem, as always, would be to get car manufacturers to make battery packs universal fit, but that's another story...
Battery replacement was tested a few years ago by some Israeli startup, and then Tesla announced it at some stage. In both cases attempts failed, because of the cost of infrastructure and logistics problem.
A battery replacement station (probably along side a regular petrol station) would need to stock several dozen charged batteries at all times to ensure they can offer a full replacement any time. This place would use significant amount of power to quickly recharge let's say 5-10 batteries at a time. And then you need some sort of automatic, say a tunnel resembling an automatic carwash, where a robot can replace the battery underneath the car within 5 minutes tops. Otherwise a traffic jam would form. Car number 12 will still have to wait an HOUR!!!
And now let's assume cars have different batteries. Capacity doesn't matter, but shape does. Some cars stack extra cells in the place where a transmission tunnel would be in a traditional car, others make flat packs, and in some cases the battery pack is actually an integral part of the vehicle structure ensuring rigidity, and that means replacing the pack needs to be done very carefully. Not to mention the usual sealing, etc.
Too big an operation for now, when there is no single battery standard.
400Ks - great I WILL purchase one ****WHEN**** they eventually become available in AUSTRALI
400 km is more enough time in India.
Looks better with the gt-line styling.
That's true!.
Would be great to compare electrics Soul, Niro and Kona...
I'll get there.
Kona's a bit bland inside and rear legroom is poor. eNiro much better, but UK spec skimps with non-LED headlights.
400km is probably excessive for my usage. I've driven a fair bit, by my standards, in the past 3 weeks, and I've only gone about 200km. So at 400km, I'd be hauling around an oversized battery most of the time. I would love to see a little more customization when it comes to battery size.
Buy it used after the battery degrades... from someone that needs a 400km range...
I guess the 10% difference has more to do with charging losses which are included in the consumption figure.
When will you review the new Corolla? :)
In due time.
Next pls Peugeot 208 Electric ! :)
Waiting for the ruggedised R-Soul.
Give me two!
Can somebody measure EMF(electromagnetic field) levels during acceleration please. We were able to test-drive E-Soul at Kia's factory in Gwangju but we were not able to accelerate, thus still unable to make up our minds. At a slow speed EMF is roughly normal, but it could jump during an acceleration like in Chevy Volt.
2:22 prices
I like watch this video, because I learn english language.
Pozdrawiam 😊
What do you think is better soul ev or vw ID3 ?
I like the Soul as a car, so I may be somewhat biased. I understand what VW has done with the new platform, and how it's going to open new possibilities, but for now the ID.3 brought nothing new to the table. Except for the new electronics, which seem to be a work in progress. That being said, the KIA e-Soul was (at the time of filming, and still is) rather expensive, for what it offers other than range.
So to sum up: if you can find one really cheap (like a dealer demo car or something) I'd seriously consider it. If I had to spend around 40k sticker price, I'd look at the IONIQ 5 and the upcoming EV6. More car for not much more money.
The issue for me is not the 400k, it's the price upfront and the sparse infrastructure. Less moving parts can only be a good thing and certainly that almost instant torque is a plus .
Out of curiosity, where are you from?
@@MarekDrives I'm Irish, live in Dublin and Munich 60/40
@R Mac It doesn't seem so bad according to plugshare.com
@@MarekDrives Stick to main roads, plan correctly and have a very expensive terminal installed at your home and even at this you are restricted, of course, as I mentioned there are the upfront costs. I know, I know, first world problems, my point is I am interested in electric but cost and restrictions influence my decision making.
@R Mac Sure, it's still an early adopter (call it fanboy) hobby, but I recall Mitsubishi iMiEV (/Peugeot iOn/Citroen C-Zero), which looked like tin on wheels, and could do 80-100 km on a good day. Today for about the same price you can drive for 300-400 km in a regular car.
The range is just about perfect. For most people that's almost two week's motoring - so more than enough for daily use and great for the occasional trip where the range is longer than "full bladder time" so there's no problem if the charger you'd planned to use is dead with having to go 15/20k to the next one.
It's the looks!
