Cheers for playing my game Jim! I watched a ton of your early access zombie videos, and the drama ones like digital homicide whilst deving this, good stuff. Almost dissapointed you didn't rip the shit out of my / SND whilst playing this haha but glad you enjoyed it - i dunno what im doing marketing wise, im not a super indie like vlambeer nor am i published by giants like Devolver, so stuff like this really helps me out, thanks again :)
Glove Games Man, your game looks amazing, I rarely buy games because I just like to stick to stuff I know but this looks amazing and I might just buy it. Good work!
Bought the game last night and have been enjoying it. Glad to be able to play it on my simple, non-gaming laptop with a mouse because I am away from home living in a cabin without internet or cell service. The music is excellent and really ties the game together.
This actually looks really promising. It does look very unfinished, with out of place fonts, and the UI doesn't fit the pixel aesthetic, but the gameplay honestly looks very fun.
Awesome, thanks for the feedback :) I hear that a lot about the GUI tbh, maybe ill fix it in future or give the option to customize the gui yourself to what you like
It hurts my soul that this game had no-one playing it, but people actually buy and defend some of the absolute trash that ends up on steam. This isn't exactly perfect but it's leagues better than what Jim normally plays.
Tiger the Lion well there are more popular indie title like table top simulator, we happy few, goat simulator, astroneer; I could on and on, sadly these games take attention away from this game, tbh it's thier own fault for not trying to advertise the game so that it gets more attention.
Yeah, but this game is nothing like any of those games you mentioned. "Indie" is a pretttttty big space - there's enough room for all of them to be successful.
Thanks :) Probably because i suck at marketing, i mainly focus on making the game good with fingers crossed it reaches an audience at some point haha - PRO GAME DEV 101
That plant seed mechanic is actually really well thought out. Sacrifice your limited time for health and risk getting swarmed by enemies while it grows.
Thanks! I've tried to make every mechanic and thing in the game a risk/reward element, so it is not just a simple progression from weak - powerful. The seeds also grow faster in the rain so you have the choice of saving them for a rainy bit if you don't want to waste your time :)
Jim, you are a saint for showcasing fun games people haven't picked up on yet. I wish everyone were like you instead of simply hoping on the next big thing. This game seems to have been made with love and deserves some of that same love back.
yes, he's a genius! Found him making music for free games on gameJolt, he'll be happy to hear this, hes doing the whole soundtrack, currently still trying to figure out a "main theme" for the game. His soundcloud: soundcloud.com/formlessvoyager - Greg (SND dev)
So... relatively sparse commentary in a 20 minute video? That tells a lot about the game, actually. 1) It's genuinely engaging and fun 2) Controls are good, or we would have heard Jim complaining a lot Having the moonphase be the deathtimer is a nice touch.
Not a bad looking game. It's ironic that this is early access and has a lot more content then some "full released" games. It has a nice classic doom vibe to it.
Thanks, tbh i don't like early access but it seems to work well for roguelites where you can easily add a lot of content and tweak things, so i was always aiming the game for that kind of community based thing. Cheers
oh and in dev it was MORE like Doom, but it was kinda hard to draw all the weapons.. 68.media.tumblr.com/6885d49f61efbf0804ec086a36f5c16f/tumblr_njzio00f8e1u9rveno2_r1_500.gif
Asset flippers, are you watching?! This was the zombie shooter game you were all trying to make! Mini map check, enemy and weapon variety check, stable frame rate check, simple yet enjoyable gameplay check, clearly defined map boarders check, soundtrack check. How are so many of you taking something so simple and enjoy and constantly doing it wrong?!!!!!!
This looks like it taken notes from quake or doom and made it into a fun colourful fps, I just love it and goes to show that with better coding and a good game engine can do wonders, this game developer achieved what digital homicide couldn't
Thanks! Quake.. colorful? haha, but yeah i wanted it to look a bit silly like a B-movie or those weird DOS fps games that cloned Doom, i dunno i like weird stuff
Honestly looks like a genuinely decent game. If nothing else a good time waster. The graphics on the pistol look a little *too* 2D, maybe adding a bit of depth to it would look better, but aside from that; good looking game. Has a fair bit of potential.
Thanks :) Honestly, whilst watching a video the shitty gun graphics stand out, but when you are in-game i don't think you notice much because you're too busy looking at everything else, like the enemies/map..etc. Its a 1 man indie game, and its cheap, i dont mind if the graphics look a bit crap as long as its fun. Thanks for the feedback tho, more weapons coming. There are 30+ weapons/items right now.
@Glove Games If at all possible, one potentially significant way to draw people in would be to implement Workshop support (and list it as a prominent feature) for replacing the models/graphics. Some people really love to make content for the games they enjoy.
How to tell whether Jim had a good time with any given game: If the video ends with him saying bye, it's been fun. If the video ends with a sigh or just fades out during a rant, or abruptly ends after something stupid happened, it was probably another asset flip and/or achievement hunter 'game'.
Compared to previous videos on games of this sort, this one does not seem that bad, functioning levels and progression is always a plus :D , nice video Jim
This is what happens when Steam don't care about the games they're selling : everyone stops looking at the New Releases, and good games without an ad budget is hidden between piles of crap.
