@@cyndimoring9389 It wasn't a popular collaboration for many Bacharach fans, they felt Costello didn't have the right pedigree. But his voice has enormous character.
In today’s commercial music environment I don’t think people realize just how incredible this is from both a songwriting standpoint but an arranging and performance standpoint. I mean, this collaboration is just amazing.
@@nfornethat’s illuminating… I had no idea burt fans felt that way. When I first heard this album I thought this has got to be one of the great heartbreak albums of all time, because I can’t fathom the quality of an album that would beat this. I thought costello’s raw intensity was the perfect foil for burt’s sensibilities
With today's news I learned that a few weeks ago the Elvis Costello web site announced a deluxe compilation The Songs of Bacharach & Costello, with several songs and performances in addition to the fantastic Painted from Memory album. They wrote additional songs for a proposed Painted from Memory musical (with book by comedy TV legend Chuck Lorre!). I already have the Sessions at West 54th DVD performance of, and Bill Frisell's The Sweetest Punch reimagining of, Painted from Memory. It's a brillant adult emotional set of songs. RIP Burt Bacharach, great songwriter, composer, arranger, performer over decades! I Say a Little Prayer.
The craziest, most unexpected genius of a collaboration. I used to listen on my Discman to this album on my 5 mile walks on the path in Princeville Kauai. Imprinted forever…
Individually and together such brilliant songwriters. I was incredibly fortunate to be able to catch (one of the handful of shows from) this very short "Painted from Memory" tour (at the stunning Chicago Theatre) resplendent with a 30 piece orchestra. It was one of the most incredible live performances I've ever witnessed. RIP Burt Bacharach... your vast music catalog and stunning compositions will live on for generations to come🙏🏻
Cannot tell you how the music of Burt Bacharach, Hal David and Dionne Warwick helped me through so many emotional crisis. RIP Mr. Bacharach. You and Mr. David can compose music for all of heaven. 😢
My music hero, BURT BACHARACH. Amazing composer, arranger, pianist, conductor, accompanist and producer. Burt had this all. The way he composed was unique. Timesignatures and intervals were always his trademark. There will never be another composer as BURT was. A deep bow and respect for this great, great man! Thank you so much Burt for all the great songs! R.I.P. my music hero! 😢😢
I get nervous every time a celebrity interview pops up here. I immediately check to see if they are still alive. Unfortunately once again they have passed away. RIP Burt, thanks for all the great music.
I’ll never forget the first time I saw & heard & this song (Live on Letterman) ♥️ I ran straight out & bought the Burt Bacharach/Elvis Costello CD the very next day & played the heck out of it !!
Maestro RIP You were so so loved a genius kind humble and you have always be 😀 effortlessly "cool" 😎 I adored your beauty This one saddens me so but God Burt Thank you for your beyond beautiful arrangements and melodies One of a rare club of Super gifted gems Elvis is brilliant too love his compositions and voice too 💜🙏🎉❤️. 🎉💙
Elvis was probably thinking “I can’t believe I get to write and sing with an icon like Burt”. Not that Elvis hasn’t had success, but Bacharach and David basically defined sixties popular song writing and created multiple masterpieces of songwriting.
Now I have nothing, so God give me strength 'Cause I'm weak in her wake And if I'm strong I might still break And I don't have anything to share That I won't throw away into the air That song is sung out This bell is rung out She was the light that I'd bless She took my last chance at happiness So God give me strength God give me strength I can't hold onto her, God give me strength When the phone doesn't ring And I'm lost in imagining Everything that kind of love is worth As I tumble back down to the earth That song is sung out This bell is rung out She was the light that I'd bless She took my last chance at happiness So God give me strength God if she'd grant me her indulgence and decline I might as well, wipe her from my memory Fracture the spell, as she becomes my enemy Maybe I was washed out like a lip-print on my shirt See, I'm only human, I want her to hurt I want her I want her to hurt Since I lost the power to pretend That there could ever be a happy ending That song is sung out This bell is rung out She was the light that I'd bless She took my last chance at happiness So God give me strength God give me strength Wipe her from my memory I might as well God give me strength God give me strength I might as well
For "God Give Me Strength" have a look at Elvis as the song ends and the crowd starts applauding, he really seems as though he was transported to another place during the song and gradually "came back to earth" during the audience response.
That was wonderful. YT suggested the Sonny and Cher reunion after I watched this. I’d love some staff memories on that huge cultural event, maybe Cher can record some thoughts by herself and flog her current main charity. Cher is a uniquely American character. Not only did she think Mount Rushmore was a natural rock formation until she was 18, but she was willing to admit it in a Playboy interview. Who does that? And she’s started charities for the troops and for animals. She used to call C-SPAN’s morning program during the Iraq war to collect money for helmets for the troops that needed them. Thanks.
Costello poured his heart and soul into the rendition it took him a few moments to zone out after finishing the song. A great collaboration between a composer of iconic ballads and its interpreter.
The original version of “God Give Me Strength” from the movie “Grace of My Heart” sung by Kristin Vigard is THE one .. she owns that song no matter who wrote it
R.I.P. Burt Bacharach - one of the 20th century's most prolific and well-respected songwriters.
I can’t watch him play because it’s so so cringe. Why does he do those movements? David Foster looks perfectly normal, when h3 plays/ directs
Few artists have ever made me cry as these two have done. This morning the tears won't stop. Rest in peace Burt Bacharach
I agree.
Wow. The horns and strings,so Burt. Elvis, so passionate. Rip, Burt. Burt has given us so much beautiful music over the years.
Painted from memory came out of nowhere and is a masterpiece
And it’s 200 on vinyl I could cry right now seriously
and I thought I knew everything about Bacharach. I had no idea about the album or this collaboration. He just kept writing and writing.

