It was fun to hear the commentary by James Allen when Michael had that slide, "He has blown it, he needs to keep it together for a reasonable grid position" and then eat his words when Michael went P1
I do remember this pole lap quite well as a 9 year kid. Watching it again and seeing how Michael was able to convert this scrappy lap into pole position was amazing and as always nailing it in the final sector. He did had the car but not many drivers could pulled something like this out of the bag.
I remember how idiotic the ITV commentary was on this lap "OH NO HE's BLOWN IT!!" "Raikkonen has made everybody go wobbly trying to beat him" And then Schuey shuts them up :-)
@F1god04 It is not only the oversteer. He need a pointy front. He likes to turn into corners very aggressive and balance the car with the throttle. Unfortunately his Merc is understeering so he can't be fast in corners because the car won't turn in. And when he press the throttle he end up going further outside...just because the front doesn't grip. Sliding the car will kill the tyres...
It wasn't his car, tho. The 2003 Ferrari wasn't at all a class of it's field. Any driver wouldn't even get to be on pole let alone be on the front row after making a slide like this.
2Dante - you make it sound like having TC makes things much easier. Coming out of a slow corner and putting the power down is the easiest skill in F1 racing with or without TC. Its only when the conditions are wet when it gets more tricky for an F1 driver.
I preferred the old yellow OSD, but I personally find it far better these days, a lot more onboard coverage, the FOM have learned a lot over the years, we've even had a few visor cams of late which I hope we see a lot more of. I remember back in the above era being incredibly bored with the coverage as they never really followed the racing, because it was so far behind the ferrari in the lead!
Technically speaking we probably would see more racing like this the more electric f1 gets. Electric engines have max torque all the time, meaning they'll be sliding everywhere and take off like rockets.
It's exciting to see how he uses oversteer to control the car. I had heard that in 2010 he struggled because he couldnt get his car to do that. Never understood what that meant until I saw this. Interesting way of controlling the car.
@SlicertekPictures0 Well...even if they are fluid in set up, the car is specific. So we have naturaly undresteering car (because wheel base, weight distribution, aerodynamics, tyres etc.) and oversteer is complete opposite, so there has to be made many compromises. I believe, when they try to set up the car like Michael need it to be, the car is just too slow. My best guess is that the car is useing the tyres a bit better when understeer and distroing them when oversteer. Everything is connected...
I think he managed to grab the pole after being 4.1 km/h faster than Kimi at 2nd sector.(pause at 0.52 and you can see the speed below the lap time).Anyway, what a lap.
Even if, with that primitive TC we've seen drivers spin out many many times and he kept it together see the speed he is approaching the corner with, fully committed. Plus... Schumi has slided into corners many times from Benneton days and early pathetic poor balanced Ferrari days. This instance was nothing new to him, he always pushed on the limits getting more out of the car (even when its not good enough) than anyone else.
Considering Imola is Ferrari's hometrack (even called Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari), and Mika being even more behind Michael Schumacher in the 2nd split time AND actually driving on the grass for a short while, his pole in Imola is better Kimi was never much of a qualifier and he had a updated 2002 car in 2003, waiting for the 2003 car to be finished Schumacher was no Senna when it comes to qualifying. For those who saw Senna in the turbo years putting a Lotus on 7poles against 3 better teams
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GET BETTER MICHAEL OUR PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU LEGEND!!!
:(
the way schumi brakes into the second corner... goddamn!! praise the man!
It was fun to hear the commentary by James Allen when Michael had that slide, "He has blown it, he needs to keep it together for a reasonable grid position" and then eat his words when Michael went P1
what a great slide at the second corner. michael the master of car control
Sliding into the pole position...rally skills on F1 cars - this is why this guy is a legend!
He is still the master, bring back that sound, the best.
the best driver ever!! j wish he could return
SLIDING LIKE A BOSS. miss these times
His car control was awesome. I'll never forget his reflexes in a racing car. A modern day Tazio Nuvolari.
The entry in the second corner is just awesome! Truly the master!
the master......nuff said!!
What years that were... the crowd always screaming and Schumi always winning.
I do remember this pole lap quite well as a 9 year kid. Watching it again and seeing how Michael was able to convert this scrappy lap into pole position was amazing and as always nailing it in the final sector. He did had the car but not many drivers could pulled something like this out of the bag.

I remember how idiotic the ITV commentary was on this lap "OH NO HE's BLOWN IT!!" "Raikkonen has made everybody go wobbly trying to beat him" And then Schuey shuts them up :-)
For me his 1996 and 1999 Season was his very best. 2000 came close. Great Driver. Legend.

