From what I can tell from the location of the earthquake, this one was actually located above the Krysuvik volcanic system however there doesn't appear to be any ground uplift detected from any of the monitoring stations nearby so I, at this point in time, would conclude that this earthquake and accompanying swarm is mainly just stress relief. Much like we saw during previous eruptions from Fagradalsfjall where you would get occasional earthquake swarms in adjacent volcanic systems HOWEVER still worth to keep an eye on as it could also signal activity from that system, Fagradalsfjall or Reykjanes.
How much we feel and are impacted by a quake depends on a number of factors such as the depth it originated at and the composition of the land underlying where we're located. Thus, 4.5 at 10 km generally would be less damaging than if it were at 5 km. Back in the early 1990s, there was a 5.6 quake whose epicenter was 30-35 miles from where I lived. It destroyed the high school in a town near the epicenter and did damage to the state capitol. Our apartment building shook vigorously and sounded like a metal cart being pushed down a street. My Siamese cat worked very hard to scare the quake away for the rest of the day. She was a good girl!
The number of quakes is spiking to 70+ over the last hour (1300 iceland time)
This Earthquake is much closer to Reykjavik... Not in the area that's expected to erupt... This sparks so many questions... Is there magma in that area too that may erupt? Is it just stress release further along the plate boundary? Will these quakes trigger something back at the Magma intrusion to give way and erupt? Things are happening... Uncertainty continues.
God bless and protect Icelanders. Keep your animals safe as well!❤
Earthquakes now reported on the met sites. And several quakes..4.5 followed by 3 x after shock(s).
Thanks for the quick update 😊
Announcement from the Met Office at 11:10am:
"The first information from the Icelandic Meteorological Agency's natural alert due to the earthquake at Trolladyngja.
An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 was measured near Trolladyngja at 10:50 a.m. Another earthquake of magnitude 3.9 was measured shortly after at 10:54, and a number of aftershocks have been recorded. The earthquakes occurred at a depth of about 5 km, but a closer inspection is being carried out. The earthquakes were felt in many parts of South and West Iceland.
The location of the earthquakes is about 20 km NNE of Svartsengi, where land erosion due to magma accumulation is underway."
Dude, along with the Japan earthquake and now the one you just had, over here in the United States we just had a couple in the northeast yesterday where we don't usually see them. I think in Maryland and in New York? What is going on??? Hang in, it might get worse.
Nothing is 'going on' just earthquakes, why do people always make out some weird connection between stuff.@@StrangeScaryNewEngland
@@StrangeScaryNewEnglandYes I have just seen the data & they definitely had one in New York. It is on or close to a fault line.
@@StrangeScaryNewEngland My guess is the X5 flare on dec 31 has contributed
@@StrangeScaryNewEnglandX4 flare, and lots of solar activity
As soon as those tectonic plates move in one direction ( like in Japan) I always know that the other end of the tectonic plate will move too......24 hrs before the massive Indian Ocean tsunami, scientists based on Macquire Island ( a research island for native plants and animals) said there as a big earthquake there, Nobody paid attention because there was only a few scientists on the island and no damage done.......The question is is which tectonic plate will move be effected at the opposite end.
They are actually separating in Iceland, magna rises and becomes lava as it "fills the gap."
At this point, they know it's not of if, it's a matter of when.
@richietattersall2122 on this peninsula the plate boundary is running more East-West rather than North-South, so they are sliding alongside each other in opposite directions.

Very interesting , thanks
Tectonic plates, especially Oceanic ones, are criss-crossed with extensive transverse faults and joints. The convection currents in the mantle are constantly on the move and the earthquakes occur when the local stresses exceed the friction between plates, resulting in sudden failure which results in movements between those plates. Movement in one area could result in a build up in stress in adjacent areas, this has been seen in Turkey, but it is highly unlikely that movement on one plate boundary would affect the stress levels on the 'opposite' side of any given plate. The faults and joints would dissipate the stresses that result from movement on a distant boundary, this is one factor that makes prediction so problematic.
Thankyou! Happy New Year from Alberta, Canada 🇨🇦
Thanks for the update, watch this space !!, stay safe.
nice swarm starting up, was about an hour and half till it showed in the last eruption if its going too.... we will just have to wait, the 4.9 was well off shore to the west of Iceland also bit strange place?
watched a video from geology professor Shawn Willsey yesterday reporting on quake in Japan also. Along with Rob and the Just Icelandic guy they three are the ones I have learned the most from on the ongoing Grindavik situations

Thanks for the update
Thank you Rob...
Thanks Rob stay safe
Prayers to those in Reskaskaskingi or whatever it's called. 🙏
Stay safe Rob!!
Thankyou rob
That's wild
..so basically a " I felt it " report 🤔 At least you are first. Keep safe.
Nothing on the USGS about this quake as yet, thanks for sharing
4.2 AT 4.5 KM ACCORDING TO VOLCANODISCOVERY.
Stay safe all
A 4 + earthquake you would feel especially as it is shallow in depth being only 4 kilometres. A 4 is definitely not a small earthquake. Keep safe. Thanks for the update Rob. 🏴🇬🇧.
