- State of Origin has not appeared on the AFL calendar for 20 years. In this video we look into the reasons why Origin Footy has disappeared from AFL fixtures entirely and ponder whether 2020's Victoria vs The All Stars match could spark a permanent return.

@@ZeeDog27 as someone who goes to watch footy week in week out, rain sun or snow, bawling my eyes out when we lose, cheering till my throat hurts when we win, I beg to differ. in Australia ‘soccer’ is not big, but European and South American ‘soccer’ fans are entirely more passionate than AFL supporters. Trust me, I love footy and it’s my favourite sport. I haven’t missed a match of Norwood is 4 years (and when I miss those games I’m at the MCG watching Melbourne as an interstate member). Fan culture back in the 70/80/90s was so much better when local football ruled the game. There’s heaps of old videos on SANFL and Norwood had such an incredible cheer squad. Makes me sad to see how local footy has been mistreated and used by the higher ups.

Probably one of the best and only viable solutions I've ever heard on the subject, yet unfortunately still a long shot. If it were ever possible (and I'm not sure it is) to extend the season to cover March and October, this might aid the idea of a state tournament.

It needs to go back to being the representatives of the State leagues. This would free up the clashes with AFL players and also give a platform for state league players to show their wares on the big stage.
It should be like a champions league format with the best players from the VFL, SANFL, WAFL and NEAFL playing a short round robin and then a final at the end. It could work.

100% agree. As an avid SANFL follower (Norwood) I’ve always had this idea in the back of my mind. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the European football (soccer) structure, but it’s essentially like this;
teams from
England (EPL)
Italy (Serie A)
Germany (Bundesliga)
Spain (Laliga)
France (Ligue 1)
And then a few teams from countries such as Scotland, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, Portugal, Holland etc
All these countries have individual leagues (obviously), which can be compared to state leagues such as VFL SANFL WAFL etc
These teams participate in the annual UEFA Champions League (UCL) which is the biggest European trophy contested annually.
I propose that the minor premiers and grand finalists of each league participate in an annual tournament called ‘the Champions of Australia’. Of course, there was a previous tournament but I’m unsure of how it was structured. Additionally, if the minor premier is the same as one of the grand finalist, the second placed team after the minor round will be included into the Champions of Australia (I’ll refer to it as COA from now on) fixtures. If both grand finalists and 1st & 2nd placed teams are the same, the 3rd placed team (after the minor round) shall be included in the COA.
By utilising the structure of selecting teams like the UCL, we can formulate a tournament played across Australia annually.
The normal state leagues will continue, but there will be bye rounds throughout the calendar dedicated to COA fixtures.
The final of the COA will rotate across the states, as the UCL final rotated throughout different European nations.
As I aforementioned, I am an avid Norwood supporter. I can only imagine what it might be like to see a traditional Norwood v port COA final at a sold out stadium. Alas, one can dream.

@J G this is a fairly ignorant comment with little understanding of the nuances of Australian culture. As an outsider, sure soccer is a good game but it just doesn't resonate with Australians culturally, it's never been played here at a high standard. AFL is such a unique and dynamic sport to watch, it's only going to grow here, not diminish
@@thescoutn2967 I like this but it seems a little complicated. I know for a fact that the new VFL structure (VFL + NEAFL together) was already very difficult to run week to week as many players are para-professionals and need to sacrifice a lot of personal time to make it happen.
Add Covid into the mix and it was almost impossible.

The best format I have heard is Australia Country vs Australia Metro. Eliminates state borders and there would be a fierce rivalry between country folk and city slickers.

They should ASAP implement Leigh Matthews' idea, as it will help generate interest: NAME the state of origin teams every year. It doesn't matter that they won't play. Sound silly? They name an All Australian team every year that plays no one, and yet being named in it is one of the highest honours a player can receive.
Yes the football associations should do it each year. That will grow the concept.
I think they were doing this informally in WA. But I don't think there were presentations.

