I graduated high school in 1975, the year that the album “Timeless” was released. The next year “Sargasso Sea” came out. Discovering these two albums, discovering what music could be, helped me to find a path for myself. The myriad musical connections that grew from there are too many to recount, but the journey still continues to this day.

A great musicians for a master piece. Thanks for this. Towner still is a maestro in his 80'. Abercrombie was a big innovator. Bravo.

I had the good fortune to study with John Abercrombie at the Naropa Institute in Boulder, Co. I moved to Colorado in the summer of '81 specifically to take a class which was taught by Ralph Towner every year at Naropa but that particular year Ralph was unavailable and John Abercrombie subbed for him. Requiescat In Pace Maestro.

I also had the very good fortune to study with John when he was living in San Francisco with his girlfriend Lisa (who I believe he later married). This was in the '80's (around the time of this video recording as a matter of fact). I have a funny Timeless story to pass along. During one of my lessons I mentioned to John how much I enjoyed his song, Timeless. He wrote it out for me, but he inadvertently misspelled the title. He wrote, "Timless." So, it's now been some 35-40 years, and I still refer to this song as Timless. It's always tickled me because when I first met John (at a small club in Saratoga, or at a clinic at De Anza Jr. college?? I can't remember), I was with a fellow young guitar player, named Tim - much better than I. We both met John and eventually took some lessons. I always think of my buddy Tim when I hear this song. RIP to my dear friend John. He was such a sweet man. I remember John, during a break at a gig with his Quartet at Keystone Korner in SF that Tim and I were at, he came out to say hello to us at the back of the club and asked our opinion on how he sounded. I remember being floored that this incredible talent was such a nice guy and so humble as to really care about our opinions.
