‘Spinning into Focus’ Technique 4- Using a Diz with Blended Top to Draft Roving off a Blending Board

- This video accompanies my blog post on a technique that I’m calling “Spinning into Focus”. It’s a method for spinning a commercially available multicoloured blended top, breaking it down into 7 - 9 yarns, each yarn becoming less blended and more colourful than the previous yarn.
The idea is that this method can be used to spin yarn for a sweater, scarf, or any large item using several techniques, and you will have a garment where the colours start off muddy, and appear to come into focus as they work their way up, down or across the garment.
Full disclosure - I told John Arbon Textiles about my Spinning into Focus Technique and they very kindly sent me a sweater quantity of fibre to demonstrate my method with. I haven't been compensated financially to use their fibre.
I’m going to use ‘Slack Ma Girdle’ from @JohnArbonTextile’s Appledore range for all of the yarns in this series. The blended Appledore tops can be found here - www.jarbon.com/product/appled...
In this fourth technique, I lay 3 layers of multicoloured blended top onto the blending board and then remove it using the smallest hole in my diz to create roving. With this method I'm making the colours fluctuate down the length of the roving so I should get some subtle variations in colour throughout my yarn. From a distance, the yarn will still appear to be quite muddy but will have pops of colour when you take a closer look.
All of the yarns in this series are chain-plied at the wheel with relatively short chains to try to maintain the original colours as much as possible.
In this video I'm spinning on the Electric Eel Wheel 6 which can be purchased at* -www.dreamingrobots.com/produc...

Thanks. I have the perfect wool to apply these techniques you’ve shared!!❤😊
You are so welcome!
your videos are so relaxing!! ❤
Thank you so much. Spinning is relaxation and meditation for me so I’m glad that comes across in my videos. 🥰
So hypnotic watching this. Very relaxed with the good music
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much for your kind words
That looks so satisfying.
It is!
A fantastic video! I've been struggling with trying to figure out the best way to spin from rolags from the blending board. I like this way so much better.
Thank you! This method will result in a more blended yarn.
If you’re looking to get more colour variations but also want to find an easier way to spin from rolags it often helps to draft them out by hand first to open up the fibres. This gives you a kind of pencil roving which is quite a bit easier to spin from.
You’re amazing
Gosh, bless your heart. Thank you 😊🥰
This is very relaxing, the music is so pleasant🌷
I’m so glad you like it. 🥰
Very interesting to see you do this.I use this method also but remove it sideways first.Blended roving as you are using will ensure a very even colour mix brilliant!
Ooh, interesting! When you say you remove it sideways, do you remove the whole batt or just a vertical length? I'm trying to imagine how this affects the colour.
Love it 😍
Thank you! 😊
I would love a jumper made from this fibre ❤
❤ Thank you! I'm still trying to decide what to do with all of my yarns from this video series. So many ideas...
@@KathrynCraftmehappy weave samples? I would use a half black and half white warp and then weave 2" of each of your different yarns from this series.
Pop different coloured stitch marker on each section and note which is what in your spinning notebook.
This will give you a nice gamp to show the differences.
@@ksisu1324 Ooh, interesting. I hadn’t thought about weaving it. Maybe I’ll give that a go to see how it looks.
