  • follow along as I make my second Talharpa/tagelharpa or "horse hair harp". this is a recreation of an ancient Norwegian Bowed Lyr.
    I am by no means an instrument maker, but live making things, and Talharpa are very fun to build. hope you enjoy!

    Much better than V1, nice evolution ! If I could give you an advice, change your bridge : use hardwood (maple is the best that's what most bowed instruments' bridges are made of, oak and birch are also good from what I've tested) and make it thinner, say 3mm at the top part, max 8mm for the feet. This way you'll have more volume and the sound would be more defined !

    You could add you playing a little without the woman's voice in the background. I really wanted to listen to the sound of the instrument.
    Quick question. Are you doing this to have the instruments for you? Are people interested in it?
    Thanks

    Looks very cool and it's very beautiful and I love your workflow! I would have done some things a bit differently though. One is that I think that the bridge should be half as thick as the video. Another thing that I would do is to saw the top of the tuning pegs down to the sting hole, this would create this "U" shape which would make it easier to strap any kind of string on it :)
    Speaking of Tuning pegs I would also make the space under the tuning pegs and the playing area a bit closer, or make a top bridge on it, so that yu would be able to play the first half tones as well.
    But, all this being said, I actually learned a couple of things from this video which I will take with me in my next builds, so thank you so much for that :)

    I wonder if it bends because of the tension with time...

    What is it a base bar (3:15)? What is the function of this detail? Why does it have such shape and glued exactly at that place, not on symmetry axis, but aside?

    Very nice!!!
    What's the total width & length in inches? (Nobody shares those specs. I don't know why...)

    Great video, just two questions, what should the scale length be and can I add a nut at the neck as well?

      mine use 33cm (same as a violin) and I've put an oak nut on it but it's not usual.

      Talharpa is another traditional name, just a different spelling pretty much

    All I heard was the same cord over and over again. Don't you get a musical tune out f it? All the same noise with each swipe of the bow realy doesn't sound much like an instrument to me. Can you get an octaves worth of notes out of it on each string so you can play a tune?

    • @RealHunterVR
      @RealHunterVR 8 месяцев назад +1

      I think it’s mainly because he wasn’t pressing any strings to form a chord

    • @waynedavies3185
      @waynedavies3185 8 месяцев назад

      @@RealHunterVR I agree, he wasn't pressing strings but what is the sense of making and having it unless a tune can be played on it? Make up one cord/4 string songs? 4 strings with a possible 4 string different sounds. With 4 strings, one might be able to play a corded like tune in a tuned-up key like tuning strings to C, F, G D. where both the key of C and G could be played.
