San Diego channels 10 and 39 switched networks in 1977

  • Do you remember when Channel 10 was the NBC affiliate and Channel 39 was the ABC affiliate? Things got a bit complicated but CBS affiliate News 8 was there to clear things up. No, Harold Greene was not moving to Channel 39 and Channel 39 was not going to move out of its Kearny Mesa studios. Network star Barbara Walters came to San Diego to greet Channel 10 to ABC. News 8's Carol Kendrick ended her report in the Channel 39 studios--possibly the one and only time a reporter from our station did a standup in another station's newsroom.

Such a rare thing to see local news stations actually be reporting about their competitors and in their competitor's studio.

What funny is Channel 39/ now 7 [ which cracks me up] they go by the cable channel instead of the analog. They had Channel 8 reporter in their studios doing her package report. However great video btw. I love it.

I've never understood why present day KNSD only refers to the cable TV channel position. I thought the channel branding of 7/39 was perfect. Same argument could be made for KSWB, they should brand itself as Fox 5/69.

@@tomwellman1554 The most likely reason they dropped the 39 in their logo is because very few people watch their over the air signal. Just using the 7 designation makes it much more simple, from a promotion standpoint.

Interesting KFMB reporting on their competitors (KGTV and the then-KCST) and their affiliation changes and having KCST let that KFMB reporter into *KCST's studio* to cover the story. Strange (and nice) to see that kind of cooperation-despite this being from 1977.

This is not to mention that about five years before this, XETV was forced to give up ABC as they were licensed to Tijuana.
Oh, and a similar switch happened in Atlanta three years later when WSB switched its network to ABC while WXIA went with NBC. WAGA would keep its affiliation with CBS until 1994 when it went with Fox.

KCST had a shotgun affiliation with ABC when XETV gave it up. Then was the three-way switch in the Twin Cities when KSTP flipped from NBC to ABC, independent WTCN (now KARE) took on NBC, and previous ABC outlet KMSP went independent (now Fox).

Back in 1979, WATE-TV Channel 6 in Knoxville went from NBC to ABC, and WTVK Channel 26 went from ABC to NBC. WBIR-TV Channel 10, on the other hand, chose to stay with CBS. That was until 1988, the year of my birth, when Channel 10 went from CBS to NBC, and Channel 26 went from NBC to CBS, and then became WKXT on Channel 8. Today, Channel 8 is now known as WVLT. And Channel 6 stayed with ABC.