Are you aware of the fact that the last 2 times the BIG played at Football Park the Stadium was full. Crowds were only bad in the 90's for the stupid Allies matches nobody in SA or WA wants to watch the Allies. Do you think Victorian's would like WA VS the All Stars?
Great video, one thing though you talk about the average crowd in WA being only 20k. The main reason for that is that Subiaco did not have lights for the majority of the 90s meaning that Origin was played at the much smaller WACA Ground. WA VS VIC would have gotten a much bigger crowd if it had of been played at Subiaco.

The last two SA VS Victoria matches at football park were played in front of full houses. The Origin Matches that failed were played with the Allies playing.
I would be fully supportive of the return of State of Origin. Even though my dad is Victorian, I would still support NSW anyday. Go the Blues!

It will be the closest thing AFL could get to resembling a footy world cup.
If you have an indigenous team then that would unfairly penalise WA. I reckon play just before the season starts. The players in the Origin match don't do a practice match for their club. You can have double headers for shorter duration matches. Then a final in the following week. Players must be adequately compensated in event they are injured. For instance a serious injury must finish their career. So a form of compensation is essential to get player buy in. Also, clubs need the option to be compensated with extra recruitment possibilities or salary cap if a key player is injured. This is essential. Other option is before grand final, but that could unfairly impact non Vic clubs.
a State of Origin tournament at either the end of the season or a couple of months before the next season, bring in 6 teams, WA, SA, Vic, NSW, QLD and Tas, separate into 2 different groups, followed by a semi-final then a grand final.

The last 2 South Australia VS Victoria Matches at Football Park were played in front of crowds of 45,000 and 41,000. The bad State of Origin crowds were only for the Allies Matches.
That picture of Tony Lockett and Dermott Brereton, they both played for Victoria on that day but Dermie was the type of player who would often swap his guernsey/jumper with his opponent after the match.
Thus is the reason why that picture of the two of them seemed like they were from opposing sides.
Stynes and Dunstall played for Victoria too. What a joke.
Stephen Kernahan and Wayne Carey once starred for South Australia, so the VFL changed the rules to stop Carey from playing for them again.

Have a four weeks mid season in which it’s played. Play full proper matches mid week like they do for rugby league. Have 2 groups of 4 teams (you play each team once) and the winners of each group play in the final. Teams would be, Victoria, NWS, Queensland, Tassie, WA, SA, NT, Canberra area

Firstly Money. Money was the main thing & having your star's injured in State of Origin games would & did cost club's dearly.

Then the rules. What exactly is State of Origin?
Every year it would change.
It started with where you were born, then where you played your 1st game as a junior, then senior & then professionally & so on.
The rules changed every tournament.
I'm from Melbourne & I remember Michael Roach "Tasmanian" wearing the big V. Jason Dunstall "Queensland" wearing the big V & Victorians didn't care just as long as we won.
Then there was a player who's name escaped me, according to Victoria he should've been wearing the big V but he wanted to play for Sth Australia as they had the dominant team that year & he wanted to be a winner & they did.
So aside from everything you mentioned which is true the main reasons were,
Money
Injuries
Rules.
I'm a Tiger supporter & I was amazed when Dimma was positive & for State of Origin.
It would only take 1 or maybe 2 players too get injured & they'd/he be saying it's a waste of time.

