    Very nicely done! This disaster will continue to haunt our minds. Great information about the lifeboats. One can only imagine the horror of living though that awful night.

    Thank you for this sobering and informative video. This is the first time I've seen so much information about the Titanic's lifeboats in one place. Something that has stayed in my mind for many years is the account of an officer who refused to let a boy of about 12 into a lifeboat. A survivor saw the boy just curl up on the deck in what had to be terror and despair. If that officer whose name I don't recall survived I hope he never forgot what he did and regretted it to his final breath.---I once saw a documentary called "Titanic--A Question of Murder" and it was shown that at least one Harland & Wolff or White Star official wanted to the Titanic to carry far more lifeboats, boats that the liner could and should have carried. Still it's possible that extra lifeboats would have been of limited help: the Titanic was nearly gone while the few lifeboats she did have were still being lowered. Perhaps those extra boats would have broken loose and given people something to hold onto or use as a raft in the water and a few more lives be saved.---I know that J. Bruce Ismay has been made one of the villains of the story but it seems that at least some of that was generated by William Randolph Hearst who would later destroy the career and reputation of Fatty Arbuckle the silent film star. I've seen and read so much about the Titanic that I can't always remember the source but somewhere I read that if Bruce Ismay had stayed on board and died his death would have been "another useless death". Too he doesn't get the credit he deserves for directing people to the boats and preventing more deaths. I blame no one for surviving. The survival instinct is the strongest instinct we have. So easy for people to say, "I would do this", or "I wouldn't do that" when they talk about how they would handle a disaster situation. They don't know until they are there and they might do very differently from what the said.---What a bungled affair was the lowering of the lifeboats. Hopefully the chances of a similar situation are at least reduced because there is so much knowledge about the sinking of the Titanic.

      +Andrew Brendan The officer may have been Lightoller who worked the port side boats. He insisted on women and children ONLY. On the starboard side Murdoch boarded women and children FIRST and then allowed men to follow if there was still space available. I read a couple days ago men on the starboard side were 5 times as likely to find a lifeboat than those on the port side. As you gathered I made this video to emphasize the futility of simply having more lifeboats. They weren't even able to launch the 20 she did have. If nothing else was changed she would have gone down with boats still in the davits rather like the Andrea Doria. The crew's inexperience regarding the boats was a much bigger issue. It's why lifeboat drills are required by law these days and they involve both the passengers and crew. I agree that Ismay was treated unfairly by the press. One of the inquiries concluded that Ismay staying on board would have been just another death.

      +iluvcamaros Just a short distance from where I live is a cemetery in which there is a granite monument with the name "J.B. Crafton" and above the name are no dates but just the words "Lost on the Titanic". I don't think Mr. Crafton's body was ever recovered. I walk on the same streets and go past some of the same houses and stores as this man who was failed by the lack of lifeboats and experience on the Titanic.

    Someone should rebuild one of these lifeboats and test their real capacity. My guess due to calm waters at that night would be some 100 people.
    Not possible to lower them with that many people but possible to save much more persons being already in water.

    • @paulheenan9098
      @paulheenan9098 8 лет назад +5

      +robinhood48 Not really. Lifeboat 11, a mere 5 people over capacity, sunk low in the water following launch from the ship and was partly swamped. Some passengers had to transfer to another boat to stop the swamped boat from sinking. Also, with over a thousand people in the water, you would have dozens of them grabbing the sides of your boat. This would have possibly led to the lifeboat capsizing with more people ending up in the water.

    • @robinhood48
      @robinhood48 8 лет назад +1

      +Paul Heenan
      I think you are right concerning capacity of the boats. But they did not even try.
      What they did was to escape those who were struggling for their lives. I understand that passengers, mostly women and non- sailors will act that way, so we have to face the main problem of this night again- the total lack of organisation and the total failure of installing and maintaining of a chain of command.
      Can you agree?

    • @paulheenan9098
      @paulheenan9098 8 лет назад +4

      There was an absolute crumble of leadership onboard, yes. Captain Smith wandered the deck in a daze, apparently awaiting his inevitable fate, and gave orders only when they were suggested to him. Amazingly, only Smith, the senior officers, Andrews and Ismay knew of the ship's fate - nobody told the rest of the crew that Titanic was sinking.
      In the end, the lack of preparation and communication among the crew and the outright stubbornness of the passengers led to a poorly executed evacuation of the ship.

      +Paul Conneely No, sadly. All of Titanic's lifeboats mysteriously disappeared following the sinking ( possibly as part of White Star's aim to remove all traces of Titanic, including the crew, and forget about the disaster). A rumour persists that the lifeboats ended up on Olympic, but it was never proven. However, one of Nomadic's lifeboats has been discovered, repaired and preserved.

      All 20 were launched but not all were collected by the carpathia. After the ship sank, some of the boats were consolidated so that teams of officers could take mostly empty boats back to the debris field to look for survivors. They had waited to long though and all but a handful had already frozen to death. Some people also did not survive despite making it to lifeboats. It was two hours before the carpathia arrived and conditions were very cold. Some lifeboats were used to contain these bodies so they could be collected later. Some lifeboats were just left behind. Being the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, a portion of the boats left behind for one reason or another were never recovered. I’m not sure I’d fault the crew for being disorganized. It’s easy to criticize in hindsight, but keep in mind this was the maiden voyage of the titanic and most of the crew was new to their posts. Before striking the iceberg, there was supposed to be a drill that morning to train the necessary crew. This was cancelled as it would disrupt Sunday morning services and this sort of drill would have required them to bring the ship to a complete stop.

    It is unknown why Captain Smith cancelled a lifeboat drill that was scheduled on Sunday morning.
    The designers decided to remove lifeboats from the deck saying it looked to cluttered. Even though the ship met British law on the required number of lifeboats, it was outdated and so they only had enough lifeboats for about 1/2 the people on the ship.
    Lifeboats not filled to capacity. Some lifeboats were not even half full, resulting in more lives lost that could have been saved. Crew feared it would buckle, even though they were tested at Belfast. They could have saved 500 more lives. Also, the boats refused to return to the ship rescuing more people fearing the sinking Titanic would suck them in - which was not true.

    many if not most considered it a crime that there were not enough lifeboats for all however on a ship with thousands they were simply doing what was considered normal at the time. are airplanes equipped with parachutes for each person? no so a person accepts the risks. it was not expected that the Titanic would sink in a couple hours so the lifeboats were the norm for the time. however speeding ahead into the ice was not and that was the real crime. for survival it also would be wise like they do on tankers to have basic immersion suits similar to an insulated dry suit small medium and large to buy precious time if the person ends up in the water or even in a boat in sleety freezing rain would give protection. they also would not take up much space at all. many of the victims froze to death in a few minutes but could have been hauled out alive in immersion suits a couple hours later.