The old Soul had to be one of the ugliest cars ever on the UK market. I'm waiting to see if a new one actually looks better in the real world.
Does this car have more interior too than the e-niro or the Kona?
I would say they are all comparable, especially now that the Soul got bigger.
❤😍👍Nice love KIA👍😍❤
So charging cycles still seem to be an EV problem for purchase choice.
I drove the previous Soul over 3 winters, having to fastcharge every day in the winter to get home. After 95 000 kilometers, the car was tested for state of health. It was still around 99% He is making the problem bigger than it is. I also had the car stand for long times with 100% charge and under 10% charge.
400 km is plenty. I drive on average 90 km per day. This means I would not even have to plug the car in every night. And, how cheap are old ICE cars going to be? If you have the parking space, just buy an ICE car for long trips when you are not want to charge your EV. I just bought a 2002 merc 200 kompressor for couple thousand euro (and this is Finland our cars are taxed like hell). Perfect for longer drives. Costs practically nothing to insure and use, as insurance and taxes are only for the time when I use it, which is going to be a few days a year after I pick up my next ev. Glad to see Marek is seeing the light. Of course, initially EVs are going to be much more popular for people who have a house and can have the wallbox charger. Condo residents change slower over the next 10 years. by 2030, only a crazy person will buy a gas powered, non chargeable car. Thats how it is going to be, deal with it. Plus, you are going to love the maintenance on the EVs. What is there to do - brake fluids every 4 years? Cabin air filters you can change yourself.
The version with the smaller battery has less power as well.
Will they launch an autonomous version called an a-soul? #sorry
MK KM Kia Souless
500 Km in real life in the summer
$ 34,000 for a city driver only car?
Actually I got about 450 km on a single charge out of it on a road trip, so it's only city.
64 kWh per charge for 400 km. In Australia energy is around 38c / kWh that's A$24.32 per fill up.
16kWh per 100km. travelled is A$6.08 per 100 km
My 10 year old Kia Rio uses 5L/100km in Australia A$1.30 Litre. or A$6.50 per 100 km.
Plus it will travel over 500 km on a tank of fuel and I can refill and be back on the road in under 5 minutes.
yeah/nah, I'll keep burning dinosaur oil.
How much do you drive? If you're topping up the battery nightly then charging time doesn't matter. You'll save more time from not having to fill up.
Australia tax that fossil juice
@@AhuizotlXiuh In Australia battery cars are around $50,000 - $60,000 I can buy a lot of fuel for that, or I could buy three new petrol engine cars of similar size.
The economics are just not there
@@tcakes6635 They do already, nearly 60% of our fuel price is government tax. People don't realise how big Australia is, countries like Sweden, or Norway would fit in one corner. Australia is about the same size as the USA, but with only a fraction of the population, in the country it's quite usual to drive 200+ km and not see a village at all.
@@rayg9069 er i had notice Australia is big so you would drive further all the more reason to discourage fossil fuels … ask musk to help you again...
Range is fine, availability isn't!! Kia/Hyundai failing badly on producing EV's to meet demand. UK waiting list for Kona & Niro at least 12 months.
It seems to be a major issue with most ev manufacturers at the moment , apart from forward thinking Tesla! It seems to be lithium is the main problem ,the sooner they find an alternative the better !
Kia soul back is not good looking e car.

@@MarekDrives I think you're great
ill buy that for a dollar
looks even more horrible than the old one! brrrrrrr! I need to put my sun glasses on to watch this review!
400km would be sufficient if it is 400 REAL kilometers at REAL motorway speeds using a commuter travel pattern, rather than 400 WLTP kilometers which comes down to maybe 250 REAL kilometers.
And that's the very real problem with EVs still, they may according to their WLTP rating get 400+ kilometers, but in reality barely go over 200. Which in my case would mean needing to charge the car for 5-6 hours twice a day (hoping there's an available charging station both near my place of work and where I live, which isn't currently the case as I can't park on my own terrain (so can't have a private charging station) and the closest public station is about 5km away in a paid underground car park.
Tesla does not even make EPA range in alex autos kona and niro is better and the soul has the same motor and battery.
Still too expensive.