There seems to have been a swarm in a really unexpected area, seems to be a couple of systems over from the previous eruption, just when I think I am understanding the geology something unexpected happens.
I studied geology for my degree. This was experience daily for 3 years 😆
@@vhodges5318 LOL, I have a completely amateur interest in the subject, but having visited Hawaii 20 years ago and walked on the active lava flows of Kīlauea I started to read up on the subject, been out to Iceland to visit the Fagradalsfjall volcano. It’s a fascinating subject and let’s be honest cool as **** when these erupt.

Are the EQs around Krisuvik significant? (sorry if daft question - complete amateur here)
It was a 4.3, followed by 3.5 and 3.4
So, what happened from your perspective? Was it just a bit of shaking or the quake caused some building destruction? Judging by the phrase that you just went to look in the window waiting for an eruption it seems to be not too scary quake for you.
Oh wow the eruption probably won't be too far behind! Praying for you all please stay safe ♥
Hi Rob, waiting anxiously, the land uplift and also horizontal movement has stopped at Svartsengi. I hope not that the longer this takes the bigger the eruption will be... Anyway, what's with the broken suitcase ?
Why isn't it listed on USGSS earthquake map? Weird.
Looking at the Vedure map, it looks like it was shallow (4.6 km/ 2.85 miles) which is why it was felt strongly.
Holy hell Batman! Only 13 days till I leave, can’t wait 😮 it’s going to be a long night here 🇦🇺
Thanks for such a quick update, can I ask what timezone you are using please, I am in the UK so it is now 11.28 am here now
it is the same timezone as the UK
Thank you
Very telling!
Hi Rob I'm seeing an earthquake swarm at Krysuvik .
Were getting a lot of solar activity and got eaethquakes here too.
I literally left Iceland today at 7:40am 💀💀 I was hoping I could feel an earthquake
There was from 2.0- 4.2. 6 earthquakes in this morning, we from my earthquake app
Nothing on USGS recent earthqks. Shallow quake suggesting new magma movement.
Why are RUclipss notifications so late?? What good does it do you to have bell notifications when you don't get it til 8 hrs later???
Just asking because I'm still learning. So is that considered a "big" earthquake in iceland? I mean I wonder if it makes sense to have lower magnitude quakes where tectonics rips apart, compared to where they pushes against each other.
The quake effects are based on the composition of the ground and how deep. A smaller earthquake can do alot of damage in the right circumstances.
The plates actually slide alongside each other on this peninsula, albeit in different directions
Earthquake in the 4 range is not giant or huge. All but adobe structures should be fine although if you are not used to earthquakes i am sure it is scary. Take a look at Japan for instance. Good luck and stay safe .
It was a magnitude 4.4 that’s far from being a huge earthquake, compared to the one in Japan at 7.5 magnitude.
My daughter lives in Japan. She doesnt even worry till magnitude hits 5
Try not to flash your fotos so fast....we can not see what you show us.... And the articles you are showing ,is in Islandic....
The cycle persists pressure build up then release only to reappear elsewhere.
Ive been worried about all these happenings for months am i the only one that is connecting these ?
The Japanese earthquake and this one?
@@STAYMETAL1there's No connection between solar and tectonic activity.
@@STAYMETAL1 also a coincidence in time does not mean a connection actually exists. Yes, it is possible that there is a connection however very unlikely. What makes you think there is a connection? I am genuinely interested to hear it. Are you specialized in vulcanology or space physics or anything related and if yes, what is your field?
They happen all year long, all around the world, mostly on or close to plate boundaries.

Just checked USGS and no earthquake n Iceland today
Did you notice the note on the USGS page that says it doesn't regularly report anything less than magnitude 4.5 outside the US and Puerto Rico?
On the earthquake lists page: _All lists include most worldwide events magnitude 4.5 and greater, _
That USGS sounds a bid dodgy, there's always quakes in Iceland during the day.
So japan, Philippines and Indonesia are all part of the U.S. Besides anything under 5 does little damage and you can change the settings if you wish, but I am only interested in the big one that do the damage.@@borismedved835
Did the X-5 Flare hit our planet?
2024 🎉 is starting strong , forget 2023
Erdbebenserie ist sehr gefärlich. Besonders 5 oder 6 auf Richter. Gott ist mit Alle Islander. Guten Tag Rob.
You're faster than the USGS site 😂
Haha well to be fair I felt it at home 😉
oof, here we go i guess.....
Big earthquake would seem to infer its entering new territory. Ie a new likely location of eruption.
There needs to be research into people who can sense quakes as i seem somewhat hypersensitive since moving to SoCal. Not saying i sense literally every single one , though i'll have a random wave of lightheadedness, disorientation, and nausea in the timeframe beforehand. The best way is if i am already laying down because a slight tremor can be felt so i know it isn't only in my head.
I felt/ sensed the new year's quake in Tijuana about 3 hours beforehand. I was laying down feeling a slight tremor along with all the other symptoms. Didn't feel anything for this one
They happen all day, every day, 365, all around the globe on plate boundaries
4.5 is a massive earthquake???
