If you've ever lost someone you loved deeply, then you can relate to 'he took my last chance of happiness' and 'I want him to hurt'. Until you go through a grieving and healing process, that is indeed what it feels like.
Simple, poignant, stirring. More emotional than any other version I've heard. Timeless. Deserving of a Grammy, or at least preserved in Congressional Library, as should every Bacharach song.

This is one of the great songs specifically written for the soundtrack of the movie Grace Of My Heart. Amazing song writers like Joni Mitchell, Lesley Gore, J. Mascus and more. Although it's still an awesome version, the CD actually has it's writers, Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach doing this song. I recommend it highly.
In all due respect to EC and BB, it's still inexplicable that only their version made the soundtrack. WTF? Illeana's version is pivotal to whole movie. Why not do an Oz soundtrack and have someone but Judy sing over the rainbow?

Strangely, her voice is very close to Illeana Douglas' speaking voice. They got an almost perfect match on that and I can see why people would assume it's the actress singing it.
Of course, you are right about that, long-run. But in the immediate wake of someting that truly breaks a person's heart, these lyrics are really very accurate. I especially think "I"m only human, I want him to hurt" is very raw.

You should check your facts too. Burt Bacarach and Elvis Costello wrote this song together over the phone. Costello in Dublin and Bacharach in LA. It clearly has Bacharach's sound...listen to 60's music by Dionne Warwick to hear similar tunes. The lyrics go both ways dependent on who is singing it.
You are a very strong person, which is admirable. Not everyone faces heartbreak with such strngth. Therefore, see call for it from other sources. Good for you, to be so strong in who you are! Compassion to those who aren't there, yet.
Actually I think you should check YOUR facts as if you do you will find that the great songwriter BURT BACARACH wrote the song and intended it to be sung by a woman, hence the lyric " maybe i was washed out like a lip print on his shirt".
Beautiful song by Burt Bacharach I love Elvis Costello’s version too but the movie (Grace Of My Heart) was very weird & very very loosely based on real people & situations. Great song by a master of song writers!

I'm used to hearing the Elvis Costello version which I think is sung more hauntingly beautiful. love the fluglehorn and the rawness behind it. she truncated a lot of the ad libs and sings it kind of coldly in comparison. Nice though.

Sometimes when you hear and grow to love one version of a song, any other version seems like blasphemy. Considering that Elvis wrote it (with Burt Bacharach), you might want to give it a second chance. I don't hear the pitch issues or any of the strain you mention (I'm a musician). Sometimes expectations can diminish the appreciation of different interpretations. Perhaps your ears will work better if you open your mind a little. Peace.
