The most perfect tenor vocal technique of all time! Never has any man perfected mask singing to such a degree, or sung so perfectly idiomatic in so many languages! Born with a beautiful tone, but Novikova transformed him from the 1950's to late 60's. Such a beautiful gift for phrasing/shaping phrases, too. Listen to his Philadelphia Bellini with Sutherland for the most visceral singing on record!! It's electric!
One can the try greats. A lovely distinctive voice with a superb technique and effortless top. Luckily I heard his farewell Covent Garden concert. He sang in 4 or 5 languages perfectly and gave a retrospective of his great roles. A unique artist. The simply don’t make them like that anymore.
Gedda singt Wunderlich ! Gedda was one of the best tenors in his time, indeed. and his repertoire was astounding great, singing in at least 7 languages.
Gedda is really in a class of his own in terms of language facility & musicality. His timbre, beautiful as it is, may fall a bit short of Bjorling, Simoneau or Wunderlich but he exceeded them in terms of variety of repertoire & how he handled everything from Bach, Lieder, Donizetti, Mozart even some Puccini & Verdi. His voice also lasted into his 70’s for I heard him in Hamburg in recital in January 1998 when he was close to 73 & he sounded remarkable. He was always a lyric tenor so I am NOT comparing him to spinto or dramatic voices but only within the vocal category that he adhered to throughout his career. Certainly among tenor singers of the century his position remains absolutely unique.
precise and clean voice detailed by best schooled PhD, voice timbre as beautiful as heavily inlayed golden bell... powerful and dynamic to handle all kinds of opera roles at ease, What a handsome gift He is for opera lover. I cannot get enough from his singing, have not seen anyone nowdays to match nor to surpass... Bravo!
Gedda is the embodiement of bel canto technique married with eastern theological lithurgy roots. He is an aristocratic singer - due to his heritage he would not doubt have been appointed as an Excellence under the former Table of Ranks and thus belonged the highest aristocracy of the former Russia. And, that is it, Gospodin Gedda, un chevalier sans peur et sans reproche!
I never met him, but this video show what a great person he was, not only his unique beautiful voice, but he was also a good man with a warm human personality. And I must add, that there is something similar to Jussi Björling’s personality. I am convinced, that also Jussi had wanted to teach young opera singers, if he had not died. And both these two fantastic singers had melancholy, sadness, in their personality. And that we can hear when they sing, also when they sing a positive aria. Although it is a joyful aria, they show the heart in the singing, the voice. And the audience can feel that expression. A very fine video. Thanks.
Very interesting movie I love it. Good choice as usual dear Lady. Thank you very much for posting, I will certainly cherish it and pass the word to my entourage. Danke Frau Janja.
Naja, unser zunehmend arrogante Super Tenor Jonas Kaufmann könnte da noch was lernen.
He set the bar very high as a tenor. As for his depression it may have been caused by the lack of appreciation for his genius or from a deep personal conflict or both.
Nicolai Gedda is my favourite all-time tenor. Without doubt. Sorry to say I wish there is a translation for this film as it looks so interesting & hearing from other singers & his history. is there possibly a version with English subtitles?
I agree. Gedda has the most beautiful tenor of all. Some others are of course also technically advanced, or may take higher notes or whatever - but according to me Gedda has the most beautiful voice! Speaking at least six languages he could also give each song justice in its original language. A truly great singer and I'm very glad I could hear him live.
Wow! envious! where & when did you see him perform? You are so right about his quality of voice & languages, though I haven't heard other tenors sing better high notes either!
It is Je crois entendre encore from Les pêcheurs de perles. ruclips.net/video/7o_Y3FALzyU/видео.html or ruclips.net/video/7_5CvyEkSn8/видео.html. Thank you.
his most amazing contributions, the Rachmaninov is not even mentioned here. How sad, and it is not all about dramatic opera. Really disappointed in this testimony to his talent completely avoiding his Rachmaninov songs.

Just super perfect, indeed the best tenor EVER of ALL times.
That was simply beautiful !

A true intellectual, and an amazing singer. What a gem!
Thank you
My pleasure.

It would be great if someone could subtitle this. Nicolai had the greatest voice I've ever heard.

This was such a great documentary of great Nicolai Gedda.
A truly great tenor. No doubt , whatsoever.

One of my favourite tenors ,wish I could understand German.
What a voice, what a life! My favorite tenor
you will find no better ever, maybe in an other century.

Salute to the einzigartig Master!
Wo findet man solche Tenöre heute?
Fritz Wunderlich
Imbatible con pronunciación impecable !!!
THANKFUL ...
You're very welcome :)
I have never heard anything sup-par by Maestro Gedda! I wish he would contunie as mentor and teacher, and impressario!
Ganz großartig!
I love forever.

SPLENDID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He set the bar very high as a tenor. As for his depression it may have been caused by the lack of appreciation for his genius or from a deep personal conflict or both.
Thanks! really fascinating
his Rachmaninov songs are perfection.

Kind, pithy, wonderful sketch! Many thanks!
Thanks to you, Alexander.

Wow! envious! where & when did you see him perform? You are so right about his quality of voice & languages, though I haven't heard other tenors sing better high notes either!
What a pity there are no English subtitles. You would reach many more people.
Yes, I'd like the subtitles too.
Fritz Wunderlich was the best of all Time
I like him, but I prefer Gedda.
First there was Pavarotti King of the high Cs and then there was Nicolai Gedda the Knight of the high D.
nicolai came first high c and high d, the most important is his techniques and controls, PHD. His voice quality or tune be so bright and recognizable,
I agree with you completely, Mike.
Really? Good for you.
Please subtitles!!
What's the aria in the very beginning? I would love to hear his full rendition!!
It is Je crois entendre encore from Les pêcheurs de perles. ruclips.net/video/7o_Y3FALzyU/видео.html or

Does anybody know if there's a version with english or french subtitles?
There is an English and a French version. I had them, but I can't find them. Maybe I shall.
his most amazing contributions, the Rachmaninov is not even mentioned here. How sad, and it is not all about dramatic opera. Really disappointed in this testimony to his talent completely avoiding his Rachmaninov songs.
Is there a separate video for the first song?like very much
Sorry, I don't think there is. I suppose it is only in the archives of the french televison.
@@NewHerur Okay, it ’s a pity not to see the complete one.
Oh, yes, I agree.
What about Alfredo Kraus ?
26:47 I don't know how he keeps a straight face. Hilarious.
una furtiva lagrima - why singing it like a Wagnerian?
Leonid Sobinov#1.
high notes do not ever make a dramatic tenor. and he flirted with marketing himself as a dramatic and it is simply not true.
Celeste Aida - totally bad decision, yet he survived it, barely.
Thank you
