      hi!! its interesting the selection of course you have tres chic eye for Hoyas today i recive my shipping from a grower here in mexico in a state called Guadalajara H. Ban Ngong Ngoy and H. Royal Hawaian Purple actually i have most of my attention about of Ban Ngong cause most of the videos that i saw talk about of the resistence of cold maybe you can give us a lit bit of inforation about. Also i have a question wich tipe of pots do you recomend or you like more hanging ones or regular pots with base? of course tahnks for the magnific video :)

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  4 года назад +2

      Oh, I am very happy to hear that you are receiving them! I never had Hoya sp. Ban Ngong Ngoy. I think it comes from Thailand? I do follow Doug from Vermont Hoyas and as far as he could say, it likes higher humidity. By the looks of it, it may be similar in temperature tolerance like carnosa, but I can't confirm this as I never grew it myself. Hoya pubicalyx are in fact tolerant to cooler temperatures and are easy to grow, so I don't think you will have issues with that one. Depending on Hoya, you can use both hanging pots or pot with a trellis. I find that pubicalyx is easier to maintain on a trellis, but some hoyas like Hoya lacunosa or Hoya serpens (both cool growing hoyas) do best in haning pots.

      ivan montaño How is the plant market in Guadalajara? Have the prices increased like crazy because of the new plant boom? Here in California prices have tripled for some things. I have a lot of family on my husband’s side all live in Cocula. We were supposed to go down and visit in May this year it then the pandemic happened and we couldn’t travel. Royal Hawaii purple is beautiful and now hard to get a hold of here in Orange County.

      ivan montaño thank you! Yes we will be going to Cocula next spring if the pandemic is better. I have lupus so am high risk which is why we are waiting. I also plan on plant shopping my way through the drive down. My husband speaks fluent Spanish and I know enough to go plant shopping I think. Luckily for me his family has been teaching me Spanish and they don’t speak English at home much unless they are teaching me. This also comes with cooking lessons from all the woman. Family days are my favorite days.

    You have created a wonderful channel full of valuable information that is well presented. ~ One adjustment you might consider when showing multiple photos in a video is to leave the plant photos and annotations up on the screen longer while you are discussing each variety. Sitting slightly off center of frame would facilitate this, while keeping yourself in full view. In this way the viewers could be looking at the plants features, leaves, flowers, etc., while you are discussing them. ~ I’m currently researching cool growing hoyas to try growing outside year round in Southern California. Winter temps are 40f / 5c minimum at night with daytime highs around 65f / 17c to 80f / 25c . Summers typically range between 60f / 15c minimums to 95 - 100f maximums with most days being 75f to 90 f.. H. carnosa does fine, as do a few others. I will be growing the Hoyas in bright shade, in a sheltered location that offers some protection from the temperature extremes and excessive winter moisture / rain. I am going to try H. heuschkeliana variegata. If it does poorly I will bring it indoors.

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  4 года назад +1

      What an interesting project! I think many cooler growing hoyas can be accustomed to those temperatures, especially if you provide some protection in the winter or if they are in a covered area closer to the house. Yes, you are right about the position. I didn't think it through well enough. I will make sure to implement your suggestions in the future. Thank you! I hope you still enjoyed it 💚

    They have a lot of these in Australia! I bought a whole bunch of my hoyas for only around $40 at gardenworld
    They had a macgillivrayi and even lauterbachii each for $25 dollars but I ended up getting a full size Odorata for $25, and H. Serpens and another two Odorate for $10 each.
    I really considered Lauterbachii cause I've never seen such large flowers on a hoya before, they look completely artificial

    How hot is it here? 103 F outside in the shade of my top story balcony my thermometer 🌡 so that’s 39. 4 C In Orange County California, in the foothills. Far and away from that beautiful beach weather in the same country. To be honest I have central air conditioning so I’m not suffering at all. Just when I check the mail and the patio plants. My cactus and succulents are totally happy about it along with my ruby ficus Elastica, she’s put out 2 new leaves just this month and two entire new shoots/babies with 6 leaves each in the past 40 days. It was dying inside dropping leaves like crazy but that crazy plant loves it outside in this insane heat.

      Basie Plants just think about how much we will wish for warm spring in January lol it hasn’t been hot here till last week so can’t complain. It’s bad for those that don’t have AC that depend on malls, movie theaters, libraries or even cooling centers here to help keep safe and can’t because of the pandemic. I hope they all keep safe out in the heat. It can actually get deadly for the elderly or at risk people with health conditions.

    Macgillivrayi is one of those names like Gloucester (gloster) where half the letters are silent. It's basically just Ma-gil-vry. Imbricata may be extremely challenging to keep happy. It tends to like extremely high humidity and you basically need to keep it in a terrarium. I happened to get a cutting of it in a group of hoya cuttings being offered as a "set" from a seller, and it wasn't really one I was after. I'm still trying to get it to root after 2 months. I'm also interested in Heuschkeliana and Sigillatis. There are many that I want. I only have about 15 or so at the moment.

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  4 года назад

      Macgillivrayi is definitely a tough one to say! But I agree, imbricata looks like a tough one to keep happy, probably not best suited for a cultivation in a home. I managed to get a sigilatis, it is very beautiful, but shockingly small and thin leaves! I hope I can get a heuschkeliana soon ☺️

    It was 38°C at thr beginning of the week...and it hailing and storming in the evening,. Really weird to have like over 30 degrees and pieces of ice coming from the sky.
    Luckily it's a little colder now...like 25-30 degress.
    Hoya lockii is also on my list, but I'm a bit intimidated by it being thinner leaved...I've got a papaschonii and it just doesn't grow at all when there isn't enough humiditiy as it seems. I'm not sure if I even can give the plant the conditions to make it bloom.

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  4 года назад

      Oh, wow! That is hot! I think we didn't go above 36 degrees. Yes, lockii is a bit different. I think thinner leaved ones will need more moisture. So maybe adjusting the mix might help (and keeping it evenly moist) - I read this for multiflora, but I didn't grew one myself as there is no way a cutting will survive the long trip. If you can get it, I would! Try, and the worst that can happen is that you are not successful. Which is fine, it happens to everyone :)

      Oh yes. The humidity too! It is too much. And when I close the windows I can see the temperature and humidity rising on my thermostat and I start to panic 😂 Which one is your favorite? I hope I will too!

      I can't pronounce the ones you mentioned that I really like. But I like the leaves and veins contrasting and I also like variegated leaves. Do you have variegated violets plants? I'm a sucker for anything variegated. When does your fall season start?

    Hahaha Did you just order a million of Hoya ? I know more about Hoya now than a few months ago. I know i said previously I don’t like hanging. That’s all changed when I bought a big camphorifolia in a hanging pot . It just looks amazing at my balcony doors so now the hanging triffids are coming . It actually solve a fee problem of the limited space I have in my unit hahaha

      Not a million, just 26. I would go for a million, but not enough monehy xD I am glad you changed your mind about hanging plants. I haven't 😂

      @@BasiePlants hahahaI think we can chat on Instagram. I should check it more often. Hahaha 26 is heaps ❤️❤️❤️ u must be super happy. I have spent lots on Hoya. Luckily, I didn’t get anything too expensive. My Australis seems to be budding from old peduncles. I am very excited since I have never seen Hoya flower in real life. Hahaha I know right.
