  • After 1.5 years and 25,000 clicks here is my review of the GFX 100s. I used it at weddings, engagement sessions, family sessions, and portrait sessions and took it to Iceland and Canada. This is without a doubt the best photography camera I've ever used. It's big slow and beautiful.

    I love the GFX100S. Great image quality, size is not too bad for such a large sensor camera. I did a straight comparison to the Hasselblad X2D and decided to keep my Fuji system and buy more lenses for it. No regrets...

    Thanks for a great review on what looks a fantastic camera you are also very modest about ur pictures anyway I just bought Gfx50s (i) yesterday - the lack of IBIS is a big challenge with my other XF system having this - it’s a very different beast to the XF series so think it’s going to take a long time to get used to also a bit of saving for GF glass 110 😄

      Yes. GF glass is pricy. Adapting is the way to go for the most part.

    I have to get the 100 s because I have to make prints of my paintings. I want to see on the print what I see when I stand close to the painting. With 24 mp I can not print bigger than 50 cm. If I print landscape's I can, but paintings are much harder.

    • @RedShiftedDollar
      @RedShiftedDollar Год назад +2

      Pixel shift multishoot on the 100s will get you 400mp images plus it improves color information at the same time. It's a bit finnicky because any tiny motion or change in light in any of the 16 shots it takes will ruin the image. But when it works it's amazing. Plus the dynamic range and 16 bit tonality accurately record even the tiniest differences in color. The color reproduction will be on point. This'll get you 230 cm prints at 300 dpi. If your originals are smaller than 230 cm then it'll be superhuman microscope vision.
      But first you might get good results taking a planar panorama with your 24mp camera and stitching it all together in lightroom.

      The 45 mm is a solid lens but one I rarely use. I'd rather use the Canon EF 50mm pancake lens. It's lighter an a bit wider. I only use it for some magazine work.

    One of the best niche cameras out there. portrait shooting works great. anything moving... not so much. The Sony sensor is soooo big its hard not to get photos with no roll. I'm interested in the canon which is rumored to be coming out, because the sensor size is a bit smaller and the roll should be much less

    Good job on this review. Just started following you. Have you had much experience with the GFX50S II ? If so, I'd be curious of what you think the pros & cons are to upgrading the 50sII to the 100s, aside from the obvious: resolution bump, better focus, vertical grip option, cost.

    • @ThePhotographerGuy
      @ThePhotographerGuy  Месяц назад +1

      Thanks! The only con on the GFX 50S II was the autofocus hunting a ton with the lack of phase detect. other than that the files were amazing.

    I shoot my 100S predominantly, but I keep my canon for the same reasons as you: speed and hit rate. I've tried to find a magic combination of settings to shoot wildlife or other moving subjects with the GFX to no avail. I hate going back to the Canon layout, which also slows me down for awhile, until it all comes back, lol. Otherwise, I love the GFX 100S. Currently I have the 23mm, 110mm, 250mm, and the 45-100. Of those, the 45-100 is the most reliable and I probably shoot it most, but the 250mm and 110mm, give me striking images. Not sure if I'll keep the 23mm. I'd say the most frustrating thing I've encountered with the 100S are hot pixels. Easy fix, when you catch them. Thanks for sharing your experience.

      Oh nice. That 45-100 sounds fun and I did hold the 250mm and snap a couple photo in the camera store. Wow. what a rad lens. Where can I check out your work? I'd love to see some of your images from the GFX.