If it is right under you and shallow, yes.
Not even close. It's designated "light" by the scientists. Fun to imagine what the others would have to be called if they wasted "massive" on such a little shake.
3+ Minor, 4+Light, 5+Moderate, 6+ Strong, 7+major, 8+Great
Japan’s earthquake was massive, this one not so much 🤷♂️
Last week, i bet myself 5 bucks it would erupt on the 3rd. So we'll see! Either way i keep my 5 bucks. No one wanted to take the bet. Chickens😅
I did but I didn't have the signal... 😇
This is NOT a „large earthquake“.
i dont wanna be rude, but in chile an earth quake 3.0 4.0 is considered tiny and not dangerous at all. they ar enot used to earthwuakes, if it was like 7.5 then you should worry
The magma is the worry, especially when you're living in the city and it's close to being beneath you.
May be related somehow to the Japan one. We even had a rumble in New York.
I agree related and
Dutchsinse site on you tube called this after Japan.
Wasn’t lookin for it just popped up on feed and then today this
Weird-
Dutchsinse site
I have to confess to being surprised to hear "M 4,5" described as "massive"
lol same here, but it might be when it's on a big volcano?
Yeah, we get 4.5 quakes even in the American Midwest. A few dishes get rattled.
Massive? I guess we all have different ideas of what constitutes "massive".
For Iceland yes. And the eq was shallow so you feel it a lot on the surface!
Wonder if all the fracking is causing eruptions /s
Down graded to 4.3, that's not Massive Rob 🙂Please keep it real, many thanks
Actually it was a really strong one and everything shook for a while, no matter the size.
Gylfi hasn’t posted anything hmmm
Any time we have geostorm activity, like we are having now again, after the last big geostorm was when we had the earthquakes precede the last one. Now again the large geostorm from the sun, and the earthquakes started just as I thought they would. An eruption will be imminent!🌟
4.5 . 🥱
hey! what do you want to tell us? go to bed again. I am bored to death.
A 4.5 earthquake is not a major quake. I live in an area where these things happen once a week, and no one reacts to them because they are so minor.
Do you have many volcanic eruptions where you live?
4.5 isn't big 🙄
Mother Earth wants more CO2, not less.
4.5 is NOT large
USGS is consistently hiding earthquakes from their website.
Someone please tell me what website I can use to get the most accurate data
@crabboil. The EarthMaster is professional, and reliably posts twice daily updates. He's located in Northern California, currently
It's always fun to see someone parrot that nonsense - even when it's someone who doesn't see or get the USGS note that it doesn't intend to report anything under 4.5 outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico. "Hiding"...((snicker)) Anyway, check out Volcanodiscovery. It includes quake reports from every agency in the world, and it includes massive amounts of data.
MASSIVE ???? that a bit of an exageration isnt it.
Earthquakes in divers places. Lord Jesus Christ is coming soon🙏🏼❤️🕊REPENT, believe in the Gospel, Be Born Again
Haha 4.6 is not a massive earthquake hahahahahahahaha
come on now why you need such clickbait? since when 4.2 is considered MASSIVE?
The earthquakes in Iceland are at a shallow depth, and therefore you feel them more than a similar quake in, say, California where they happen at 10 to 15 km deep. Here it is 1 to 4 km depth. Consider that the quake shakes a ball with this depth as the radius. Then A radius of 10 vs 2 km gives a difference in size that shakes of 125 (5 x 5 x 5). In other words, the energy is much more concentrated than with a quake at depth.
The effect of an earthquake depends how far you are from it. If it is a shallow point source and you are close to it, yes, 4.5 is massive. It is the equivalent of 34 tons of TNT exploding.
@@user-fb1em2fw7f shallow earthquakes happens everywhere its not something exclusive to iceland...having said this a 4.2 isnt big or massive at any scale its considered a small earthquake
Massive? LOL
Can you please skip to the "MASSIVE EARTHQUAKE!!!!" part of the video... or upload the correct video?
4,5 is NOTHING, not massive.
Except when there's a huge magma dyke below, close to where you live
"Massive"? After a 7.6 in Japan, really?
_a magnitude 5.3 is a moderate earthquake, and a 6.3 is a strong earthquake. Because of the logarithmic basis of the scale, each whole number increase in magnitude represents a tenfold increase in measured amplitude as measured on a seismogram_
From what I understand, earthquakes are a fact of life in Iceland. Each year, thousands of tremors shake the country, a reminder of its position on a tectonic plate boundary.
3.1 Keilir
Proving once again that our Earth's crust reacts to other quakes around the globe. It's a reactionary and mechanical geologic system.
People have died in Japan. I hope that Icelanders get to safe places...
M 🦘🏏😎
This is not true, does not work that way. One earthquake on the other side of the globe does not make an earthquake happen elsewhere.
Citation needed. You cant just say “two things occurred, they must be connected”. Not least because there are other fault lines in between, why was this region affected but not others?
Proof... 🙈
