Thank God there are musicians who would rather starve than not play real music. And what a blessing John Abercrombie was to the world of music (same for all involved with this piece). His compositions were just outstanding. Thank you, Manfred Eicher and ECM for making so much wonderful music available to us all.

I saw Jan Garbarek at the Montreal jazz festival back in the 90's.
It was magical. I guess he was promoting his STAR album at the time. Same lineup.
I've seen a lot of concerts in my time but this was the best. I floated out of the theater after the performance.
I would jump at the chance to see him again.

The spectacular alchemy that occurs every time Ralph and John play together never fails to amaze me.
Their duet inside this tune is just another example.
    Thanks for this.

Garbarek and Towner had a very special musical connection. We have a number of recordings documenting it, I wish there were more. Vasconcelos was wonderful everywhere he appeared. Abercrombie seems to me the odd one out here, even though he was a great guitar player and it's his beautiful song.

John Laird Abercrombie (December 16, 1944 - August 22, 2017) was an American jazz guitarist. His work explored jazz fusion, free jazz, and avant-garde jazz. Abercrombie studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He was known for his understated style and his work with organ trios.

This is a live recording from Hamburg, Germany back in 1978. There are two more musicians, John Abercrombie on electric guitar and Nana Vaconcelos playing percussion, as was already mentioned.
It is the second song from a great album:
    ruclips.net/video/b_dlPgZhyQ8/видео.html.
There are two duos by John and Ralph in this song interrupted by Jan´s great solo on his soprano sax.
In the first one John´s play around his tune is so delicate and Towner supports with incredible backing harmonies. In the second one now Ralph gets really the best his ten fingers on the twelve strings can master and John is backing... och, lovely, stunning, chills.
No wonder that John and Ralph did two great records as a duo on ECM, Sargossa Sea (1976) and Five Years Later.

Thank you for this elaboration. I would also recommend the collaborations of Towner and the great vibraphonist Gary Burton, not to mention the original Solstice album with Towner, Garbarek, Eberhard Weber and Joh Christensen.
