They are a mobile game developer and they've made a fun lshooter plus all the options you'd expect on PC (FOV etc) putting many Devs to shame. Great job on their part.
I have only seen Rogue Legacy do that. The skill tree and stuff seem like an exact copy of Rogue Legacy. Are there other games like that? Cause I would be interested.
Duh. I am asking if there are more games that have that type of game mechanic. Which from what i can tell, there are none besides this and rogue legacy. Not every roguelike/lite has this mechanic with persistent upgrades.
@Toastwhispererr, his videos are set to ad free, but the problem is the content he uploads is content id matched so youtube autoly runs ads because of it, so it's not Jim's fault but rather RUclips's choice.
I am shocked at how much I ended up loving this game. LOVE IT. high-speed combat, double jumps, verticality, secrets, character progression, solid weapon variety, boss fights, humor... this game has it ALL. I'd buy a sequel day one. One thing not mentioned here is that the enemies and environmental features completely change from one pyramid to the next, which really helps keep the game from getting stale.
With what i played of this game i enjoyed it. Well worth the money if you are used to Serious Sam type of shooting. Good thing is that there is no best weapon too. Even the rusty revolver got a use.
Don't compare it to serious sam, it had much better gameplay. Yes the design and levels do look nice in this one, but a lot seems to fall flat on its face. Serious sam and other shooters just are... better 1st person shooters. And Ziggurat did that a bit better, also TB already did explain some of that in his video. Also when you see someone that is more used to 1st person shooters compared to Jim. So in some ways I am saying that Jim enjoyed it more because of his skills and art. While people like TB would dislike it or not recommend it on the base of the 1st person shooting aspect of the game or rather how to put it "not good enough gameplay and missing the crazy stuff".
KaiserAfini And here I thought I was only Queen here. Well the Evanescence song of the title is still better that than that *other* "My Immortal". Though I suppose some 'goffics' might be there as mini-bosses.
I'm getting some old-school Serious Sam vibes from the Egypt theme and the colour-changing crosshair... honestly, I'm okay with that. This game looks like it could be serious fun in short bursts with a lot of progress to be made... I rate this 5/5; an actually interesting game that deserves to be sold on Steam.
I know Jim's probably figured this out by now, but this game seems to borrow some of Rogue Legacy's mechanics. It takes all your remaining gold whenever you enter a pyramid, so you're forced to spend as much of it as you can before you try again: it's a pacing feature.
Its Shit feature. Basically you need grind whole game while being underpowered to upgrade hero, and after that you can play the game. Fuck that, waste of time.
Oh look, git gud. Fun. The game is probably balanced around having a nearly filled "skill tree" though, so it's really a waste of time mechanic. Unless there are some cool unlocks in that tree, the whole "boost stat x by y%" shit is really just a timesink and makes you feel inferior in the beginning.
The idea is that it takes more than an hour or two to beat the game. It's not like leveling up is a new mechanic in games, not sure what the issue is here. Instead of having predefined levels though and a rigid leveling mechanic this "changes levels" when you die and you level based on how good you are; you beat the game faster if you're good. Also, there's a lot more to it than boosting stats, 50 some weapons to unlock through gold.
So does Spelunky and Enter The Gungeon but people praised those despite them also taking basically taking all progress away from you when you die, unlike this where at least you can permanently buff your stats once you die.
noooooooob giiiit guuuuuud, i say remove all health from the game like.....spawn with 0 health, instantly die, spawn with zero health, instantly die now that is a challenging game.....
XenoDweeb Except those two games are actually based around you not taking damage. Yeah, what a concept, you can actually "git gud" enough to theoretically take no and practically take very little damage during a whole run.
sure, the first third of the game was pretty drab and shootery but the rest of it was bright, high-contrast egyptian environments and pyramids, and extraordinarily colourful monsters.
The mechanic is whatever gold you don't spend when you respawn is what it will charge you to enter the pyramid. If you don't spend it, you are basically throwing it away.
Some solid game design decisions & mechanics right there. Great art style, awesme UI and polish. I'm impressed. Also, like others pointed out, the pyramid takes all your money :P
It looks like a quality game that the dev actually put money and time into. And very Doom-like in the sense that you have to keep moving, it runs pretty good too. If only Steam had more of this, a quality game I mean.