    For me, Im a film photographer and really tried to find something similar to film. In 2018 it was gfx 50s for me, really really loved that camera , I used vintage lenses on it. Then end of 2022 I got a new gfx 100 with a nice discount. It’s just a day and night, such a powerful camera compared to GFX 50S.
    Gfx 100 is quite a different camera to gfx 100s after I tried in store. Definitely nice 4K and ibis to make cinematic footage or even cinema.
    I’m using EF 85mm 1.2L II, with fringer adapter (best right now). I highly recommend you this lens ! But yeah you already have the gf 80mm 1.7.. ☺️
    I also use Aero Ektar 178mm 2.8 with Kipon 0.7x focal reducer (to match Pentax 67 crop) and SMC 105mm 2.4 which is an insane lens with impressive image resolution on gfx sensor

    Dude, my OCD is absolutely tearing me up while watching your video. You've got all those lenses sitting around on the table and shelf without caps on the end. All I can think about is dust drifting down and collecting on the glass. Otherwise, I enjoyed the video and the GFX 100s is my dream camera. Hopefully, I'll be able to get one soon but I've been holding off for a version 2 to see if they come out with better AF and a better viewfinder. One day soon, though!

    Hi Ely, I have been shooting the GFX100S for about six months now and beginning to feel much more comfortable with it. It has been a love/hate relationship for me with the GFX. At times I get shots that just blow me away, but it can be a little quirky at times, especially with the AF and shallower relative DOF. I have the GF 20-35mm f/4, the GF 35-70mm f/4.5-5.6, the GF 45mm f/2.8 and the GF 110mm f/2 lenses. I absolutely love the 45mm and the 110mm primes, they are both exceptional lenses. For the 20-35mm, I really wish it was faster, at least f/2.8, especially with nightscapes, although the DR and colour is as good as any wide angle I have owned. The 35-700mm is the only lens that has really been a disappointment. Even though it is a bargain price (for MF lenses), it suffers from lens flare, and just doesn't have the same sharpness and colour unless there is good light. I had planned to use it as a walk about lens, but I find that I rarely use it as the 45mm is so fantastic in comparison, and with the 102 MP resolution, you can crop like crazy before losing IQ. My main camera is a Nikon Z9, and it has taken me a while to get used to the more limited customization, and AF functionality with the GFX. One thing that I do find is, that with the GFX, I am much more deliberate with my shots and put more thought into each exposure, which has made it a more enjoyable experience, I also find that I am focus bracketing more frequently with the GFX, as distortion seems to come into play once you get past f/11, however, it is easily done within the Fuji menu system. The other thing I have found is that, although the GFX100S handles low light pretty well in general, when it does fall off, it literally crashes, especially with long exposure shots over 15secs. For other shooing, the colours are excellent, and the DR is noticeably better than the Z9, even though the Z9's native ISO is 64. I wish there were some more compact, wider f stop lenses available. For me, buying into the GFX system was like buying a sports car, my first demo weekend use of the camera blew me away and it was a bit of an impulse purchase. It is an awesome camera, but after spending almost $10K, it is awesome enough to justify the added expense of medium format, and having to support two camera systems. Overall I am still one the fence about the GFX100S, but for now, I have committed to keeping it for a least a year before making a decision, but like that sports car, it is a wonderful ride! Happy shooting!

      Don't forget that ISO isn't the same everywhere. Fujifilm use the ISO SOS standard whereas Nikon (amongst others) use the ISO REI standard. Google will tell you the scientific differences. But broadly speaking ISO 125 on an SOS camera like the GFX100S is roughly comparable to ISO 64 on a Z8/Z9.

    Thanks for this video and all your videos on the channel, really appreciate the great insight as I consider purchasing the GFX 100s. I'm just wondering about two things - are you using an external light source, and if so in what proportion (roughly) of the images on show? And, same for hand-held vs tripod - is it all or mostly hand-held and some tripod, or lots of tripod as well? Cheers

    • @ThePhotographerGuy

      I haven't used strobes with the GFX. I only use constant lights for studio portrait work and first dances. I only use a tripod for self portraits with me and my family on a remote. So probably all natural light and handheld for these images.

