Questionable Blend 6 - Blaze from World of Wool. Splitting the Top Vertically to Avoid Spinning Mud
This video accompanies my blog post on the various ways of spinning ‘Questionable Blends’. I’m using the word ‘questionable’ to describe any vertically blended top that contains colours from more than half of the colour wheel. The kinds of blends that would cast doubt in the minds of even the most experienced of spinners and have them questioning how it might turn out.
Most of the blends I’ve chosen for this series are likely to spin up ever so slightly grey or brown if no attention is paid to colour management, and the colours are allowed to optically blend together.
This particular fibre is Blaze from World of Wool and it's 100% merino wool. I chose this blend as it already contains brown...

Refilling the bobbins on the Kumikreator and testing out different threads. Kumihimo strings
As a fairly new spinner (<1yr), I am so thankful for your videos. (I binged all of them last night) Like any newby, I bought and dyed all the pretty things. And I look at them now and think "what do i even do with this without muddying it? And then the "Why did i buy this? There's so many colors. I can't spin it without losing some of the colors and visible color way." So thank you for making my ADHD/OCD brain comprehend the simple things.
Your videos are so helpful.
This is so useful! Two questions for you: did you rest the singles before putting them through the yarn counter? And did you measure the plied yarn? Just wondering how much plying shortens the plied yarn as compared to the original singles. I've tried putting singles through the yarn counter before, using the EEW as bobbin winder, but I broke the yarn in two or three places 😞
Thank you! Well, as it took me quite a while to spin 6 bobbins, most of the singles were rested for several days, but one bobbin would only have been rested over-night. I didn't measure the plied yarn this time but when I've done this previously, I lost about 11% in length through plying. I wrote quite a detailed post about this when I was testing the Yarn Counter for Maurice here - www.craftmehappy.com/2021/06/using-electric-eel-wheel-yarn-counter.html.
@@KathrynCraftmehappy thank you, I should have looked into your blog myself, it is a treasure-trove after all!
@@lovestoswatch2694 Oh bless you, thank you!
I'm not sure if you already have a video or series but do you or can you make a video about how to start spinning rather buy a drop spindle or how to purchase a cheap spinning wheel whether it's a e spinner or finding a cheap spinning wheel 😅 I really want to learn ❤❤❤
I don’t have any videos like that but I recommend taking a look at @JillianEve’s channel. She has a playlist for absolute beginners and informative videos on regular drop spindles and Turkish spindles - (my favourite is the Turkish spindle but I only turned to drop spindles after spinning solely on wheels and e-spinners for 25 years. Many people find it easier to learn on an e-spinner or treadle wheel, but a drop spindle is obviously the cheapest option.) A lot of new spinners are able to find a cheap spinning wheel on Facebook marketplace but I would always recommend seeing it in person. Sadly there are a lot of scammers claiming to sell spinning wheels that they don’t own… there are also a lot of ‘spinning wheel shaped objects’ that were only ever built to be decorative so you need to exercise caution. Buying a second hand Ashford wheel is a good starter wheel as they’re fairly beginner friendly, more affordable, and the parts are pretty easy to get hold of. As for e-spinners. The Dreaming Robots Electric Eel Wheels are the most affordable spinning wheels, treadle or otherwise. The current Nano 2.0 is the smallest and cheapest wheel around but I would recommend waiting a little while for the future Nano 2.1 as it will have a couple of features which will make it a lot more beginner friendly. The Electric Eel Wheel 6.1 is much bigger than the Nano and is much more versatile. It’s very easy to ‘grow out’ of the Nano but only a tiny number of high-speed long draw spinners grow out of the Electric Eel Wheel 6.1 I love the Electric Eel Wheels, but I am very biased!
Hiya, got up as far as 12.18. Then you have obviously plyed the 2 threads..how.? The end result showed many pure colours, with only a few mixed. 2 bobbins? Centre pull ply? I’d love to know more. Thanks
Oh I’m sorry. This was chain-plied at the wheel to try to keep the colours as clean and fresh as possible.
that was s0 helpful😊
Thank you so much!