Looks like a pretty good game! My only critique based on this footage is that the gunplay could be a lot more satisfying, maybe the procedurally generated maps could have more logic to them as well, but other than that I'll definitely be interested in playing this when I next get paid.
the fact that you do find the "diamonds in the rough" in steam greenlight shows us that you are actually looking for something good and not just looking for trash to shit on. thank God for Jim Stirling son
Greetings, Jim. Ludum Dare 38 just finished. I'm not sure if it suits your channel or not, but it might be interesting to make a video about it. Some asset flipper might stumble upon the video and get inspired to actually do some work.
Idk if you ever figured it out, I didn't watch the whole video (but for anyone reading) the price to enter is based off your remaining gold. If you have 5 gold or 500 gold it brings you back down to zero. It's not the first game to do it, but one of the most popular was Rogue Legacy. it's a risk reward thing that forces you to get better and earn more, as skills become more expensive. This game was kinda funny... This kinda looks good, even if it is supposed to be showcased as bad? I can't tell.
This looks really fun! I LOVE LOVE LOVE how well they've done the dynamic music. Will say, in this video anyways, the gun sound effects seem like they need more punch and clarity, other than that I'm looking forward to giving this a try.
Good enemy design. I like it! Thematic, yet varied, and varied not just in terms of visuals but also mechanically. And I dunno, I kinda like the "dusting" death animation. It seems to go with the theme. Maybe if they exploded in a cloud of sand, rather than just disintegrating, it would be more impactful.
This is reminding me of Ziggurat but without the biggest problem of Ziggurat, that being all the enemies that had AOE attacks that lingered for way too long. Which could get so bad that it could cover the entire floor leaving no chance to not take damage.
Also, some of the enemies are ripped from Ziggurat (in behavior not appearance). like the crossbow guys, the frogs, and the biggish ones with the staff/club
I'm getting a Tower of Guns feel, myself, especially since this is more a shooter with proper, traditional guns and other incendiaries and less focused on magic. And the level design has a lot more verticality than you'll typically see in Ziggurat, which is (unsurprisingly!) one of *Tower* of Guns' strongpoints.
Hmm, now that I'm watching the gameplay more and not just the level / gun design, I'm seeing a lot of resemblance to Ziggurat in the enemy design, yeah. That said, nothing wrong with some similarities.
This kind of reminds me of Rogue Gallery in a way, with the skill tree and doing runs to get stronger to complete the levels and paying to get back into the level and the layout of the level changing every time......but this does look fun.
it reminds a little bit of Pain Killer, the fast passed enter room kill all monsters grab loot as you run, rinse repeat. and the odd but amusing enemy designs. 😊
The price for entering the pyramid does not increase. It is always 100% of however much gold you have when you approach the entrance. If you have 5 gold, the cost for entering is 5 gold; if you have 2,411 gold, the price for entering is 2,411 gold; and so on.
I just wish the guns had more oomph to them. It also bugs the hell out of me that the shotgun's spread is two neat rows of pellets above and below of what you're aiming at instead of a centered spray.
Hmm... So after coming fresh off of playing Ziggurat (I've got an ongoing game on level 7 that I started this morning) I can see why everyone is drawing comparisons. And surprise surprise; I've pumped a ton of hours into Ziggurat and already this seems more interesting. It mixes elements of Rogue Legacy, a game I love quite a bit despite it's flaws, and the aforementioned big Z. The level design seems leagues better for starters; there's quite a bit of very welcome verticality instead of getting the vast and boring arenas made for kiting that really lose their charm 5 runs in. Enemies seem alright, nothing new, nothing bad. The one thing that worries me a bit is weapon variety, from what I've seen different classes have different starting weapons and you can find them in-game, but I'm unsure about their quantity and variety yet. To be honest Ziggurat didn't have much variety either (most weapons were variations of pea-shooters, shotguns, seeking projectiles and arcing projectiles). The small details like the reticule showing a rough idea of the enemies health and the skill tree being an actual tree are nice. If you've watched TB's video you'll notice he complains about "anemic gunplay". Without having played Immortal Redneck, I can tell you most of that is a load of bullshit. It's all about visual feedback that really just distracts the player, and in any kind of rogue-like/lite/whatever-the-fuck that's not what you want. All in all it seems like a nice game, worth picking up for anyone who enjoys FPS Rogue-esque games like Wasted and Ziggurat.
Looks VERY similar to Ziggurat. So I have no doubts Jim likes it. However the niche differences between it and Ziggurat makes it unique enough to feel "new".
This is a surprisingly competent and addictive game
They are a mobile game developer and they've made a fun lshooter plus all the options you'd expect on PC (FOV etc) putting many Devs to shame. Great job on their part.
