Graham Young was a serial killer obsessed with poisons and chemicals ever since childhood, but it wasn't until he started killing his co-workers, poisoning their tea with thallium and belladonna, that he earned himself the nickname The Teacup Poisoner.

I was looking through articles of this case and when this case just happened news company wrote an article called "the genius Mind of a teen poisoner." Where it just glorified this killer. I'm glad media today(like eleanor) more focus on shaming these killers

It makes total sense that Graham was so enamored of the Nazis, because they would perform "experiments" on prisoners and keep very detailed notes, just like Graham did. In fact, a lot of the information we know about how long humans can survive in severe heat, cold, without water, etc is because of the Nazis and their torture that they called experimentation

It was incredibly cruel and didn't just target the millions of Jewish people but there were also lots of facilities that specifically targeted polish women. In either Japan or China I think, not sure on where anymore, they were inspired by them and "experimented" on black people with mustard gass. It is an absolute horrific part of history that I feel is not talked about enough when this topic comes up

In WWII the Japanese followed the Nazi's "medical" practices but the German originators didn't head that far east, on the whole.
It makes me think of the absolutely awful "Unit 731" in Japan that also "experimented" on pow's during WWII I believe ? So horrendous.
I dont know about anyone else, but I love the longer stories that have side stories at the end and a huge timeline, really giving you perspective on the situation, the people's lives and how everything plays out. I prefer 1.5-2 hour videos over 30-45 minutes for sure. Can't wait for the next one!

You can't blame the hospital for supplying the laurel leaves. Cyanide is in everything. Apple seeds, cherry seeds, lemon seeds, and laurel leaves are also know as bay leaves (AKA what your grandma throws in her soup for flavor depth). It's everywhere in very small amounts & generally people aren't extracting it to scratch their diabolical itches. I had a poison obsession of my own once lol

It’s crazy they blamed molly’s death on her having a prolapsed disc in the spine, I had one and the likelihood of it killing you is so minimal and it would have to be ridiculously severe and she would’ve definitely been completely paralysed beforehand.

Stories like this really make me wonder how many serial killers and psychopath we come across every day 😳 I hate it when they are relatively liked by others and seemingly normal. That’s the scariest part to me

I'm a chemist (I don't specialise in toxicology) but he wanted matched because they contain phosphorus. When heated (not burnt) and added to something that can donate hydrogen, it can make a toxic gas called phosphine. It's the thing in breaking bads' first couple of episodes when walter is driving the van with a gas mask on.
The distillation of the plant extract probably didn't produce cyanide but some organic compound that releases cyanide as a bi-product while being metabolized. It's a common thing in nature.
Thallium is toxic because you're body mistakes it for potassium. Most (if not all) cells have a potassium ion pump to regulate functions of the cell (eg: nerve cells use potassium pumps to regulate the charge inside and outside of the cell which helps carry signals between cells - just poorly explained action potential). By disrupting this pump, your cells lose function and die.

I really enjoyed this! And this kid knew about all this stuff when he did it. If he put his mind to practical things involving research for society, he could have done great things. He could study poisons in a practical application. But no, he just wanted to kill as many people as possible. It is beyond a waste of talent and a waste of a human.
My old therapist actually lived just down the road from him as a child, she knew of him and as soon as she mentioned his name and his story my blood ran cold, I’ve seen this case before and it’s truly chilling. Hits a little too close to home for my comfort
With such a young death, he was also exposed to MANY toxic chemicals from the time he was a child; I’m a trained hospital pharmacist, and that’s the first possibility that jumped out to me.
Chronic exposure over years and years could have definitely caused him a shortened lifespan.
He was testing it out on himself early on wasn't he? Could have done permanent damage. But yes, incorrect handling may have done him in the end.
This was my first thought as well, he fosho breathed in some of those chemicals over those years. I was wondering that he didn’t have any side effects at all.

The minute I feel funny not long after consuming something, my mind immediately goes back to whatever it was that I last consumed. The fact that the victims mainly assumed it was a stomach virus or an illness that wasn't connected to anything they ate or drank shows how trusting and unsuspecting they were. So sad.