Now this is my type of game. In the style of a classic FPS, it gives you an incentive to make good decisions while being wary of time management, looks hella fun too. Definitely deserves a lot more attention
This looks like a good doom clone in all honesty. Btw, thanks for all the work you do Jim. Even when your in the hospital i know your willing to rip on something for us.
I was pretty dismissive of this game when the video started, but after five or so minutes I got pretty invested in watching. I doubt I would ever play this game myself, but credit where it's due: it looks like a decent game.
It was particularly enjoyable to watch you play this. It's unusual to see you lose your cool in this way. Loved it! Looks like a good game, loved the music.
Kind of nice to see a game that at the start looked like the usual garbage actually turn out to be decent! Its not my kind of game, I'm just happy its not an asset flip.
So wait... Jim plays a first person shooter on steam (with zombies) and it's got: Music (enjoyable, reasonably fitting music at that). Consistent and unusual enemy design. A variety of weapons with more than just the usual standards. Sound design being suitable and not super weak or ear-rapingly inconsistent. Appears to have a fairly solid foundation in place already and could be built upon and refined rather than being flawed and lazy in everything from conception onward. What the fuck is happening? This looks kinda like what I wanted STRAFE to be in gameplay but really low budget. But not so low that it's another Wolfenstein 3D clone.
Now this is how you do early access. This is a fun game in and of itself, that is already very playable, and will hopefully get even better with time if enough people buy it.
I don't normally notice the thumbnail but I did this time and thought the same. In a twist I actually ended up buying it. Hopefully the dev gets some more love from this so we can see what they're really capable of.
I've heard these sound effects before in Cosmochoria, I don't know whether they are stock sound effects or stolen but for the people who know how to look for that sort of thing should do so
He's the man, the man they call Jim, the man they call Jim Sterling... That's because that's his name, he's the one and only Jim Sterling, other than all the rest...
It's nice to see a decent game every now and then. Unsurprisingly, the ones that are good don't get much attention, thanks to all the Early Access scams in recent years.
I'm actually more interested in the background music. I have to wonder if it was made by the game creators or if they purchased the tracks, because the sound is awesome. It's the kind of music that I would listen to in my car.
This game is five bucks, I'm going to get it. The developer also appears to be pretty active in updating the game which is a good sign. Thanks for the video Jim!
Cheers, yes i am! Just added 4 new blessings and a new structure to the game where killing is manditory and swapping weapons is more often. Update is releasing soon.
Watching this was hard as hell, because I simply could not figure out why you were having so much trouble. The whole time I was just like "play the damn game right" lol
1:54 that rocket sound, correct me if I'm wrong, but that's the same sound as one of the pickup abilities in Twisted Metal 4. Not really against it or anything, my brain just so happen to remember that sound effect xD
for some weird reason this game reminds me of isaac, you are thrown into a level looking for upgrades and fighting a bunch of enemies. there are bonuses and curses, idk, just what it made me think of.
This game would be really shitty if it did not have that map. The map literally makes the game, and I never thought I would say that. Knowing exactly where everything is, including Death makes the game about decision making in a tense environment, and I love that. My only problems with this game which can be fixed due to the early access status is a change of environments, at least visually. (Though having some different hazards would be interesting.) , And maybe some Boss fights every know and then to spice things up every 5 or so stages.
So when you were explaining the Death mechanic, I thought you were gonna say that you need to gain more money for better weapons to actually *beat* Death when he arrives within the time limit. I think that would have been an awesome mechanic.
Well... its functional... that's immediately a gigantic leap when comparing with other usual games... With some balancing and making enemies stop spawning from behind you, it could be really good
surely an experianced gamer such as yourself know's to place a small piece of tape on the screen when there is no reticle. Years of sniping in counter strike in the old days taught me that.
"There are so many monsters and they all want to kill me, a LOT." - Jim Sterling when browsing steam.
Cheers for playing my game Jim! I watched a ton of your early access zombie videos, and the drama ones like digital homicide whilst deving this, good stuff. Glad you're enjoying it, thanks :)
i'm surprised it ISN'T published by devolver, they usually love these kinds of pixel/throwback/selfreferential games
This actually looks really promising. It does look very unfinished, with out of place fonts, and the UI doesn't fit the pixel aesthetic, but the gameplay honestly looks very fun.
Except Steam says otherwise.
lyingpancake95 It's still in early access.
Awesome, thanks for the feedback :) I hear that a lot about the GUI tbh, maybe ill fix it in future or give the option to customize the gui yourself to what you like
Glove Games always good to see indy devs take constructive criticism. good luck to you, i may check this out in the future
+Glove Games You misspelled "My game was shat perfect and inviolable from the forehead of Zeus and I will sue anyone who implies differently."
Still Not Dead: What Digital Homicide tells themselves every day whenever they wake up and cyber stalk Jim.
Sambou Jaiteh HAHAHA
It hurts my soul that this game had no-one playing it, but people actually buy and defend some of the absolute trash that ends up on steam. This isn't exactly perfect but it's leagues better than what Jim normally plays.