Would it be bad to do one end with a flower and the other end plain clear? It seems like that may allow you to have the best of both worlds, but I don’t know if the front and the back and weighing different amounts would be an issue for some reason.
I’ve actually started using it like this and, as you say, it does give me the best of both worlds. There doesn’t seem to be any issues with the difference in weights.
A fantastic video! I've been struggling with trying to figure out the best way to spin from rolags from the blending board. I like this way so much better.
Thank you! This method will result in a more blended yarn. If you’re looking to get more colour variations but also want to find an easier way to spin from rolags it often helps to draft them out by hand first to open up the fibres. This gives you a kind of pencil roving which is quite a bit easier to spin from.
Thank you very much!
You’re very welcome!
The colours are sooo pretty !!!
Thank you!☺️
Hola conque otros hilos puedo ponerle a los carretes para poder trabajarlos
Yes, the instructions say not to, but as long as you wind on neatly and don’t go past the ends of the bobbins it works well. You can read about the threads I used here - www.craftmehappy.com/2023/10/refilling-kumikreator-bobbins-and.html
My wife asked me to watch this video bc she is working on a similar project (an ombre blend) and she wasn't understanding your arithmetic. I think the confusion stems from (1) your use of a different blend in your graph example vs your practical example, and (2) your mixing of what the percentages actually represent between your graph example and your practical example. - In the graph example, you indicate 87% yellow to 13% pink, on blend 13. However, in the practical example you appear to be on blend 6, which is 39% yellow to 61% pink. This is because the 4.3% yellow to 6.7% pink you show on screen during the practical example equates to 39% yellow to 61% pink, since the 4.3% yellow and 6.7% pink make up 11% of the total fiber in the blend. - I think you should have shown your work, like the math teachers used to say 🙂 - Also, to skip the graph you could just divide 100 by 15 to get 6.67%, and have the yellow percentage step up from 0% by that amount, while the pink percentage steps down from 100% by that amount. So yellow:pink 0:100, 6.6:93.4, 13.2:86.8, etc.
Thank you for your feedback. I agree, it is a little confusing that I’m demonstrating a different ratio than the one earlier highlighted. That is a fair criticism. This video was more about demonstrating my blending technique and sharing how to read the graph. I have actually shown my work in a separate blog post and you can read more about the process here - www.craftmehappy.com/2022/01/linear-blending-wool-gradient.html It just wasn’t possible to convey my whole technique in a video and have people still want to watch it till the end 😂 The whole point of my linear blending technique is that it makes the maths a whole lot easier, and you can choose to use any number of blends you like and start at whichever point on the graph you like. I’ve learned that a lot of creative people will switch off when you start talking maths and this is a more visual way of breaking down the maths involved in blending a gradient.
@@KathrynCraftmehappy yes i agree about creative types and maths 🤣 and i understand that this is a more visual way of representing the linear blending concept. Good job there BTW; know your audience and all that 👍

Cool! And I feel like your videography skills are better. :)
Thank you, I really appreciate that!
I adore this project. It is super interesting!
Oh wonderful, I’m so glad you’re finding it useful!
It looks so pretty! I've never spun from the fold before, and your video has me wanting to get one of these stripey blends so I can try this color separation for myself.
You should give it a try! Bamboo is not the easiest to start with though, blue faced Leicester is lovely to work with.
That came out really beautiful!
Thank you! 😊
Very informative.
Oh thank you, I’m so glad you found it useful!
Excellent 😊
Thank you!
Amazing!!!
Isn’t it?! Black and yellow blending into green always surprises me 😀
I use metallic eye shadow powder from Dollar Tree to do this sort of thing
Brilliant, I’ll have to give that a try!
🎉Thank you for sharing your exploration of the materials I had fun with my first round with the K Creator and tried with rainbow embroidery floss. It is quite satisfying to watch the bobbins pop around!
Ooh, rainbow embroidery would look cool! It is quite mesmerising isn’t it?!
An amazing video! Thanks for the info on 'diz'ing. Please could i ask if it would be better to just buy the solid colours to save separating each top?
Thank you so much! Yes, absolutely. This video accompanies my blog series on the various ways of spinning commercially available multicoloured blends to avoid the colours blending together into mud. This was quite an extreme experiment. It would be much easier and quicker to just buy 7 different colours and run strips down the blending board.