Interstate/State of Origin Footy A history
The first time Vic played SA was an intercolnial game was in 1879 in a revised research. Then in 1906 the ANFC was formed as the governing body for the 4 major Leagues which is League footy, the VFL, SANFL, WAFL and TFL and for the record it was the VFL, SANFL, WAFL and TFL under no circumstances was it more the VFL, SANFL and WAFL. The VFA from 1896/7 with the exception of 1954 and 56 until 1989 was standalone they were not part of the ANFC and did not play state footy minus 1954 and 56 until 1990. Then in 1908 the interstate carnival was introduced and in a revised research it was from 1908 until 1977. It would be played between Victoria, SA, WA and Tas and under no circumstances was it played more between Victoria, SA and WA. The first game was played in 1908 at the MCG between Vic and SA. Then later in 1908 Vic played SA in New Zealand this was the first game held outside Australia long before NSW and QLD started playing footy.
Today all interstate/State of origin is Played between the 4 footy states Vic, SA, WA and TAS Minus the NAB U18 which is and elite carnival which e.g., TAC cup and is the only comp that has all states and Vic metro/country and has no relationship with under 16s or any junior carnival which is non elite played between the 4 footy states which occasionally has NSW and QLD. The only reason why U18 which colts footy not junior/underage is because its talent for the draft. It is the only sport in Australia where Vic v NSW does not have a rivalry.
In the 1950s Australian footy was introduced to NSW and QLD. Rugby league was introduced in 1843 than in 1908 then the NSWFRL was introduced remember the word footy refers to Rugby League before the 1950s no Aussie rules was in those states. In 1954 the ANFC carnival was played in QLD with VIC, SA, WA, TAS and the VFA who wore a gold V. Then in 1956 the same in Sydney. In 1958 in the 100th year of Aussie Rules the carnival was held in Victoria at the MCG which was the home of the ANFC. It was played between VIC, SA, WA and TAS. The VFA and the AAFC did not take part in the actual carnival they took part in the parade and in curtain Raisers.
The 1960s saw some very heated battles the 60s was the last of the state rilvary up till 1969 it was all about the SANFL, WAFL and TFL there was no comp over the Rd called the VFL. This was the last of the rivalry at its peak.
The 1970s the VFL became nationally recognised with the VFL now the biggest and Best League. It then began to take over the SANFL, WAFL and TFL. By 1975 all games were played at the league venue VFL/WARERLY Park, Football Park, Subiaco and York Park, this is why they not blockbuster games. With the VFL now the biggest and best the players from the SANFL, WAFL and TFL which are considered interstate players would now go over to the VFL there only loyalty was their state that’s why players like Kernahan and Bradley were loyal to their clubs one of the many reasons. Before 1977 the players would represent the state of the league. Then because the SANFL, WAFL and TFL began to lose its top flight players and the rivalry was not same up till 1969 the players wanted to play for their state. The State of Origin was championed by the WAFL not the WA commission as it was not founded nor was it the Subiaco football club before Subiaco was the league venue owned by the WAFL this why it was not against SA. It would be played in October because there was already a interstate game during the season and because Perth hosted the Champions of Australia. The Sandgropers smashed the Vics by 94 points there were 10 VFL players who actually played for the VICS early that year. The state of origin would become the 3rd comp in the 1970s. It was passed it would played between the 4 footy states minus 1987.
How about SA vs Victoria SOO Series for the first year, game one played before the season, the 2nd in the middle of the season and get rid of the Bye rounds and have a week off the AFL where the SOO matches can be played with State league matches can get bigger crowds, the final game to be played on the AFL Finals bye
You talk about how the average State of Origin Crowd in WA was only 20k in the 1990s are you aware that ONLY the WACA had lights in the 1990s so as a result most State of Origin Matches were played at the WACA not at Subiaco Oval. This meant that if a game was Sold Out as the last 3 WA VS Victoria matches were at the ground that that you would only get a crowd of around 24,000 as the Capacity was ONLY 27,000 but as is the case at the MCG Members would not show up. Victoria VS WA matches that were played in WA were always extremely popular as were Victoria VS South Australia matches that were played in Adelaide and even Victoria VS Tasmania matches that were played in Tasmania were always sold out. The Crowds that were terrible in SA and WA were the matches that were played against the Allies. The public do not wanna watch the Allies or All Stars they want there State to play against the BIG V.
Hey there, thanks for keeping the discussion going! The point about the WACA crowds is definitely a fair one, although the games played at Subiaco in the late 80's weren't all that much bigger. Still, it would have been interesting to see how attendances would have gone at a larger ground. While the Allies certainly failed to attract a big crowd, it's also worth mentioning that even the games between SA and WA in the mid-to-late 90's barely half filled Football Park. But as we said in the video, we're in agreement that the Allies concept doesn't work.