    Thanks, Ely, for the important information as I'm deciding whether to leave Canon R5 (15-35, 28-70, 85 1.2 DS, 100-500) and instead get the GFX100s (+ GF 32-64mm and GF 80mm f/1.7) as a counter value. I'd like to ask for your opinion, is the difference in quality (not speed) so significant - to leave the R5 and get the GFX 100s? Is there a "WOW" difference between the images? (For financial reasons, I can't have both systems.)
    I know the GFX is not fast. I know the R5 is an absolute universal, but the GFX is very tempting. I don't shoot rally or sports. For me, the priority is weddings, architecture, street photography, and portraits).
    Thanks a lot and looking forward to more videos (I'm subscribed)!

      Hi Filip, I think the biggest difference is being able to use the film profiles and photograph in 16 bit. I love the Fuji colors and you can push the colors further. For landscapes i'd choose the GFX. I use the R5 for most of my work since it generally requires a good AF system. If you don't need a good AF system the GFX is an amazing choice for colors and super high resolution.

    • @locophoto6881
      @locophoto6881 Год назад

      I can help too if you don't mind another set of inputs.....keep your R5 no question....weddings don't benefit from the GFX advantages of smoother tonalities and higher resolution....nor does street photography....the architecture could in terms of the resolution and a more beautiful sky in the arch shots that include some sky with varying brightness levels......but the focus system is nowhere near good enough for peace of mind autofocus on high value shoots high consequence shoots like a wedding...you don't want to miss too many critical shots on a wedding.....so the decision is pretty straightforward ..plus it's very difficult to get anything like a 100-500 lens coverage for the GFX...there just isn't much for long telephoto/long zoom even adapted....but....if you don't even really use that lens, or others.....you could pick up a refurb R6 for $1299, use EF glass instead of RF glass, and with the difference remaining pick up a GFX100s used and buy a Fringer adaptor to use some of the EF glass and other glass for a very formidable GFX system for the architecture and portraits

    I bought the X-H2 in early October. Finally went to print landscapes and learned that at 300 DPI, 20x30 inches is the most I'll be able to do. That was a massive letdown. I want to print 40x60. Long story short, just pulled the trigger on the 100s with two lenses (one factory refurbished for about 40% off, and the other just on sale at fujifilm for 50% off). I had no idea I'd be getting into medium format this "soon" but now I see that I have a real use case for it. I'll be selling the X-H2 and some of my expensive X-mount lenses that will actually cover a lot of the cost. FF cameras cost more, and a Leica Q2 at 42 megapixels cost about a grand less than the body... Lot of value, here.

    • @ThePhotographerGuy

      You can get away with a lot when printing, depending on viewing distance. I have had some 20 megapixel photos printed 24x36" that look great. Full frame or medium format will help with a 40x60 though.

    Ely, thoroughly enjoyed watching a few of your videos this afternoon and subscribed. I currently have a Fujifilm XT4 and all the best lenses (8-16, new 18, 16-55 f2.8, new 33, new 56 and the 90) and an x100v, the latter seems to be getting most use. I shoot the family and dogs, and trips to urban landscape and holiday vacations. We are trying to travel more this years and I hope to retire soon to travel even more! However, never happy and always faced with GAS, I am considering adding / switching to either Leica Q2 and / or a GFX100 (I guess the 50 would n’t be worth it). I was in London this week and got to handle both the Q2 and the Fuji 100 with the 20-35 and 110 which I would get first to ‘bookend’ the Leica 28 (but we all know it’s more like 25 or 26 mm). I thinking about the Leica Q2 as my EDC and the 100s for when I go out on serious photography trips. I think the only thing stopping me pulling the trigger on the Q2 is the Q3, but that Fuji 100 s is huge with the lenses I’m after and I’m worried it’ won’t get off the shelf enough. So, the question at the end of the long essay is, could you live with the Q2 as your only camera?

    • @ThePhotographerGuy
      @ThePhotographerGuy  Год назад +1

      I think the Q2 would be great as a travel lens when i'm with my family. It's simple and easy to use. When I'm with my family I'm generally carrying my kid a good amount, so anything with multiple lenses is a bit difficult. If I am traveling with just my wife or solo, I generally have at least three lenses with me. For all of my work I have about 5-6 lenses with me.