Philomaeus Mystikos Lol I sincerely hope your joking or I'll be disappointed.
Philomaeus Mystikos Meh :P
I'm sure you've realized this by now, but it's charging you ALL your gold to re-enter. Common Rogue-Lite mechanic.
Also, as a Kansas resident, I heartily approve of this game :)
I have only seen Rogue Legacy do that. The skill tree and stuff seem like an exact copy of Rogue Legacy. Are there other games like that? Cause I would be interested.
rogue-lite is not the same as rogue-like
Duh. I am asking if there are more games that have that type of game mechanic. Which from what i can tell, there are none besides this and rogue legacy.
Not every roguelike/lite has this mechanic with persistent upgrades.
Everspace takes your unspent money before you go on a mission.
16:00
jim thinking it's a fixed tax and not just a "take your remaining gold before you enter mechanic"
CLASSIC jimbo
Also not reading the loading screen tip which said it was a remaining gold cost.
Right, its the mechanic from Rogue Legacy. Die, spend money on upgrades, lose the rest.
What's poppin' Jimbo?
I just saw a Kellogg's ad on this vid, the homunculus is on to me
@XzXAionXzX just a heads up I'm gonna be translating Tales of Rebirth and Tales of Destiny remake, if you're interested please stay tuned.
I thought Jim didn't have ads on his videos
nice lie his videos are ad free
I thought only jimquisition was ad free? I get ads on his videos every now and then...
@Toastwhispererr, his videos are set to ad free, but the problem is the content he uploads is content id matched so youtube autoly runs ads because of it, so it's not Jim's fault but rather RUclips's choice.
Glad to see Jim finally figured out it is a percentage of your gold to get in. Specifically, it's 100% of your gold.
Completely agree with everything you said. Hidden gem of the highest quality, 80 hours in on a game I thought I’d leave backlogged forever!
@@NSS420 same here; I had this for like a year before I was bored enough to give it a go. Glad I did.
"I got 2 health! I´m not gonna reach the apex." - not with that mind set you won´t.
Jim Sterling i was worried, not uploaded in a day! seriously though, i love how frequently you upload. Never ceases to entertain me.
This is not right, where's my zombie head spider thing?
Well this game isn't an asset flip..
GuvernorDave I'm pretty sure he was joking
I don't know, I kinda like it.
LazarheaD Ziggurat is just better.
With what i played of this game i enjoyed it. Well worth the money if you are used to Serious Sam type of shooting. Good thing is that there is no best weapon too. Even the rusty revolver got a use.
Heh, it's pretty neat.
I love it because it's stupid running and gunning fun. This game is a great fit for me, but I can understand the other gripes people have with it.
there was an ad before this video for discrete gun holsters and I couldn't think of anything more appropriate honestly
What is that old song ? "I am immortal, I have in me the blood of pogs, I have no rival, no Romine can be my equal, take me to the future of Steam"
First lines spoken by the character were absolutely beautiful. Nice stuff.
What's this? A good game? That's not what I'm here to see, Jim. Unsubscribed.
What's this? Not poundin' it? That's not what I'm here to see, Jim. Unsubscribed.
..... And poundin' it, poundin' it.... poundin' it.
Truly I am a simple man - I see a Jim Sterling video, I hit the like button and enjoy life for a short while.
Until it's back to the dread and misery...
Stephen Barr to real
I know Jim's probably figured this out by now, but this game seems to borrow some of Rogue Legacy's mechanics. It takes all your remaining gold whenever you enter a pyramid, so you're forced to spend as much of it as you can before you try again: it's a pacing feature.

So does Spelunky and Enter The Gungeon but people praised those despite them also taking basically taking all progress away from you when you die, unlike this where at least you can permanently buff your stats once you die.
it is done in the same style as rogue legacy you are supposed to die, alot, spend as much gold as you can on passive upgrades, then re enter
noooooooob giiiit guuuuuud, i say remove all health from the game

now that is a challenging game.....
XenoDweeb Except those two games are actually based around you not taking damage. Yeah, what a concept, you can actually "git gud" enough to theoretically take no and practically take very little damage during a whole run.
yeah all those pots are really wasted when they could be full of random ammo and health drops
When it comes to Egyptian environments i only trust Croteam to deliver.