if a state of origin returns, it has to be a true one between Vic, Tasmania, QLD, SA, WA, NSW.. but i noticed some states need to rebuild their football program again. Tasmanian football was huge back in the day that drew big crowd, now its been dead since the 90s. I blame the AFL for that. Lol
One of the problems with Origin in the AFL is stakes. When it was played, it was one weekend and 2 games, with rivals rotating each year. One of the reasons NRL Origin works is that it has stakes, a trophy on the line, played across 3 games. Best way to work it with AFL is to have a 4 way round robin with a table. That way each state plays against the other 3 once and there is stakes on the line, rather than beating a foe and having to wait 3 years to face them again.
Another thing, and I level it at NRL Origin too, is perhaps it should be a post season thing, where potential for injuries and players removed wont affect clubs regular season campaigns. One annoying thing with the NRL is that top teams will tend to lose matches around origin time cause their players are taken out for the games.
It has to be at beginning of the year or not at all.
Here is my Idea Concept of State Of Origin:
So my idea is to have the Same Format of this years Bushfire Relief State Of Origin Teams with The Victorian Big Vee’s in the All Navy Blue kit and the iconic White Vee design and the All Stars who will just be the best players from every state except Victoria and will play in all White with a Gold Design. The Format will be the same as NRL State Of Origin 3 Game Series but without the 2 States, they will still call it the AFL State Of Origin Series for marketing Prices Ect. Their will be 3 Games, Lets say it’s 2023 The First Game will be at the Adelaide Oval and it will be played 1 week before the AFL Season Starts and 1 Week after the Marsh Community Series finish and will be played on a Sunday Night at 7:30 pm Channel 7. Game 2 will be played during the Middle of the Season and my idea is that the AFL Should Scrap the 3 Weeks Bye and have like 4 games Bieng played that week and just turn it into a 1 Week Off Bye where players can Rest Up and have 1 week to train harder and change tactics, Game 2 of AFL State Of Origin will be played during that week and I don’t think the Players that are chosen to play won’t mind to play that week as they will also be payed a lot of Money during the Series, Game 2 will be Played on a Sunday Night at the MCG around 7:30 pm again. Game 3 Would be played after the AFL Regular Season Ends and will be played on the AFL Finals Week Bye Round Where players can rest up and train for the Finals, during the Finals Bye Weekend there will be the AFL E.J. Whittens Legends Match which will be played at Optus Stadium and then the AFLW State Of Origin Played at Optus Stadium and then it will build up to the AFL State Of Origin Game 3 at the Optus Stadium and it will the 3rd and Final Game of the Year for SOO 2023, the Game will be played on Sunday at Optus Stadium and it will be at 7:30 pm again on Channel 7. After the Game is finished their will be an Awards Night out on the Ground where spectators can watch the Players getting an award and also a State Of Origin MVP series award Vote. After Every Game their will be a Medal that the best player on the ground will get.
Seems that in the AFL winning a premiership is the focus, whilst State of origin in NSW and QLD grabs the attention right from the beginning of each season.
It’s a no brainer, with NRL state of origin being as exiting as it is. Imagine how exiting AFL state of origin would be.
What makes NRL Origin work is that NRL is really just NSW and Queensland, with parsimonious support outside of it, mostly concentrated in Melbourne. It works across the country because we almost all know someone from NSW or Queensland who get us, as their friends, invested into the game.
AFL Origin doesn’t work because it’s a far more national sport. It’s only really viable as Vic vs WA, as SA are probably not good enough to compete and an “Allies” team giving SA the rest of the country doesn’t motivate anyone. Victoria and WA really don’t have that same animosity either; Victoria really only hates NSW and SA, WA hates the Eastern Seaboard in general.
State of Origin was a huge success in 1994 and 1995 then they introduced the Allies that is what killed State Of Origin. Every single Allies crowd was poor. Bring back state of origin state vs state.
Hey Scott, thanks for your comment and good to see your passion! As we said in the video that epic game in '94 was definitely one of the highlights of the decade and games like that are a key advertisement for why State of Origin could work once again.
Have 2 divisions. 4 teams in top div and 3 in bottom. Each team plays the others in its div once. In each division the top 2 face off in a final to crown the division champion. In the top division the winner is crowned national champion and in the bottom division they are promoted to the top division. The team that finishes last in the top division is relegated. I’d play this over 4 weeks in the middle of the season
Reading a seasons diary from Brian Taylor in 1990, even in those days it was a hinderance for the players and was a "waste of time" and an ego trip for Whitten and Barassi.

