The 'abandoned Rothschild chateau' that you mentioned, is currently in the process of being restored by the state and the library is one of several rooms still intact with it's original interior paneling and book cases. (It is quite common throughout France, for unscrupulous antique dealers to personally write Rothschild on various items, to associate a false provenance in hopes of increasing the value/price uneducated customers will pay, even though antique dealers are required by law, to present a legitimate paper trail at the point of sale, to provide customers with the history of ownership and provenance for insurance purposes.)

It's amazing how your channel has become a vital part of my day. After having 40 years of employee management experience I want to commend you on your management skills. Watching you give the team the proper equipment for the task and you follow that with helping to see that they are housed properly, you see that everyone is comfortable with the work and it makes it a pleasure to watch. That's a great idea of making offices. It takes the clutter and chaos of an office out of your home so you can relax more in your own home. Going to a different location for your work also provides structure and routines to your daily life.
Maybe one of the offices can be a playroom for the boys when Gwen and/or you are working in your offices. I hope you have alarms and security cameras around since you are bringing in antiques and quality equipment. Can't wait to see all the restorations you will be doing!!

I hope Ryan comes back and helps install the library. It really is massive. When you showed it staged in that room it looked like it was meant to be there. Once you get the office spaces redecorated i think it will lose the hospital feeling. Really like the spiral stairs on the fire escape, have ever since you first showed the convent. We miss seeing the boys and life at the Chateau, but i know you are very busy at the convent project.
Billy, what a buy that library was. I wouldn't have walked away from that either. Unbelievable, how something so precocious sold for such a low price. In Australia, I would hate to think how much that would have sold for. I have an antique book case that is smaller than the ones you showed and that is valued at about $2500. Crazy when you do the maths. The value of wood alone would exceed what you paid for it. The beauty and sheer magnificence of its size - priceless. Well done for saving such an historical object. What a huge library-would be fun to fill it and have community come to check out books, much like a public library, but yours could be membership driven for in-person or mailing-cool idea! Having it near another public use area would be sweet. With your offices area, it would be neat if there was a daycare area for your Littles that someone manages-it could even be opened up to having a few outside kids come in for a small intimate daycare space. So many ideas!

I really enjoyed this vlog the behind the scenes. I have been on Holiday so i have to catch up on my many vlogs i belong to on You Tube. That is really a good investment putting in security cameras. I hope you have an ac unit for the convent it has been awfully hot throughout Europe this summer.
Called it! First time seeing the library I knew it was something historic. The courtyard looks great with the grass and the blooming roses. The convent has a great plan that can actually work with different commercial applications. The center and left wings could be a boutique hostel. Right wing could be for offices, studios, common lounge, library, cafe, and the chapel could be a community gallery/cafe if you are so inclined. The possibilities are endless.

Crack'n plan to convert the upper wing into office space. With a little elbow grease that area can be up and running quickly. Then to tackle the other monsterous jobs😉 Your plan to build the _Rothschild_ into the convent, will be a harmonious blending of understated elegance - perfect for the style and history of the convent. Amazing to see the progress you’ve made on the grounds and courtyard. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, look at video you made when you first took possession of the property.
Wouldn’t it be great if a historian hears about the library and can source a picture of the original installation? Perhaps a member of the family has some family pics taken in the library. Wonder when it was dismantled?
If I may suggest, to make the hallways look less creepy more aesthetic to the eye, I would recommend making the ceiling part curved rounded like arches instead of if being squared. Maybe have it all carved in to make it rounded. It will also make the ceiling appear higher which is always better than low ceilings.

I love going back to the first videos of the very overgrown courtyard, when you first got the keys to the convent & now seeing the recent beautiful transformation of the courtyard. Absolutely astounding how beautiful you've made it!
One of the problems of re-use of architectural salvage is that paneling, cabinets, and trim are typically designed for a room of a particular set of dimensions (length, width, and height). Unless your target room is the same, including where doors and windows are, you're going to have to cut into it, re-work it, and attempt to make matching pieces. So, let's look at the library. The stated size is 100 sq meters. That could be 10 meters by 10 meters, or more likely, it's a rectangle, like 8 meters by 12.5 meters, or even 9 meters by 11 meters. Generally, you place the door and window pieces of the salvage first, then fit the rest of the pieces, attempting to avoid cuts. This is where you find that some pieces of the paneling are lighter in color than others, due to sun fade. This is also where you find that you've got a number of smaller pieces left, but areas that are larger than those pieces, so you're now looking at extensive work joining these pieces together. In general, you avoid all of this by fitting that 100 sq meters of paneling, cabinets, and trim by putting them into a room significantly smaller than the original, so that you can use the pieces you have effectively without extensive re-work. This is the same problem one encounters when re-using kitchen cabinets. While they looked great in the original owner's house, the geometry of your house is different and you're going to have to compromise on the layout of your kitchen in order to use the cabinets effectively.
What a terrific space for your offices. It will be good for you and Gwen and Michael to each have your own space, and have them separate from the chateau. You all have the energy! I also love the library, as large as it is. Agree, store it there until you have time to focus on how much goes where. If it truly is from a Rothschild estate in Paris, there would be photos somewhere to document the various rooms in the estate. Always the mysteries! What a wonderful episode, full of hopes and plans.