Imgema Serious Sam is top ten favorite games
Serious Sam 3 was too brown and grey and drab though, I hope Serious Sam 4 goes more the Serious Sam 2 route, at least with color.
sure, the first third of the game was pretty drab and shootery but the rest of it was bright, high-contrast egyptian environments and pyramids, and extraordinarily colourful monsters.
"I'm getting pumped!", he says holding a pump-action shotgun.
Never change, Jim.
I could get into this as an "in-between" game...something I play while I am playing other more involved titles. I dig it!
I'm liking this video just for the reference in the title, Jim Darkness Dementia Raven Sterling
"Oh god there are frogs!" should be your new catchphrase
The mechanic is whatever gold you don't spend when you respawn is what it will charge you to enter the pyramid. If you don't spend it, you are basically throwing it away.
Some solid game design decisions & mechanics right there. Great art style, awesme UI and polish. I'm impressed. Also, like others pointed out, the pyramid takes all your money :P
Jim... you don't need to pay them, you need to sacrifice *all* of your remaining money.
It looks like a quality game that the dev actually put money and time into. And very Doom-like in the sense that you have to keep moving, it runs pretty good too. If only Steam had more of this, a quality game I mean.
if ya havent noticed, its the rogue legacy style of dungeon entering were they take everything you have on you
Looks like a pretty good game! My only critique based on this footage is that the gunplay could be a lot more satisfying, maybe the procedurally generated maps could have more logic to them as well, but other than that I'll definitely be interested in playing this when I next get paid.
Kinda wild to think the studio that made a fun instant buttons app I used in highschool went and made a roguelike.
the fact that you do find the "diamonds in the rough" in steam greenlight shows us that you are actually looking for something good and not just looking for trash to shit on. thank God for Jim Stirling son
Boom Boom Smash Game. Keep up the good work ; ) We really need more of those games! THX
thumps up! stick it in!
Seeing you subconsciously charging in to melee everything for health but backing down at the last second is hilarious.
Just bought the game today. Love it! Always seem to get just a little bit further every time and it gives me a carrot to keep coming back.
Could you tell me more about these amazing 'juicy slots'? They sound quite juicy
this isn't about Jeff Sessions... false advertising!!!
If you assume Sessions is the protagonist and the pyramids are full of non-white people then it fits!
Not sure if he mentions it in the video, but this reminds me a lot of Ziggurat.
Excitable video game playing in a pyramid, what a great video to watch on my birthday. :3
The mechanic in place was told if you paid attention during the loading screen. It takes what gold is left.
Jim. I think you're very pretty and I like ya a lot.
This looks like a mix of Ziggurat and Serious Sam, I wonder if it becomes as difficult as that game.
Greetings, Jim. Ludum Dare 38 just finished. I'm not sure if it suits your channel or not, but it might be interesting to make a video about it. Some asset flipper might stumble upon the video and get inspired to actually do some work.

Thank you for showing me an ACTUALLY GOOD game on steam, went and bought it. Thank you.
Oh, nice, they did the Rogue Legacy style of rogue-like. Now I really want to try this game out.
Why on earth do I still get ads on Jim's channel? I thought he abandoned ads.
This looks really fun! I LOVE LOVE LOVE how well they've done the dynamic music.
Will say, in this video anyways, the gun sound effects seem like they need more punch and clarity, other than that I'm looking forward to giving this a try.
I love that the casino thing is a running gag now.
I somehow got the feeling this game should be bloodier than it is, with enemy pieces flying around.
"SERIOUS?!" - Sam
Honestly this game looks somewhat boring for me, but I did like the enemy designs as well, specially the little frogs
did the little frogs turn gay cos of obama?
they're turning the frogs gay!
all games look boring when you watch others play. it is why it is called interactive entertainment rather then a passive medium such as films or tvs.
It's unfortunately boring even if you play it.
No. The frogs are just hermaphrodites.
The weapons just don't seem _weighty_ enough. Shotgun especially.
You're a one of a kind Jim, love your content 👊🏼
Senior Jim? I need the Purging stone for I fear I go Hollow
this video has a google ad have you broken your promise
Did he not read the first loading screen where it said that the Gods take whatever gold you have left as tribute?
It's doing the Rogue Legacy thing where the Reaper charged you all your money to enter, so your supposed to spend it all on upgrades and shit.
"Oh geez, every time I get into the pyramid the gate keepers ask exactly the amount of gold I have on my person. Wonder what that means..."
Reminds me of tower of guns without the floaty jumping and a upgrade system are the two big differences I can see.
It looks good. Very serious samey. It's actually nice to see some greenlight games being like... real functioning games.