Most players no longer play in their own State. This is the reason why the AFL is so against playing Origin. SA VS VIC would highlight that the Crows and Power have almost no South Australians playing for them.
I went in 89 amongst the 91k people and looked forward to playing SA again at the MCG four years later. However that game was a disaster on many levels. It was the first time they had a twilight match and also the cost for attendance was much higher than normal. I remember getting to the ground and being genuinely shocked at the admission price. My mates were waiting inside the ground but if they hadn't been, I would have walked away and gone home. It poured rain, Vic lost and the crowd was only a third of 4 yrs earlier. State of Origin seemed to die a lot that day.
I am currently working on a response video to to this video. This video is beyond disrespectful to Tasmanian Football. You say the other States could not compete this simply is not true. Tasmania beat Victoria in 1990 and played another epic against Victoria in 1991. Both these matches were played in front of Lock Out Crowds. New South Wales and Queensland also both beat Victoria in the 1990's. South Australia also won more matches against Victoria than they lost in the 1990's. State of Origin lost its way in 1996 NOT 1990 when the AFL indroduced the Allies and got rid of Tasmania, NSW, QLD. How could you possibly think a Proud Tasmanian would have as much interest in the Allies playing the BIG V as they would Tasmania playing the BIG V. As a former New South Welshman (now South Australian), I'd only ever support a NSW team not that Allies garbages. If it was the Allies I'd just support South Australia.
The last two times South Australia played Victoria in SA the matches were played in front of Full Stadiums.

The crowds were terrible for Allies in the 1990's matches NOBODY wants to watch the Allies people wanna watch their States the crowd was big in 2008 NOT because of the All Stars but because people wanna watch the BIG V. The Match was SOLD OUT in 2020 not because of the All Stars but because people wanted to watch the BIG V. You say the other States could not compete with Victoria RUBBISH. In the 1990's Tasmania beat Victoria, NSW beat Victoria and South Australia beat Victoria more times than Victoria beat SA. The AFL should bring back State of Origin but not with this All Stars and Allies rubbish but with STATE VS STATE which is what everyone wants. Nobody in SA,WA,TAS,QLD, NSW wants to watch the All Stars they wanna see their State.
Hi Arron, thanks for your comment. We're still quite a new channel so any and all feedback is greatly appreciated. With such a long history, there's no way we can ever cover all the points in a 7 minute video, so discussion is always welcomed. Like we mentioned in the video, we definitely agree with your point that the All Stars (and Allies) wouldn't work for the long term success of the state of origin concept. The Tasmania team that beat Victoria in 1990 is also currently on our list of potential ideas for future videos, so let us know if you'd like to see more on that. We also never singled out Victoria as the only state that could win SOO matches. It's true they suffered a few defeats in the 90s and although their present day team is quite strong if a carnival was held today, we imagine many people might have WA going in as favourites. @@FootyA2Z Sorry mate I did not mean to sound critical of the video I am actually a pretty big fan of your channel. I get the feeling your quite young and that means that your are not aware of how different stadiums were in 1999 a wet day would cause the crowd to literally be cut in half for most of the 90s only Subiaco had lights this meant State of Origin Matches could be played at the WACA as they were midweek. So it now looks like there was no interest in Origin in WA because of low crowds when the reality is all the BIG V Matches there were sold out. I would love to see you make a video on the why Tasmania should have a team I think its madness that they do not.

