Thanks for checking out another grand piano review by Stu Harrison and Merriam Pianos! In this video we’re going to cover C. Bechstein Europe’s P162, produced under the W. Hoffmann Professional brand. It’s a baby grand with massive musical range, a clear precise tone, fluid and expertly-prepared action, and an attractive and unique silver colour scheme. Welcome to our review channel, and we hope you enjoy our take on the W. Hoffmann P162!
    Background:
The W. Hoffmann Professional series along with their Tradition series are both highly regarded all-European grand pianos that offer a high-value alternative to the more expensive German pianos. They differ from the Tradition in subtle ways, but nonetheless important to mention. They use different hammer and voicing styles, different plates (and therefore also slightly different scale designs) as well as different bridge designs. The result is a sound which is more focused on bell-like attack and long-sustaining trebles, and less focused on warmth and some of the darker tones that the Traditional series draws.
The instruments are the most expensive in the W. Hoffmann lineup, and represent both a materials quality and manufacturing process which is incredibly close to that of the Academy Bechstein line.
    Action:
The P162 uses Bechstein’s “Silver Line” of actions, an action essentially of the same geometry of to the Gold Action, but with lesser quality materials on parts like back-checks, center-pins, hammers, bushings, and less voicing and regulation. It’s a beautifully fluid action with virtually no sense of the mechanics behind it, and achieves a satisfying balance between power and sensitivity. It feels more shallow than the Japanese pianos, and definitely gives the sensation of a lighter touch as well (though when measuring it out it’s low to mid 50g’s).
    Sound:
The P162 is an intimate sound that feels like it surrounds you and whispers in your ear. It’s a delicate instrument that’s balanced from bass to treble better than virtually any other baby grand in this price category. It has a bell-tone attack with a light bloom in the mid and upper mid range. The treble is clear, sustaining, and delicate. The break from the steel tri-chords to the bass is nicely managed, and the instrument is considerably brighter in tone than the Tradition series of similar size.
    Cabinet / Features:
The bridge on the P162 has some interesting contouring to it, which is accented with black paint and impossible to miss. It also has duplex scale, capped maple bridges, beech / maple rims, solid Austrian white spruce soundboard, and a distinctive silver plate and nickle accents. The instrument is ONLY available in Ebony Polish and the silver tones, it can’t be ordered in brass or in any other wood finish.

Every Hoffman Professional series I’ve heard and played has blown my mind. This one is no exception. The largest upright sounds and plays nearly identical to the Bechstein Model 8 and that piano is a whole different price class. No it is not as incredible, but it is still incredible and if you didn’t hear them side by side, I doubt you could tell the difference.

Hi, Stu, comparing to the p line, does the Tradition line offer the similar treble tones? Thanks. Tim

Hey Tim, I actually find the Tradition to be a warmer, more mid-range tone than the Professional, which seems designed to accentuate the upper partials. I actually find a lot of similarity between Kawai's older RX line and the Hoffmann Tradition in terms of their tonal profile.

Hi I'm curious what it would cost for this piano? I'm local to Toronto and really interested
    Thanks

Hey Jeffrey - thanks for the question, they are lovely. We have actually shifted our focus to the Hoffmann Tradition series, which is the same quality but a slightly warmer sound and the brass colouring vs nickel. However, we can still get the Professional series in of course. Feel free to come into either showroom to check them out, and you can write me direct at sharrison@merriammusic.com. For pricing, you can check this page for a decent guideline: www.pianobuyer.com/brand/bechstein-c/ - Thanks Jeffrey, we hope to meet you in person, and have a great weekend. -stu