This is reminding me of Ziggurat but without the biggest problem of Ziggurat, that being all the enemies that had AOE attacks that lingered for way too long. Which could get so bad that it could cover the entire floor leaving no chance to not take damage.
This looks super fun! Love the crazy ideas in the game!
I'm diggin the Zelda Tri Force cross hair
this game reminds me of Ziggurat. Another game with kinda the same play style this game has.
I thought the same, the overall design looks exactly like Ziggurat, just with a different style.
Also, some of the enemies are ripped from Ziggurat (in behavior not appearance). like the crossbow guys, the frogs, and the biggish ones with the staff/club
I don't know if Jim mentioned it or not, but I wonder if there are more weapons than the ones seen here?
I'm getting a Tower of Guns feel, myself, especially since this is more a shooter with proper, traditional guns and other incendiaries and less focused on magic. And the level design has a lot more verticality than you'll typically see in Ziggurat, which is (unsurprisingly!) one of *Tower* of Guns' strongpoints.
Hmm, now that I'm watching the gameplay more and not just the level / gun design, I'm seeing a lot of resemblance to Ziggurat in the enemy design, yeah. That said, nothing wrong with some similarities.
I believe the toll in this is like the one in Rogue Legacy where it's meant to set you back to zero when you enter the dungeon
Did they nick that mouse pointer from _Dust: An Elysian Tail_?
main thought early on is it could do with more enemies with less health so it feels more quick paced, it's a bit slow looking at least at the start.
Thanks Jim! Been looking for a new game and this is sooooo up my ally.
This kind of reminds me of Rogue Gallery in a way, with the skill tree and doing runs to get stronger to complete the levels and paying to get back into the level and the layout of the level changing every time......but this does look fun.
is it just me, or is it just the Willrock crosshair with dots switched to triangles? I always liked the enemy health feature there.
From the cartoonish aesthetic and the lack of gore I assumed they were going for a PG wibe, but then he dropped the f-bomb.
it reminds a little bit of Pain Killer, the fast passed enter room kill all monsters grab loot as you run, rinse repeat. and the odd but amusing enemy designs. 😊
If a game was on Greenlight Good Stuff, and then the final product is shit despite to promising greenlight campaign, what would you do?
Wheres immortal blue neck movie boy?
i am loving the shit out of entertained britslang overload jim
Reminiscent of Ziggurat in it's style and gameplay.
The price for entering the pyramid does not increase. It is always 100% of however much gold you have when you approach the entrance.
If you have 5 gold, the cost for entering is 5 gold; if you have 2,411 gold, the price for entering is 2,411 gold; and so on.
If you ever do reach that Apex, will you let us know Jim?
why Is there ad's on this video
You didn't go to the red, shop looking, tent once?
And it looks a lot like that knight game where you have to give ALL your money.
2:42 Are those Dusknoirs?
I just wish the guns had more oomph to them. It also bugs the hell out of me that the shotgun's spread is two neat rows of pellets above and below of what you're aiming at instead of a centered spray.
The cost of entrance to that pyramid is all of the gold you have left.
Think there's some Doom influence, which is never a bad thing!
Matthew O'Neill I thought I was the only one who thought this!
Fucking hell, Jim.
That video title...
Flashbacks.
So many flashbacks.
Exterminatus with a shotgun sounds like a long and arduous process.
Hmm... So after coming fresh off of playing Ziggurat (I've got an ongoing game on level 7 that I started this morning) I can see why everyone is drawing comparisons. Vase smashing simulator 2017
Hey, Jim have you ever played rogue legacy?
Oh gods he left some vases unsmashed! My poor OCD!
JIM, JIM, WERE THOSE THE 'NEW FROGS' WE HEARD ABOUT?!
Serious Sam did the "reticule colour as health" thing before this game.
Currently on sale on PS4 for $5.99 seems like a steal at that price.
Wow! I didn't know ancient Egypt created an automatic pistol and a five shots saw-off-shotgun!
Game reminds me of Ziggurat, and since I love this game I might check this one out
Not sure about the 3D FPS style for a rougelike. Seems a little slow paced and sluggish? Otherwise looks very well made
Looks VERY similar to Ziggurat. So I have no doubts Jim likes it. However the niche differences between it and Ziggurat makes it unique enough to feel "new".
seems like the developers did a good job regarding numerical balance.
Great looking game. Sort of gives me the impression of an Egyptian Quake.
And a very helpful map too.