Interested method to chain ply!
Thank you!
so the colors are 2 different pieces?
Kind of. The colours are made up of thousands of fibres and I have twice as many magenta fibres compared to yellow ones. When I blend them enough, you will stop seeing two separate colours and they will optically blend into one colour.
Well done ❤
Thank you!
from Gerry- Your work is amazing. There was a lot of effort but the results are worth it. Thanks for sharing and God bless.

Oh thank you so much, that means a lot to me!
Thank you for this video, I have some pastel variegated silk that I bought matching superfine merino to go with it and have been puzzling how to get that repeatable colour mix. Thanks to this video I know what to do now thank you.
So glad it was helpful!

Hi Kathryn, I hope you're OK xx ❣️❣️❣️❣️ Thankyou so much for sharing this video, it was both interesting and inspirational. 🌟✨️ I have some fibre that has a lot if colours in it. I wasn't sure how I would Spin it, but your "hints and tips " are always helpful and getting us thinking " outside the box ". Thanks again for sharing your videos and your expertise, both are very much appreciated .🌟✨️🎉 Hope you have a Wonderful Weekend 🌞🌝 Happy Spinning Fibre Friend 🎡🐑🥰 Take care and stay safe Lots of love and Big Hugs Jen xxxx ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🫂🫂🫂🫂⚘️⚘️⚘️
Hi Jen I'm so glad you've found it helpful. Your kind words are very much appreciated, thank you. I hope you have a great week. Kathryn xXx
Thanks for the great tip about splitting the fold in half. That would not only keep the colors together for effectively but also keep the spin more manageable.
Oh you're very welcome! It was the only way I could get the colours to stop all merging into one muddy blend.
Can the bobbins hold enough to make a 30 inch cord?
Sadly not, unless your cord is extremely fine. I found that a full bobbin of regular 1mm Chinese knotting cord would make a bracelet that wrapped twice around my wrist. Embroidery thread made a cord that was quite a bit longer but not close to 30 inches.
Thank you@@KathrynCraftmehappy
Spettacolare! Complimenti!!
Thank you so much!
I would use this concept if I had that fiber that I just HAD to own and then couldn't bear to use. But knowing me, I'd use the fiber to buy the individual colors and keep the original fiber to ogle! Best of both worlds lol. Have a fabulous today, Steph
Ha, sometimes the fibre is just too pretty to use. I can relate! Take care
I just bought my eel wheel 6.1. You make it look so easy and fluent, like a ballet. I love watching other people spin. Thank you for the great videos
Oh thank you so much. You’re very welcome! Practice makes progress! I’ve been spinning so long now, it’s become muscle memory. I like to spin for relaxation so I try to keep my movements slow and smooth.
You’re amazing
Gosh, bless your heart. Thank you 😊🥰
You changed my life! Never ever would I have thought to chain ply the ball❤❤❤❤
Oh bless you, making a chain-plied ball is one of my favourite plying methods.
Thanks. I have the perfect wool to apply these techniques you’ve shared!!❤😊
You are so welcome!
The banging it on the table to make it liquid was truly science in action, love it!! 🎨
Thank you! That’s my favourite part too 😀
Meep!!! Its muppet hair!
😂
The stop motion style is very cool!
Ha, thank you! It takes a bit of effort but it’s very satisfying.
This is mind blowing! Black and yellow make green? It must be magic!!
Yep, and I’ve just discovered that pink and black make lilac!
I’m amazed you had the patience for this!
Ha, I find playing with colour relaxing. I haven’t got the patience for other spinning related activities like hand carding, or scouring fleece, but I find this meditative and very rewarding.
@@KathrynCraftmehappy I enjoy making rolags as well, but I don’t tear roving into strips.
@@ColorsofHopeCraftsASMR honestly, tearing roving into strips wouldn’t be my first choice for a big project either, but I’ve included it because not everyone owns a blending board, and it does result in more distinct colour changes.
Another amazing video. You are so patient and I've guessing that this is like a meditation to you.
Thank you so much! Yes, playing with colour is my therapy. It’s my happy place.
