I like how before the priest dies this sounds like a holy place where zelda is safe, but the moment you encounter that tragic scene the theme also becomes haunted
Just beat this game for the first time on the switch about 15 minutes ago. this was my dad's favorite game growing up and what got me into the fantasy genre.
When I was in middle school I found this song ripped on a video game music site and used to listen to it on repeat and my friends thought I was a weirdo haha, but I'm glad to see now I'm in good company :)
I used to leave Madden 95 on SNES on pause and sit in the Temple of Time in OOT for hours, just for the music. Little me didn't know about CRT burn-in, lol, but I managed to escape it.
On a train ride? Damn it took me months to reach where I dropped it off, and then maybe a year to get myself to actually finish it. I suck at videogames lol
Holy shit, i just realized the Southern Face Shrine and probably the actual Face Shrine dungeon in Link's awakening has undertones from this song. Mind Blown!
Absolutely beautiful. I remember when this released for Game Boy Advance, I decided to go with the SNES version instead and picked up a copy of this at a local GameStop in 2003 before all this madness came about. The sound quality of the original SNES is hands down the best for a 2D console, which was why I didn't get the GBA version. Everything sounded tinny and static-ridden on the GBA, so glad to have SNES memories instead of playing this. A game I still pick up and play to this day. Best Zelda next to Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker.
Actually fun fact this music and the building IS a church just censor by nintendo. Christianity was heavily influenced to this game, unfortunately its the last game to ever have Christianity theme in it. You can actually search the original art work in the Japanese version it's extremely rare to Find there's a black and white picture of Link on one knee praying to a crufix cross of Jesus and the pervious game of zelda before ALTTP Link had a cross necklace and a cross shield and a item literally called "The Bible". I understand why nintendo censor it and made them change the lore but it will been so awesome if they kept the Christianity theme for future games!
I have no nostalgic connection with this game because i was born in 1990, and got my first home console besides the Gb Dmg 001 when i was 8, aka the N64. Ocarina of time was my first Zelda game and have been with the others since then. I got to play this game on an everdrive on my snes and.................. Fuck, this thing is as old as me and every note it has hits every part of my early childhood even though i have no nostalgic connection to this game, this tune just does something to my soul, it rekindles my long lost childhood. Sadness, fear and solitude, it's all in here.
Fun fact: in the Japanese version the Sanctuary was called the Church and the Sage was called the Priest. early LOZ games had Christianity be the religion of Hyrule but it was changed due to Nintendo's strict no religion policy in those days. This explains why the Sanctuary looks like a Church.
@@ethanpease5936 You just reminded me how this game in Japan is called Triforce of the Gods. Same with the sequel A Link Between Worlds, it's Triforce of the Gods 2 overseas.
It's is actually, in the original from a nintendo magazine in Japanese you see a art work of Link on 1 knee praying to a crucifix cross of Jesus and the previous games before ALTTP Link had a cross shield and necklace there's a item literally called the Bible you should check it out this game was supposed to be about Christianity but nintendo didn't want that for obvious reasons so they had to change the lore and ALTTP is the last game to feature any Christianity theme.
@@setokaiba9306 That's actually really cool and makes a lot of sense. Wasn't the Zelda 1 shield based on knights with the cross on their shields? I also remember the bible item that gave the wand fire. Pretty rad honestly. It makes sense though that they took that stuff out to appeal to a larger market. Imagine if they hadn't and newer Zelda games had that. It'd be kinda cool to see Link again with the crucifix shield.
@sNintendoFan yeah, knights with cross shields are crusaders like Link is again Christianity theme. And yea, I wish they kept that theme for the future zelda games but oh well
Kinda weird that the Sanctuary resembles a Christian church, and yet you never see anything like that anywhere else in the series, or at the very least you never see one that looks like a Christian church on the INSIDE, or has stained glass windows. Did the Hylians lose faith in the Three Goddesses or something?
When Nintendo made the early Zelda games, it had a lot of Christian iconography. I think a lot of it had to do with Zelda team's idea of "Western Fantasy" while not really thinking about how it would conflict with the game setting/lore. It's neat to think about, though.
The original plan was for Zelda's religion to be christianity but it got dropped more and more as Nintendo started creating the lore around the goddesses. Some items in japanese were literally christian objects like the bible, there's even a rare artwork of Link praying to a crucifix of Jesus.
My siblings and I *HATED* this theme when we were younger since our ears were super sensitive and couldn’t handle the high pitched noises, but I don’t seem to hate it anymore whilst my brother on the other hand just hates the theme in general
I encourage everyone to listen to an arranged version of this song. After hearing it arranged with a more realistic choir sample - my goodness. I never liked this song when I played ALttP because the poor SNES, as amazing as a sound chip is had, it just was not up to the task for this particular piece. Still, kudos to Kondo for the strong composition.
I don’t know why, but this theme gives me the sense of safety and dread. It’s like this is the last stronghold protecting you from evil.
That explains why it was originally meant to be a Christian church
I like how before the priest dies this sounds like a holy place where zelda is safe, but the moment you encounter that tragic scene the theme also becomes haunted

Feels like something I'd hear when you walk into an old church and you see nuns or people sitting on the benches praying
Well it is a sanctuary where you find the priest so not that far off
It would fit the Cathedral in Chrono Trigger better than their original theme IMO, since this one does sound cathedral like but also sinister.
