max has a built in tool like this called bitmap proxy its under common tab on renderer floating panel , you can resize your textures to quarter, half etc and can automatically relink your maps to the new path with reduce bitmap size. but the way i see what you can do to elevate your script/plugin is to have an option to selected object only because max's native bitmap proxy tool dont have that option... may you find this humble opinion useful..
cant find the edit button on my phone, reason why it would be nice to have an option to selected objects because not all the time you get a model with all its textures are large, last time i used bitmap proxy because i got an assets from the pipe with huge textures along with the assets with not so heavy textures so what i had to do is to save selected the heavy assets then bitmap proxy it. then merge it to the rest of the file. but if you have the option to selected only then you dont go throug all the hastle thats why corona renderer have this great tool convert objects material into corona material but with selected only in vray you cant do that...
yes you are right, this works for the viewport, for the GPU of RAM, but it does not save RAM, because a large original is loaded there, you can reduce the consumption of RAM on rendering if you reduce the resolution of textures on objects that are far from the camera , this will allow you to reduce the consumption of RAM and slightly increase the speed of rendering

@@Capeau I agree, the demonstration may not show all the benefits of the plugin, in the demonstration we are shown one example and a tool, and how to use it we should think for ourselves I see a lot of help in saving RAM in large and complex scenes, maybe they should have paid more attention to this feature, instead of showing acceleration of the viewport
yeah thats what i always do if i have 20k textures for aerial views of a city scenes.. and sometimes if not needed the textures in viewport just use object color display.... i'd rather buy some useful scripts and there are big and very useful script for free that I think way way more useful.than this for example collect assets, Attach, and so on.
@@arberry3D я думаю плагин будет очень полезен, часто бывает накидаешь людишек в сцену, а у них текстурки под 8к, рама неожиданно впритык, людишки где то там в дали, зачем им 8к? зачем столько оперативки тратить на то, чего не видно, выделил людей или еще что то второстепенное, снизил разрешение текстур, визульно хуже не стало, а памяти освободилось прилично. Думаю будет очень полезно, сейчас все в 4-8к, а порой и больше, оперативка расходуется крайне быстро

You can improve your viewport and render with high resolution of textures. So i think this plugin is better than bitmap proxy in 3dsMax.
