I just did this today and this is the best video for replacing the thermostat/water pump. The most straight forward. I watched the video and typed and printed what he was doing step-by-step. There were some things that the video didn't show or he didn't explain but you just have to fill in the blanks. You don't have to go as fast as him but the way he did it is the most efficient.
Man did this job in under an hour getting paid probably 4 hrs for it. Everything was torqued to spec with good sequence order. No connectors were hurt in the making of this video! The only bad part was that he is probably the only one on youtube not taking off the intake manifold!
Finally someone who vacuum tests it before putting it all the way together. I hate the way the damn seal is on them so I always put a few dabs of rtv to hold it in when I pull em out the box so it's solid enough to hold when I'm ready to put it in. I typically avoid using the crank to get the belt on and just slip it on before I mate it to the block. Good vid though!
Guys a bit of a hack the way he’s rushing thru the process . I understand flat rate I was a Audi -VW master tech for 27 years and I wouldn’t want this guy ripping thru the process to try to impress the viewers not impressed .
Ya. I would take my car here. Love how the tech just throws the customers car parts on the ground. lol. You might as well just do it yourself after this video. Minus tossing parts on the ground.
Yep ive got to do this soon as i have a leak , i have the tools to do the job , the part is well expensive though, i think the sellers are taking the piss with the price of the whole unit , I have a 2016 polo 1.8 192hp gti tsi BM , DAJA code . The only tool i dont have is that vacume pump to pressure the system or fill it , i guess ill just do it the old fashioned way . Great vid by the way 👍🏼

Hi do you have a video of proceedure to re-sealing the valve cover on this engine or the same engine ? If not can you tell me if i need to drop any coolant to do a valve cover re-seal as there seems to be coolant hoses going over the cover, or can i just un-harness the hoses to give me clearance ? Thanks in advance
I managed to do the valve cover reseal yesterday, so it was the first time doing this on my 1.8 2016 gti tsi polo DAJ , i can say that it was eventful to say the least 😅 i replaced all the oil seals cam side apart from the top timing chain cover main seal . Renewed hpfp oil seal & vacuum pump gasket , all new hardware too , Successful job with no oil or fuel leaks . More to that job than meets the eye . Now ive got everything i need to do my waterpump unit & also need to put a new heater support pump on at the same time 😂 But there is one thing thats bugging me is it easy to flush the cooling system out while the heater support pump & the waterpump unit is off the car + flush out the heater matrix aswel as the radiator ?
Do you guys know what is just underneath the intake manifold actuator rod? I have a leak but I don’t know if it’s fuel or not. It’s that black cylinder thing above where he’s working. I don’t know if coolant or fuel runs into there
Why worry on overtorquing the bolts to the water pump plastic body, yeah, just full tight them with the electric wrench lol. By the way, no need to pay attention on the torque sequence of these bolts, just doit as you want, man...omg
Thanks for the comment. What makes you say that? What cars are you working on and what cars would you like to see on the channel? Are you a full-time mechanic?
I’ve always felt this is a poor design from VW, First, their water pumps fail too easily, and second, an item that will be replaced at least a couple of times in the car’s life shouldn’t me easier to access-not hidden behind so much stuff.
I agree, this is a piece of junk. I own one and currently have this issue. Dealers ask me to pay 2300 dollars to fix. I paid 290 dollars for Diagnostic and brought it back home. I have 5 Toyota and never have this issue. Will never buy VW again.
Mine just failed at 87k miles…7k past the warranty. On the highway my water temp went to 260°. Rough night, gonna be a tougher morning with the cost of the fix. Unbelievable
Holy ship snacks that stinks what city and location are you in. To do this job it’s not that big of a deal I’m pretty sure I have multiple videos at this point with that engine

This is incredibly impressive.
Never understood how some workshops only charge 2-3 hours for a waterpump job.

You need to output the motor in the pump to purge the air out.

take intake manifold off way easier and you can get all parts lined up much better including union from oil cooler to thermostat housing

No it’s not the same. The thermostat is integrated with the pump in the Passat.