AFL is a business. The players are controlled by the coaches, who are controlled by the club executives. Even if the players wanted to play it's irrelevant. The club executives simply won't risk players for an exhibition.
Bring it back with the original 4 first. Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia.
Would it be insane to merge the Queensland and NSW teams into an "East Coast" team? You could even give them Tasmania.
That would just be the Allies minus ACT and NT. It doesn't really garner much support given the smaller percentage of footy-playing population in the Allied states/territories whether they are merged or separated.
I think only WA, SA and Vic should compete given the amount of AFL players they consistently produce. If they wanted a fourth team to play in order to have an even number of teams, it should either be a playoff between Tas, QLD, NT and NSW/ACT to make it into the fourth spot, or just a straight-up selection based on which of those states/territories have the most current AFL players.
To prevent burnout, the AFL should only run SOO every 2 or 4 years. This will help make it a bit more 'exclusive', too.

It's a shame Victoria never got to play WA after the games left the WACA and moved to Subi, would have been interesting to see how much the crowds increased in the larger stadium. While the Allies certainly didn't help the concept, and we agree that no one really wants to see them back, their games weren't the only ones that flopped. NSW and QLD played in front of just 7,000 in '92 and even SA vs. WA only managed 16k in '96 (less than half the VIC vs. Allies game that year). Also it is the only sport where Vic doesn’t have a rivalry with NSW and there was also a view the Victorian public has had enough of state footy although this heresy. In contrast to SA, WA and TAS this due to the fact that their grounds are 46,000 smaller than the G. Adelaide Crows still has games at Footy Park to keep up the tradition and because it’s easier for night footy. As I write this Adelaide Oval has not been redeveloped. In 1990 then Subiaco became the home of the West Coast Eagles so in 1990/91 the games were played at the WACA under lights then the Eagles decided to host it at SUBI. Also in 1997 to 99 there was talk about the best players not playing this might be true but even with best players there might not be 90 000 at G as they are not blockbuster games.
The other is the logistical problem before the VFL/AFL was only 18 or 20 rounds. It would be one week in May, June [Queens Birthday] and July and all 4 states would play on the one week before in one state. In a way the international rules is a lot easier to pick a side because its at the end of season, only a select few and it’s a national side remember you don’t need to be an ALL Australian. The fact there is a lot of logistical factors and we have best club v club in the AFL, the fact that not all games have been at the G and does it still have a meaning in a national comp. So how could it work the first solution could be every 4 years on one weekend no split rd. where Victoria, SA, WA and Tasmania could play, the split rd. from 2000-10 games could be at the MCG or Etihad either at 2:20 or 7:30/40 on Friday nights or Saturday Afternoon/night or Sunday Afternoon as they are not big games/blockbuster games which need to be played at day at 2:10/20/30. Or at the new Optus Stadium Carlton or the New Skilled Stadium Geelong hosted by Carlton and Geelong as I write this its 2010 and no redevopment has been done. Or Football Park hosted by Adelaide or Adelaide Oval by Port as I write this in 2010 there has been no redevelopment, Subiaco by the West Coast Eagles or Allianz/Vodophone stadium in Fremantle as I write this Perth Stadium doesn’t exist. The other is maybe Tas v WA at the SCG or Gabba hosted by the Sydney Swans or Brisbane Lions as write this Gold Coast and GWS do not exist.
The 2nd solution would be either every 4,2 or every year during the Preseason as it would be easier to get the best players and it would be more serious than the old Ansett Cup. It would be a 3-week comp with all 4 states playing each other. They don’t need the G it would be Friday or Saturday Night at 7:30/40 or Sunday Afternoon at 2:20 on the proviso it doesn’t make sense to have Saturday afternoon in preseason all games are full 25 plus time on as it is serious who cares about the weather. The grounds would be Edithad, the league venue, Optus Stadium hosted by Carlton or Skilled Stadium, Football Park hosted by Adelaide or Adelaide Oval by Port or Subiaco by the West Coast Eagles or Vodophone/ Allianz Stadium in Fremantle. Or TAS v SA at SCG or Gabba. It does not make sense for NSW or QLD. Also even with a Drop in Pitch at the G they would not be allowed to use it and I don’t think people will go that is why it doesn’t make sense for the AFL to start in the 3rd week of March or became like the NRL. Like the first 2 options’ no final.
The 3rd solution is Midyear with Vic v the rest at the G or Etihad either Friday/Saturday night 7:30/40 or Saturday Afternoon 2:20 as they are not blockbuster games no split rd. as they are not blockbuster games. On the proviso that it is the rest not the all-stars like NBA and introduce the players in real footy fashion not like NBA even sheeds would dismiss it. Overall this a player’s reward.
Finally, as Leigh Matthews said even teams that pick sides without games must be all 4 states.