I feel really bad for the people who had lasting side effects, they drank the guys tea and ended up either paralyzed or with ED. Not to mention traumatized

This has got to be one of the most disturbing cases I’ve seen from this channel and the murders weren’t brutal either but just the passion this man had to kill it’s so scary and how easily he was able to get away with it.
Honestly, it almost reminds me of Perfume by Patrick Süskind
white privilege to the last. See how he was even able to request where he went after the second conviction? Were that a black person they would have been jailed the first time for a lot longer.

I recently covered a case involving thallium poisoning and did a bit of research into other cases involving thallium but didn't come across this one. Thanks for bringing lesser known cases to light, Eleanor.
I also just dove into that specific poison because of the Carr case. The Mensa neighbors who used thallium. It sounded absolutely awful and crazy this boy did this and kept doing it!
@@versatahlsharp4638 Yeah that was a crazy case - pure evil. The one I covered was from 1950s Australia and I first saw it during an episode of Deadly Women.
It boggles the mind (or at least, MY mind) to think of how easily available poisons such as thallium were until SO shockingly recently!! All you had to do was pop on down to the chemist and ask for thallium or arsenic to deal with rats or ants...just utterly mind-blowing to me!!
imagine the types on innovating improvements this man could've made to modern medicine or just science in general. Crazy he took a entirely different path.

Eleanor Neale’s own form of storytelling is fairly engaging and immersive. Seems like she really wants us to dig deep into the specifics of the cases she presents per video.
You really haven't watched what immersive and engaging story telling then. Try watching Stephanie Harlow,(my absolute favorite)Emma Kenny and Kimberly. No ill feeling to Eleanor I love her bubbly personality and have subscribed for over 2yrs.

I think the cause behind his heart failure was indeed by his own exposure to chemicals. If you think about it, chemists wear heavy protection when it comes to handling these poisons, and most of the time, I’m pretty sure this guy wasn’t wearing that protective gear. Over decades of him being chronically exposed to poison, of course he would have issues himself.

Just one thing you mentioned, Eleanor. You were speculating on Graham Young's reasons and described him as narcissistic. Graham Young was a textbook psychopath - one of the most extreme cases ever. People tend to attribute other disorders to psychopathy, narcissism etc, but it's not necessarily true. We all show elements of personality disorders but they only become disorders when they're out of balance with other aspects of personality.
It's what makes us human - gives us personality at all. True psychopaths are empty vessels with no trace of humanity, no personality. It's why they can appear superficially charming, taking what they see and using it. Graham Young had no reason because he didn't understand what it is to be human. He didn't understand envy or anger or anything else and certainly didn't feel it. It's really difficult for non psychopathic people to understand there's a black hole where everything which makes us human should be. For Graham Young there was just him and it. People were just things and ultimately he was just a thing to himself.
The way you described psychopathy gives me the chills. It's so scary to think there are ppl out there who think and feel like this.

I've always been into true crime, but primarily it started with my mom's own interest in it. Now, not as much, but when I was a child, she'd often reference Dahmer, Gacy, JTR, Zodiac, and Ramirez. One of which she herself felt terrorized by during his killings. During the 80's my mom was a teenager in high school, living in the LA area. I now live in the house she used to as a teen. I used to ask why our windows were painted shut, and I always got the same response, "The Night Stalker" (Richard Ramirez.) So, to me True Crime would never raise a red flag, unless it was a noticeable obsession.
I’ve heard this one a couple times, but I’ll listen to it again because your voice makes everything easier to listen to.

OMG, I am sooo excited to see you covering this case!! I first heard of it when a friend suggested I watch the film "The Young Poisoner's Handbook," which is an absolutely brilliant movie based on this case.
What an utterly fascinating, terrifying, mysterious and just plain evil person Graham was! It's truly unimaginable for me to even try to comprehend how someone could function like he did...which I suppose is why this case is so bloody fascinating to me in a can't-look-away sort of way.

I really enjoyed your coverage of this case. It was one of the first videos I watched of Brooke McKenna's in her "killer kids" playlist and I always found it interesting. I especially like that both of you kind of laughed at his anger at his perceived "dainty" media nickname: "The Teacup Killer"/"The Teacup Poisoner". Of all the misplaced reverence that serial killers seem to attract from twisted individuals, even a minor laugh at their expense seems appropriate and deserved. Apparently he'd always try pulling what he deemed a "scary/intimidating" facial expression for photos (case in point the thumbnail photo of him)- although I think it looks more like he has gas! 🤷🏻♀️🤣 I'm glad he didn't get the respect he thought he should.