It's a sad ting that no books came with the library. Imagine the first editions that the Rothchilds would have owned. You will hate me for saying this . Billy, but I am dying to see that metal circular stair sandblasted clean, decorative elements added and then painted a nice black.... because you don't have enough to do! LOL

I saw a documentary on the Rothchild’s and an interview of the old patriarch was done sitting in a large library, maybe Paris.
The library will look amazing when completed. The craftsmanship is wonderful and will be such a compliment to the convent when reassembled.

I really enjoyed this vlog the behind the scenes. I have been on Holiday so i have to catch up on my many vlogs i belong to on You Tube. That is really a good investment putting in security cameras. I hope you have an ac unit for the convent it has been awfully hot throughout Europe this summer.

Called it! First time seeing the library I knew it was something historic. The courtyard looks great with the grass and the blooming roses. The convent has a great plan that can actually work with different commercial applications. The center and left wings could be a boutique hostel. Right wing could be for offices, studios, common lounge, library, cafe, and the chapel could be a community gallery/cafe if you are so inclined. The possibilities are endless.

Crack'n plan to convert the upper wing into office space. With a little elbow grease that area can be up and running quickly. Then to tackle the other monsterous jobs😉 Your plan to build the _Rothschild_ into the convent, will be a harmonious blending of understated elegance - perfect for the style and history of the convent. Love the video. Once again great music selection for the scenes. Love the library. Can't imagine how someone could part with it. The wonder in the eyes of a worker in 1850 who might have owned a single book, coming into the library and seeing thousands. I would have been in heaven. Great work!

Amazing to see the progress you’ve made on the grounds and courtyard. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, look at video you made when you first took possession of the property.
Wouldn’t it be great if a historian hears about the library and can source a picture of the original installation? Perhaps a member of the family has some family pics taken in the library. Wonder when it was dismantled?
I think they owned more than one chateau too. Im sure that there is a video on RUclips about one of them.Not sure if its the same one though.

If I may suggest, to make the hallways look less creepy more aesthetic to the eye, I would recommend making the ceiling part curved rounded like arches instead of if being squared. Maybe have it all carved in to make it rounded. It will also make the ceiling appear higher which is always better than low ceilings.

One of the problems of re-use of architectural salvage is that paneling, cabinets, and trim are typically designed for a room of a particular set of dimensions (length, width, and height). Unless your target room is the same, including where doors and windows are, you're going to have to cut into it, re-work it, and attempt to make matching pieces.
So, let's look at the library. The stated size is 100 sq meters. That could be 10 meters by 10 meters, or more likely, it's a rectangle, like 8 meters by 12.5 meters, or even 9 meters by 11 meters. Generally, you place the door and window pieces of the salvage first, then fit the rest of the pieces, attempting to avoid cuts. This is where you find that some pieces of the paneling are lighter in color than others, due to sun fade. This is also where you find that you've got a number of smaller pieces left, but areas that are larger than those pieces, so you're now looking at extensive work joining these pieces together. In general, you avoid all of this by fitting that 100 sq meters of paneling, cabinets, and trim by putting them into a room significantly smaller than the original, so that you can use the pieces you have effectively without extensive re-work.
This is the same problem one encounters when re-using kitchen cabinets. While they looked great in the original owner's house, the geometry of your house is different and you're going to have to compromise on the layout of your kitchen in order to use the cabinets effectively.

What a terrific space for your offices. It will be good for you and Gwen and Michael to each have your own space, and have them separate from the chateau. You all have the energy! I also love the library, as large as it is. Agree, store it there until you have time to focus on how much goes where. If it truly is from a Rothschild estate in Paris, there would be photos somewhere to document the various rooms in the estate. Always the mysteries! What a wonderful episode, full of hopes and plans.

It's a sad ting that no books came with the library. Imagine the first editions that the Rothchilds would have owned. You will hate me for saying this . Billy, but I am dying to see that metal circular stair sandblasted clean, decorative elements added and then painted a nice black.... because you don't have enough to do! LOL

The convent has become so amazing already and now with the libary ....wow. Can't wait to see it in its glory again. And wow it is massive. Even when Ryan found out how to set them into matching units I didn't had the size of it noticed. My that will be so awsome when it is set back and filled with books. A place where I would love to spent times in. Hopefully Ryan comes back to help you with it. And the idea of the offices for all of you sounds great also as then you can enjoy your family time at the chateau and work at the convent.