Its a fucking joke.. Two generations of players have missed out on top tier representative honours. They persevered with the joke that was the international series against Ireland for far too long. The AFL makes a shitload of money they can afford to give something back to the sport. The current gather round in Adelaide shows that an annual footy carnival in a different city every year would be fantastic for the sport even if bumper crowds would be hard to expect in the northern states. They pump millions into Sydney & Brisbane for decades, I think an annual festival of footy would boost the game even better. Persevere with this concept & it will become the hottest ticket in the country. The carnival concept was enshrined before the 70s & the leagues really had a fraction of the money the AFL commands & still managed it. About half of Gil's salary should do it 🤣. Or Andrew Demetriou's seafood budget. And don't skimp. A two tier play off. Tier 1: Vic, SA, WA & Tas. Tier 2. NSW, QLD,, NT & ACT should all get a go & overseas players represent the state they first played for in Oz. So Mason Cox (Vic.) Mike Pyke (NSW). You could do a round robin or lightning premiership format or something else some football brain might come up with that would fit into a fortnight in the middle of the season when we know who the form players are & they are at their peak. Also the states & territories would be playing to get promoted to the upper tier or to prevent demotion to the lower tier. Imagine the rest of Oz piling on if us Vics got dumped to tier 2, a remote but intriguing thought. There's no real pre season comp any more & we have byes a couple of times a year now. Its very doable & I think the players would love it. There might be dud games & dud crowds at some games but that happens all the time in the regular season. Its a much better bet than the great China experiment. They could also have overseas team championships as curtain raisers or whatever replaced the Teal cup. Every grassroots level of footy has some sort of rep comp. Senior AFL talent should have the same chance. The All-Australian guernsey would be a nice carrot too. Maybe half the points needed to make the team relying on origin form. The only alternate to this would be to bring back zones & dump the draft, then wed have Origin every week. It won't happen, teams won't risk losing players, and if it's not the best star studded team then wtfs the point? And apart from hype, what's to gain from this? Its not an additional match added to your tally, same with all your stats, doesn't benefit your teams ladder or finals position. Don't get money for it? You get in trouble for having a kick outside of training because of possibly injuring yourself. 2008 was to celebrate the contribution of state of origin and interstate matches to the history of the code, plus the teams had more stars then the 2020 one, and 2020 was for the bushfire fundraiser. And even then everyone took it easier, hence why there were higher scores and no injuries. And would you really be happy watching these games knowing they're not giving 100%? I wouldn't.
Really the "State of Origin Concept" for representative AFL Football died as the sport transitioned into full time professionalism, and rightfully so. Soccer is the only sport where Representative (international) football still holds weight and meaning and co-exist amongst club/franchise sturctures. State of Origin will never return as a meaningful concept as 1 there is no longer any fan engagement in "state identity" 2. given the physical nature of the sport Clubs do not want to risk thier most expensive assets to meaningless exhibition games.
AFL football is not exclusive to this phenomenon, see the NHL/NBA all star games where players dont want to participate. Even NBA players dont want to participate in the olympics eg Ben simmons, Steve Nash et all