Indeee. I’ve had to ask another RUclipsr to say her trigger warnings aloud for the visually impaired or those who only listen. She finally started doing it, but she doesn’t get everything and animal cruelty is one she skips over. And she’ll say it again and again?? When she (the YTer I’m talking about her) covered the serial killer who targeted gay men Eleanor just did herself the other day, the YTer would NOT stop talking about the victim’s cat that the killer also harmed. It made me too anxious to watch Eleanor’s video.

The laurel bush you’re likely referring to is very common in English gardens. Laurel has a very long & interesting history from gardens to the one Laurel you can eat (bay) to the Pythia of Delphi. It’s really not odd that a common garden plant would be at a hospital. Its often hedging where you are. It’s odd that a patient had the desire to distill it, much less the means.
I had already heard this story but decided to watch it again because everyone has their unique way of describing what happened. It’s insane that he got away with this for so long 🙈
Eleanor, thank you for educating us on this monster. It’s shame that he used his intelligence and knack for science in such a deadly manner instead of in a more positive way. My thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s families and loved ones.

I like the sound of the teacup poisoner because it sounds sweet but when you hear about it it is very Erie. He just wanted to be feared and not loved. He was probably scared of stabbing or shooting people as that can be traced back to him but that also can happen with poison. You are so great at explaining these crimes ❤

Very crazy how rare male poisoners are compared to other methods and that he not only got into it but found info on two male poisoners before info was widely available. Idk it is weird to me that his parents let him get into all of that.

At 10, I wanted to become a doctor so I could become a coroner so I could work in forensics. This was 1974 so forensics was very different at that point. I was a voracious reader (as were my siblings and parents) and grabbed one of my father's books called Crime and Science, which researched the very beginnings of forensics. This was before DNA so they were mostly using fingerprints, blood-typing, and blood spatter patterns. It described several murder cases and that made me want to help the families of victims and get killers off the street. Was that odd? For most people, probably. I'm also an introvert and am socially awkward. But I've never had the desire to kill anyone. The interest in serial killers, as evidenced by you and the majority of your viewers, is just a coincidence.
And yes, telling people that young that I wanted to be a coroner made people uncomfortable so I started just saying I wanted to be a doctor. That's society teaching a child that lying isn't just okay, it's preferable. Ick.

As to graham youngs death, there might be nothing suspicious about it, he could have inadvertently damaged his own heart over the years poising other people, particularly if he was getting chemicals on his hands while poisoning people.
I am a Gillian Barre survivor, I had it when I was 2 and relapsed when I was 3. I had many many issues but to think this poor man suffered with poisoning and having those nightmare treatments that were never gonna help him.
I have a request of a case for you :) the Leah Croucher Case, this didn’t happen too far away from where I live but have always been so interested in finding out what actually happened in factual evidence and not rumors going around the town :)

It's crazy how much the beginning of this story reminds me of Lizzie Borden. Lizzie (and Graham) both going to a pharmacist and lying in order to obtain deadly poisons, then their entire families _except_ for them coming down with mysterious, severe illnesses that can't be explained other than poisoning - specifically including their father and loving stepmother. Obviously in Lizzie's case she ended up going with straight up axe murder since the poisoning wasn't working, but listening to that beginning part was like listening to the beginning of her story too

You should cover a story here in the US that spanned a few states back in the early 2000's of a man I knew personally, thought of him as a father figure, only to see him on a show here called America's Most Wanted. He was a fugitive for killing his wife of many, many years. They called him the karaoke killer. He went on a crime spree for a couple years but went undetected until I called that show to tell them I knew him, but not as his real name Joseph leroy crouch Jr but by an alias, Jay Nelson.

Hi Eleanor! Thanks for the video! This was definitely a unique case, for sure. Too bad he gives kids with a love of chemistry a bad name, haha! Anyway, the chemical from the matches is white phosphorus, which is toxic. Matches are no longer made with white phosphorus, but red phosphorus, which is nontoxic.

I almost ate belladonna, but luckily I downloaded a plant identifier and found out what it was 😂😂😂 I thought I had wild grapes in my yard, but of course not. Apparently they’re not toxic to birds, but even rubbing against it gave my leg a chemical burn-like rash. They’re easy to kill with weed killer at least