@F1god04 It is not only the oversteer. He need a pointy front. He likes to turn into corners very aggressive and balance the car with the throttle. Just fucking Brilliant
A mistake in turn 1 then a big slide still on pole..??!! True LEGEND . . .
yeah his car was that much better
gabox01 actually it wasn't at all in 2003
It wasn't his car, tho. The 2003 Ferrari wasn't at all a class of it's field. Any driver wouldn't even get to be on pole let alone be on the front row after making a slide like this.
Ya but the car was driven by the driver. In 2003 they only launched the new F2003 car in the 4th race correct, it was one of the fastest
watch 0:19 now!
Oh wonderfoul video hello i am Brasil 😎🇧🇷👏
the sound,,
i love it
2Dante - you make it sound like having TC makes things much easier. Coming out of a slow corner and putting the power down is the easiest skill in F1 racing with or without TC. Its only when the conditions are wet when it gets more tricky for an F1 driver.
Few are born with it fewer know what to do with it
@tderias i dont have a problem with it i just wanted to point out about how much they run wide
0:22 OMG WOW!!
DAT. SOUND.
Bloody hell, please one more year of this type of F1, before 50% electric FIA. SPEED
Technically speaking we probably would see more racing like this the more electric f1 gets. Electric engines have max torque all the time, meaning they'll be sliding everywhere and take off like rockets.
Good point, but they'll probably still sound like Dyson's. Formula E sounds great
Pause 0:21, screenshot it, awesome.
A1 Ring need to come back. It really was an amazing track i miss it.
Fantastic circuit and fantastic driver !!!
what shots went change the gears!
It's exciting to see how he uses oversteer to control the car. I had heard that in 2010 he struggled because he couldnt get his car to do that. Never understood what that meant until I saw this. Interesting way of controlling the car.
0.039 seconds of extraordinary ability
I couldn't put my finger on it....everything looks so damn smooth! It's weird!
0:22 like always, he drifted his car. That was stunned.
@SlicertekPictures0 Well...even if they are fluid in set up, the car is specific. So we have naturaly undresteering car (because wheel base, weight distribution, aerodynamics, tyres etc.) and oversteer is complete opposite, so there has to be made many compromises. Got me in my feels for reals. #KeepFightingMichael
you like rooting for wankers?
nice sound
I think he managed to grab the pole after being 4.1 km/h faster than Kimi at 2nd sector.(pause at 0.52 and you can see the speed below the lap time).Anyway, what a lap.
oreos giros file!
bravo
I miss those crowds...
thid track is the best in the world
@xlefty look at 0:20. Countersteering like a hell
@2Dante not full 100 % TC. only from 2006 it has a 100 % TC on the cars
what a control at 0:21 :O
why did they get rid of this GP it was awesome
Going wide at Turn 1 on that track requires skill, that's the difference to let's say the modern Hockenheimring.
To me it'S 1950-2002, after that sporting rules, TV-coverage and track selection went downhill, only the TV-side has recovered now.
0:30 - 0:36
listen and enjoy
return the sound and v10
bring back THESE days to Formula 1!
austria gp is back!!!!!!!
it's a very straight circuit
0:22 ????????????????? Spiegatemi come si fa.
WOHA!!! if you put this to 240p becomes 60 FPS!!!! however go shumi!
great lap, awesome
(but remember, this car had TC)
Even if, with that primitive TC we've seen drivers spin out many many times and he kept it together see the speed he is approaching the corner with, fully committed. Plus... Schumi has slided into corners many times from Benneton days and early pathetic poor balanced Ferrari days. This instance was nothing new to him, he always pushed on the limits getting more out of the car (even when its not good enough) than anyone else.
WWWWWWWWWWWWWWAW!!!!!!!!!!
@blerand91 everybody went so wide that day..simply because it was faster..
Räikkönen just got to cool guy on last sector
is this a pc game? it looks so totally smooth
No. This is an actual qualifying session in A1 ring circuit. You such Great Legend Michael Schumacher who helped Ferrari from nothing to something.
Considering Imola is Ferrari's hometrack (even called Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari), and Mika being even more behind Michael Schumacher in the 2nd split time AND actually driving on the grass for a short while, his pole in Imola is better
Kimi was never much of a qualifier and he had a updated 2002 car in 2003, waiting for the 2003 car to be finished
Schumacher was no Senna when it comes to qualifying. For those who saw Senna in the turbo years putting a Lotus on 7poles against 3 better teams
Anyone else spend a few seconds thinking "Wait... what part of Albert Park is this now?".
the speed trap has nothing to do in general with the lap time.... especialy when the difference is low.
Ok but that first corner goes out of limits . 🙄 and everybody forgets that
@JonoSenna dude whats your point? as long as everyone can do it without getting penalised, i dont see whats the problem?
I think that was forbidden at the end of 2001 or 2002.
0:10 fuck track limits
except the first corner :P
San Marino yes, but Magny Cours' races were always more processional and predictable than Barcelona's
no nothing is more processional than barcelona not even boring layout magny cours