Interstate/State of Origin Footy A history
The first time Vic played SA was an intercolnial game was in 1879 in a revised research. Then in 1906 the ANFC was formed as the governing body for the 4 major Leagues which is League footy, the VFL, SANFL, WAFL and TFL and for the record it was the VFL, SANFL, WAFL and TFL under no circumstances was it more the VFL, SANFL and WAFL. The VFA from 1896/7 with the exception of 1954 and 56 until 1989 was standalone they were not part of the ANFC and did not play state footy minus 1954 and 56 until 1990. Then in 1908 the interstate carnival was introduced and in a revised research it was from 1908 until 1977. It would be played between Victoria, SA, WA and Tas and under no circumstances was it played more between Victoria, SA and WA. The first game was played in 1908 at the MCG between Vic and SA. Then later in 1908 Vic played SA in New Zealand this was the first game held outside Australia long before NSW and QLD started playing footy.
Today all interstate/State of origin is Played between the 4 footy states Vic, SA, WA and TAS Minus the NAB U18 which is and elite carnival which e.g., TAC cup and is the only comp that has all states and Vic metro/country and has no relationship with under 16s or any junior carnival which is non elite played between the 4 footy states which occasionally has NSW and QLD. The only reason why U18 which colts footy not junior/underage is because its talent for the draft. It is the only sport in Australia where Vic v NSW does not have a rivalry.
In the 1950s Australian footy was introduced to NSW and QLD. Rugby league was introduced in 1843 than in 1908 then the NSWFRL was introduced remember the word footy refers to Rugby League before the 1950s no Aussie rules was in those states. In 1954 the ANFC carnival was played in QLD with VIC, SA, WA, TAS and the VFA who wore a gold V. Then in 1956 the same in Sydney. In 1958 in the 100th year of Aussie Rules the carnival was held in Victoria at the MCG which was the home of the ANFC. It was played between VIC, SA, WA and TAS. The VFA and the AAFC did not take part in the actual carnival they took part in the parade and in curtain Raisers.
The 1960s saw some very heated battles the 60s was the last of the state rilvary up till 1969 it was all about the SANFL, WAFL and TFL there was no comp over the Rd called the VFL. This was the last of the rivalry at its peak.
The 1970s the VFL became nationally recognised with the VFL now the biggest and Best League. It then began to take over the SANFL, WAFL and TFL. By 1975 all games were played at the league venue VFL/WARERLY Park, Football Park, Subiaco and York Park, this is why they not blockbuster games. With the VFL now the biggest and best the players from the SANFL, WAFL and TFL which are considered interstate players would now go over to the VFL there only loyalty was their state that’s why players like Kernahan and Bradley were loyal to their clubs one of the many reasons. Before 1977 the players would represent the state of the league. Then because the SANFL, WAFL and TFL began to lose its top flight players and the rivalry was not same up till 1969 the players wanted to play for their state. The State of Origin was championed by the WAFL not the WA commission as it was not founded nor was it the Subiaco football club before Subiaco was the league venue owned by the WAFL this why it was not against SA. It would be played in October because there was already a interstate game during the season and because Perth hosted the Champions of Australia. The Sandgropers smashed the Vics by 94 points there were 10 VFL players who actually played for the VICS early that year. The state of origin would become the 3rd comp in the 1970s. It was passed it would played between the 4 footy states minus 1987.
@adrianbaricheiveich7756 just to correct you that you may be thinking of the Rugby Union Football Code which either started in England &/or would have been introduced here in Australia in (1843) because that the Rugby League Football Code started and being originated from &/or in North of England in both Lancashire & Yorkshire away back in (1895) & then went to Australia in (1908) & then later on to New Zealand in (1909), France in (1934) & Papua New Guinea in (1949) , & Finally, South Africa sometime in the (1950s) & even the Sport of Rugby League Football Code itself has been UNKNOWN in South Africa at that time of course.