The album they did together, Painted by Memory, is fantastic.
They worked on a musical based on it, the recent deluxe compilation has more songs. Bring tissues!
One of the most hauntingly beautiful pieces of music

Musical masterpieces by BB and EC. It's one of my favorite CDs - Painted from Memory.
this album made me love music in the best way when i was 17

legendary composer and thank you for giving with us with your awesome music, RIP.
Chills and goosebumps, two musical greats.
R.I.P. Burt! This is one of me fav songs of all time. It would've won the Oscar if the film had been seen more!
This was a great moment. I loved any duet with Burt. And Elvis...his voice for the ages. Thanks for sharing.
Look at Elvis' face there at the end of God Give Me Strength...he's in the zone...that's the real stuff right there.
yes

❤ Wow!
I saw Elvis Costello as an opening act for The Police. He tore the place up.
Same here. In Dallas.
Upstate New York
What a great song vocals outstanding RIP. BB.
Painted From Memory floored me.
Perfect from start to finish!
Freaking INCREDIBLE!
RIP Burt.
I’ll never forget the first time I saw & heard & this song (Live on Letterman) ♥️ I ran straight out & bought the Burt Bacharach/Elvis Costello CD the very next day & played the heck out of it !!
When I get drunk, I listen to classical, musicals, and this song.
I can't help but cry when I hear this. Since the first time.
Mesmerising music……just so emotionally captivating…….ohhhhhh and the songwriters both geniuses…….and here together….wow!
R.I.P. Burt Bacharach, quite a songwriter!
RIP Burt Bacharach My Idol!!!🙏🙏🙏
Gee I really loved that. Elvis really had a fab voice back in the day and Burt was so passionate with his music. RIP Burt.
His music helped define the fabric of my youth and has continued to enrich my life…RIP
Every time I hear the trumpets with that melody I know it’s a Burt song…
BB brought out some killer vocals from EC he will be missed
"well that's really something- isn't it?" lol, Dave
Great musician of American dream. Thank you. Your song's in my mind. Forever ❤️
Burt used those flugelhorns as a signature sound for decades. I hear them on other records sometimes as a homage to him.
Beautiful album
Thank you Letterman team for including both show dates (1997-02-25, 1998-09-28) in the video description 🖤
So many amazing songs.... 🙏
lovely. moving.

This man helped US making our days
Godspeed Burt Bacharach
Now I have nothing, so God give me strength
'Cause I'm weak in her wake
And if I'm strong I might still break
And I don't have anything to share
That I won't throw away into the air
That song is sung out
This bell is rung out
She was the light that I'd bless
She took my last chance at happiness
So God give me strength
God give me strength
I can't hold onto her, God give me strength
When the phone doesn't ring
And I'm lost in imagining
Everything that kind of love is worth
As I tumble back down to the earth
That song is sung out
This bell is rung out
She was the light that I'd bless
She took my last chance at happiness
So God give me strength
God if she'd grant me her indulgence and decline
I might as well, wipe her from my memory
Fracture the spell, as she becomes my enemy
Maybe I was washed out like a lip-print on my shirt
See, I'm only human, I want her to hurt
I want her
I want her to hurt
Since I lost the power to pretend
That there could ever be a happy ending
That song is sung out
This bell is rung out
She was the light that I'd bless
She took my last chance at happiness
So God give me strength
God give me strength
Wipe her from my memory
I might as well
God give me strength
God give me strength
I might as well
amazing

This is the most musical collaboration I've ever heard. What a tremendous loss.
Costello vibrato is something else!
God I love this performance SO much
R.I.P 🥰❤🙏

Thanks for this. Vale Burt, thanks Elvis C
I was praising Burt last night and playing him and Dionne only to learn this morning that he has passed 😢
MARAVILHA !!!!!!!!!!!!
We'll be missing you Burt! Does anyone know how Mr. Costello is doing? I love this collaboration.
He is playing New York as we speak and paying homage to the great man during his 10 night run.
@@randers40 thanks for the update. I love Elvis Costello.
Wow both amazing
I jist found out about Elvis Costello and these terriific songs I am in love. Elvis Costello is the Tony Bennete and Frank
Sinatra of British music.
But beautiful. RIP BB.

Magic ….stops time
Christ, they nailed these tunes. Look at Burt gettin’ all Stevie Wonder!

Elvis ain't to shaby either
100%! Although Bette does a damn good job too!
RIP initial BB
My favorite version, this and Bette Midler's
I’ll give my two cents worth: They’re brilliant.
Burt wrote the soundtrack of my childhood and even made Costello sound pretty good. Genius.
Lettterman`s obituary service.
Sad but true.
😮 kid's 😊😮😮😮
miss the colob between these two. great talent gone too soon.'
RIP :(
So beautiful, yet I can't help but think if it were Scott Walker singing it...
RIP
These guys just don't perform...the FEEL!
Declan is so uncomfortable out of his Punk shoes , Worth a look though for any pop pickers out there !
Painted 🎨 from memory ✨️ 😮 was modern rubbish 🗑, 👨 😮😮😮😮😊
I can't imagine singing these VERY challenging songs on live TV. The bridge of the second song made me tear up. Great stuff.
Burt Bacharach is good this Elvis Costello awful