Yeah, but this game is nothing like any of those games you mentioned. "Indie" is a pretttttty big space - there's enough room for all of them to be successful.
exactly this is what you'd expect as a average-> minimum level of quality for a indie game
Thanks :) Probably because i suck at marketing, i mainly focus on making the game good with fingers crossed it reaches an audience at some point haha - PRO GAME DEV 101
+Glove Games Tell people it'll make them cry like an anime fan on prom night and it should sell like hotcakes.
It's weird to see Jim enjoying a game... I kind of like it.
Same. Im the dev, and im almost disspointed he didnt shit on the game! Those videos are funny but im also pleased haha
This...actually looks fun.
Glad to hear :)
The game doesn't look that bad, but more importantly the soundtrack is fucking lit.
That plant seed mechanic is actually really well thought out. Sacrifice your limited time for health and risk getting swarmed by enemies while it grows.

Did I just wake up to a bizarro world where Slaughtering Grounds was *competently made and had passion*?
I actually like how this looks. A few more kinds of maps, weapons, and buffs/debuffs and this would be an easy purchase/recommend for me.
All that stuff and a lot more is coming :)
I take it you're Greg Sergeant then. Well, I wish you luck with the game :)
It's nice seeing jim enjoy a game every now and then.
I quite like the music.
yes, he's a genius! Found him making music for free games on gameJolt, he'll be happy to hear this, hes doing the whole soundtrack, currently still trying to figure out a "main theme" for the game.
His soundcloud:

I feel like I've damned him with faint praise now.
So... relatively sparse commentary in a 20 minute video? That tells a lot about the game, actually.

2) Controls are good, or we would have heard Jim complaining a lot
Having the moonphase be the deathtimer is a nice touch.

Might I suggest using System as the UI font? Thought it'd look more consistent with the game's aesthetic.

The look and feel reminds me heavily of those old Doom WADs

Thanks! Quake.. colorful? haha, but yeah i wanted it to look a bit silly like a B-movie or those weird DOS fps games that cloned Doom, i dunno i like weird stuff
Glove Games
Keep it up, cheering for you 👍
I'm getting some Synthwave/Darkwave vibes from this game's music.
I think i'm in love with it.
Honestly looks like a genuinely decent game. If nothing else a good time waster. The graphics on the pistol look a little *too* 2D, maybe adding a bit of depth to it would look better, but aside from that; good looking game. Has a fair bit of potential.
i hate the 2d look of this game, but what bugs me is the gun model is on the right but the bullet comes out the middle >:(
Thanks :) Honestly, whilst watching a video the shitty gun graphics stand out, but when you are in-game i don't think you notice much because you're too busy looking at everything else, like the enemies/map..etc.

Did anyone pay attention to the music? The soundtrack for this game is fantastic
How to tell whether Jim had a good time with any given game:

This is fairly decent. Nice change of pace.
Compared to previous videos on games of this sort, this one does not seem that bad, functioning levels and progression is always a plus :D , nice video Jim

This looks like a good doom clone in all honesty. Btw, thanks for all the work you do Jim. Even when your in the hospital i know your willing to rip on something for us.
This seems almost like someone tried to make an actually good game on the same premise as the slaughtering grounds.
I was pretty dismissive of this game when the video started, but after five or so minutes I got pretty invested in watching. I doubt I would ever play this game myself, but credit where it's due: it looks like a decent game.
The game could probably use some audio cues of where enemies are, so you don't have to constantly spin around to check for enemies.
It's nice seeing Jim actually enjoying a game for like this it's been a while since I've heard him so Happy
It was particularly enjoyable to watch you play this. It's unusual to see you lose your cool in this way. Loved it! Looks like a good game, loved the music.
Reminds me a bit of that zombie shooter game Notch made, but more playable because you actually have a chance.
It might just be me, but I haven't seen you have fun with a game in a while. It was a nice change. Thank you.
I like the how the music tells you when death is on its way.
Kind of nice to see a game that at the start looked like the usual garbage actually turn out to be decent! Its not my kind of game, I'm just happy its not an asset flip.
Nice and catchy Synth Wave soundtrack. I like it.
This looks pretty good but if this makes Jim panic I'll probably get an aneurysm.
I kept subconsciously yelling "BLOOD FEED" every time Jim shot anything.
This has Wolfenstein + Doom + COD Zombies or something.... But im totally getting Doom vibes here
1:28 Good evening, milord. Thank god for you, Jim F-ing Sterling, Son!
So wait... Jim plays a first person shooter on steam (with zombies) and it's got:

Piss Biscuits is my new favourite exclamation ^_^ Thanks Jim.
Sergeant Greg is still not dead- Jim, duty report 2017
From the thumbnail, I was expecting another UnitZ. Was pretty surprised.
The death chases in red are a good idea. But death should be scarier. Make it a building-sized monster that stomps after you, shaking the ground.
Not to shabby. Little more work and this game will be really fun.
oh, 3d space zombie themed nuclear throne type game. seems basic so far, but has potential
Now this is how you do early access. This is a fun game in and of itself, that is already very playable, and will hopefully get even better with time if enough people buy it.
Still Not Dead : What Greenlight style games and developers appear on the store.
when looking at the youtube thumbnail. i thought was another low rate assetflip.
I don't normally notice the thumbnail but I did this time and thought the same. In a twist I actually ended up buying it.
Hopefully the dev gets some more love from this so we can see what they're really capable of.
"Apple hooray!" I think that's the first time i've heard anyone be excited about an apple of any kind.
i love my ipad..... jokes aside, apples are no doubt up there with the top 5 fruits.
This is like a 3d version of the old arcade game Sinistar
I've heard these sound effects before in Cosmochoria, I don't know whether they are stock sound effects or stolen but for the people who know how to look for that sort of thing should do so
Evil Otto in 3D! This is definitely an horror version of Berserk!
The visuals and music were quite snazzy.
It's got a really cool soundtrack!
“My god this is bad, all of this is very bad” well yah ITS A CURSE.
Is it just me or is this actually pretty decent? I mean it has plenty of things going for it. Im totally going to buy this if its reasonably priced
I love when games pump my old school glans.
I'm actually more interested in the background music. I have to wonder if it was made by the game creators or if they purchased the tracks, because the sound is awesome. It's the kind of music that I would listen to in my car.
Formless Voyager does the soundtrack for this:
soundcloud.com/formlessvoyager
Can you hear the enemy footsteps drawing closer? If not, I think that would make the game a lot better.
Looks nice, though.
'Oh hello..... your all horrible....'
We need a t-shirt made of that......
Good to see you enjoying one for a change.
Watching this was hard as hell, because I simply could not figure out why you were having so much trouble. The whole time I was just like "play the damn game right" lol
Holy shit this actually looks really fun.
Jim was never this popular.
The "zombies" look like green, running purple guys.
This game looks fun as hell and the music is amazing, but my GOD. Just WATCHING Jim play it is stressful.
hahaha yes it is! I might be adding optional skulls to make it easier (and definitely adding some to make it harder!!)
With a bit more polish i can see this becoming another binding of isaac/gungeon
Yeah this looks dope, i get a doom+serious sam vibe from this .. always be moving and strafe strafe strafe
Weirdly enough I had been tracking this on steam greenlight, I had no idea it ever released haha
That's one kickass OST.
This reminds me of a nightmare I just had.
Hmmm this game looks really fun. Im gonna try it. It's good work you do by bringing these games some recognition.
This looks like something I'll be picking up.
This definitely looks like it has potential.
1:54 that rocket sound, correct me if I'm wrong, but that's the same sound as one of the pickup abilities in Twisted Metal 4.
Not really against it or anything, my brain just so happen to remember that sound effect xD
Glad you finally got to this
I want a doom aesthetic game with as much love as Brutal Doom.
i actually really like the look of this game. I'm intrigued
for some weird reason this game reminds me of isaac, you are thrown into a level looking for upgrades and fighting a bunch of enemies. there are bonuses and curses, idk, just what it made me think of.
This looks pretty good and would be useful as a time waster
It's actually kinda charming.
This game would be really shitty if it did not have that map. The map literally makes the game, and I never thought I would say that. Knowing exactly where everything is, including Death makes the game about decision making in a tense environment, and I love that.

Still waiting on Jim to cover the Flyland Wars Lol
It's odd to see Jim giving a compliment to a game for receiving a single achievement at a sensible time.
Perfect for Switch and/or Vita.
11 minutes ago. Man I get earlier every video x keep up the good work Jimmy boy!
Waiiit a minete...parts most privet? Rutland tree? Blackadder much?
I like the music.
So when you were explaining the Death mechanic, I thought you were gonna say that you need to gain more money for better weapons to actually *beat* Death when he arrives within the time limit. I think that would have been an awesome mechanic.
this game looks pretty fucking decent!! love te music

nice blackadder reference with the intro there
