  • This is way too close to the eruption. Please remember these gasses and fumes are also extremely dangerous not to mention the heat and well... the lava.

Hmm.. Actually funny you should mention that since Darwin did the same, minus the sausages..
"Geologist Paul N. Pearson suggests in a paper, that this insight into volcanic rocks on the Galápagos provided Darwin also with a first idea for his later formulated theory of evolution. The melted magma inside earth has a uniform composition, but the lava erupting from a volcano on the surface can significantly vary in its chemical composition. This can, as Darwin suggested, explained by magmatic differentation and segregation of minerals by density inside the magma chamber. Grains of minerals form in the cooling magma, the heavy minerals (rich in iron) sink to the ground of the magma chamber. The residual melt is now impoverished in heavy elements but relatively enriched in light minerals (like quarz and feldspar). If this “light” melt is squeezed out from the magma chamber and erupts, light-colored, iron-poor but silica-rich, rocks can form (like rhyolite). Finally also the "heavy" melt from the base of the magma chamber, rich with heavy minerals, erupts, forming dark-colored, iron-rich but silica-poor, rocks (like basalt). There is a sort of natural selection of minerals by gravity, leading to various lava types. "

Tourists who do this sort of thing should be banned from being able to return to Iceland in the future. Maybe a more stringent crack down on this behaviour is warranted. We now know who did this, as can be evidenced by instagram posts which also include videos and pictures of their faces. Your government needs to cross reference that with the scan system for passports and then outright ban them from returning. Maybe then more people will start respecting the rules.

Isak Finbogason caught two folks during his live stream yesterday. One of them slipped and had to brace themselves--I wonder if it was the guy who took the pic of his bloody hand. The other one's foot broke through some lava crust, too, readily proving its fragility. If they're locals, you'd think they could be fined, since they're not hiding who they are, and are actually by proxy encouraging others to take the same risk. That footage of the outflow was horrifying! And cooking next to a fumarole(sp)?????

These guys are not only putting themselves at risk, they're also breaking several laws. And ultimately, as a direct consequence of these actions, it might destroy what's left of hope of this becoming a more tourist friendly event where tourists and us that is very interested in geology and volcanism, can get a closer look at the eruption (but from a safe distance ofc). It's sad to see that people can be that short sighted.
Also, I'm not so sure you should put the links to these guys posts up, because I don't think they deserve views and likes for doing this. The only thing it will result in, is that they're being encouraged to do this again and maybe taking bigger risks to get more views.

I have to admit, I am guilty of grilling hot dogs on lava - however it was during the eruption of Hekla in June 1970 while visiting Icelandic friends (it was their idea!). I don't remember any gases being emitted at the time. We were able to leisurely "accompany" our hotdogs on foot next to the slowly creeping lava as they cooked to perfection. It was an experience I will never forget - and I can't remember well, but I hope we didn't leave any detritus behind.

    Abstract :
The energy that dominates the earth is very great, some of it is natural, like the heat of the sun and volcanoes, and some of it is human action, by cutting down trees, without replacing them and cultivating in their place...
There are five forces that control or dominate the planet...
1- The first theory (horizontal dynamic movement) and its end...
The occurrence of storms, rain, floods and snow, at unexpected times and places, is because of the expiration of this theory, which needs to be balanced...
2- The second theory (vertical dynamic movement) and its end...
This movement or force controls or dominates the earthquakes, earth cracks, drying up of rivers and lakes, earth openings, mountain collapses, and the emergence of drinking water springs on the ground...
    It becomes out of control...
These phenomena increased due to the end of this theory...
The third theory: it is water that rotates the earth...
The fourth theory: the Earth's axis of rotation has tilted 2° degrees...
The fifth theory: The Earth has a new orbit...
These studies had completed and sent on July 26th 2000

Well, we do live only once. And people do many stupid things and many of them we praise them for. So, what's the difference?
They did get some awesome shots of the happenings. Noone can lie about that.

I’ve been following the recent eruptions in Iceland for a few months, so RUclips reeeeally wants to show me all these videos of people tossing bananas and other things into flowing lava, I assume to watch them go “pffft”. I refuse to click. If you can throw a banana into a volcano, you are too damn close!

The stupidity of some people is mind boggling. Not only are they putting their own lives at risk, if they run into trouble, any first responders are put at risk.

First responders should refuse to rescue them. I think it should be the law. Be stupid, end stupid.

A bit of a dive showed they are indeed together... Two idiots who think its funny to put themselves in harms way. One also stole a piece of volcanic rock to take home with him. Ugh

I think they should eat the food they cooked and then see if they can climb the cone.
Maybe they can go mushroom picking later...
All in all the Icelandic people have let me down a bit. I thought by now the Formula Off-road crowd would be racing across the lava pools and streams.

People seem desperate for adrenaline fixes. They should pay for any rescue & medical treatment arising from their irresponsible risk-taking.

Sadly these stupid people get away with this appalling activity and will encourage others who may not be so lucky. 😢 Such a lack of responsibility.
